For one moment, as the Germans advanced through the smoke, you could see an SS soldier strangling an American while another American sees it, then just turns around and books it. Talk about a panicked retreat, although the AI probably just didn't have a script to intervene lol

In modern warfare 2 og and remastered I’ve seen Npcs intervene in animated takedowns. I think just before he runs away he shoots at the guy strangling him but since he’s an Npc he can’t hit shit.

Yeah, the U.S. propaganda machine was strangely silent about the Hurtgen Forest Campaign "victory" in the war. 3 or 4 more of those and the Allies may have had to negotiate rather than face such heavy losses. Even though the Soviets basically did this through every "victory" they had through eastern Europe.

That 55,000 figure is actually deceitful since it includes 1st and 9th Army losses for the entire Siegfried Line campaign from 11 September-15 December 1944. Losses in the Hurtgenwald itself would have been 31,000 including 8,000 non-battle casualties (illness, accidents, and combat exhaustion). German forces, however, lost 12,000 men KIA in the forest alone with another 95,000 captured by US forces in the time period previously mentioned. As ill-advised as the attack in the forest was, it took a bigger chunk out of the German army than the US.
