Very common issue on high mileage units. When I replaced mine it was without a doubt the hardest rubber seal I have ever replaced. The rubber in the seal was petrified and hard as a brick from the heat and from the fluid.

Did the front output seal leak? I have replaced mine 3 times. 1st was a skf, 2nd a timken 3946. 3rd, I put a speady sleeve on and national 3946 seal. Still leaks but not nearly as bad as it was the first 2 times. Any suggestions?

Is the seal spinning? I hade same issues by an Differential. The Seat from the gasket Was damaged,so the seal starts spinning on the shaft. When you put a sleeve on just the space between shaft und seal gets repaired.

@rporestorations do you know if that would be the same on a passenger side drop transfer case on a 90 k5?

Why didn't you just remove the input seal front plate to gain access to back of seal?
