Every time you smoke a cigarette, toxic gases pass into your lungs, then into your bloodstream where they spread to every organ in your body. A cigarette is made using the tobacco leaf, which contains nicotine and a variety of other compounds. As the tobacco and compounds burn, they release thousands of dangerous chemicals, including over 40 known to cause cancer. Cigarette smoke contains the poisonous gases carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide, as well as trace amounts of cancer-causing radioactive particles. All forms of tobacco are dangerous, including cigars, pipes, and smokeless tobacco, such as chewing tobacco and snuff. Nicotine is an addictive chemical in tobacco. After you inhale tobacco smoke, nicotine flows through the bloodstream to your brain, where it induces a pleasurable feeling. When you repeatedly expose your brain to nicotine, it becomes desensitized, making you crave more and more nicotine just to feel normal. Smoking causes death. People who smoke typically die at an earlier age than nonsmokers. In fact, one of every five deaths in the United States is linked to cigarette smoking. If you smoke, your risk of major health problems increases dramatically, including heart disease, heart attack, stroke, lung cancer, and death from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Smoking causes cardiovascular disease. When nicotine flows through your adrenal glands, it stimulates the release of epinephrine, a hormone that raises your blood pressure. In addition, nicotine and carbon monoxide can damage the lining of the inner walls in your arteries. Fatty deposits, called plaque, can build up at these injury sites and become large enough to narrow the arteries and severely reduced blood flow, resulting in a condition called atherosclerosis. In coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis narrows the arteries that supply the heart, which reduces the supply of oxygen to your heart muscle, increasing your risk for a heart attack. Smoking also raises your risk for blood clots, because it causes platelets in your blood to clump together. Smoking increases your risk for peripheral vascular disease, in which atherosclerotic plaques block the large arteries in your arms and legs. Smoking can also cause an abdominal aortic aneurysm, which is a swelling or weakening of your aorta, where it runs through your abdomen. Smoking damages two main parts of your lungs. Your airways, also called bronchial tubes, and small air sacs called alveoli. With each breath, air travels down your windpipe, called the trachea, and enters your lungs through your bronchial tubes. Air then moves into thousands of tiny alveoli, where oxygen from the air moves into your bloodstream, and the waste product, carbon dioxide, moves out of your bloodstream. Tiny hair like projections, called cilia, line your bronchial tubes and sweet harmful substances out of your lungs. Cigarette smoke irritates the lining of your bronchial tubes, causing them to swell and make mucus. Cigarette smoke also slows the movement of your cilia, causing some of the smoke and mucus to stay in your lungs. While you are sleeping, some of the cilia recover and start pushing more pollutants and mucous out of your lungs. When you wake up, your body attempts to expel this material by coughing repeatedly, a condition known as smoker's cough. Over time, chronic bronchitis develops. Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are collectively called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. COPD is a gradual loss of the ability to breathe for which there is no cure. Cigarette smoke contains at least 40 cancer causing substances, called carcinogens, including cyanide, formaldehyde, benzene, and ammonia. In your body, healthy cells grow, make new cells, then die. Genetic material inside each cell, called DNA, directs this process. If you smoke, toxic chemicals can damage the DNA in your healthy cells. As a result, your damaged cells create new, unhealthy cells, which grow out of control and may spread to other parts of your body. The most common cancer in the world is lung cancer, with over a million new cases diagnosed every year...

@@standforhumanitariancauses4756 These substances can damage brain cells, but that applies to everything you smoke. It is better not to use your lungs as a vacuum cleaner bag. You can never predict the consequences of damage, it remains Russian roulette. Everything you smoke or get drugs into your body is harmful. Many things are addictive and if you know that from others, don't do it yourself. But if you can't resist the temptation, remember, it's always unhealthy. There are also various types of alcohol, of which ethyl alcohol diluted is drinkable, but it also remains a poison and causes damage and nobody knows where that starts. The insidious thing is that you think you can handle it, because nobody is bothered when he is young. After that it is too late and that is usually much later. It's awful to watch someone die of lung cancer from smoking.

COLD TURKEY is the only way to quit smoking permanently...ask any ex-smoker, I was a 2-pack a day ex-smoker... I did take an un-sciantific census of many people who turned out to be ex-smokers and all the "quitters" did cold-turkey like I did... In 1989, I had an emergency that made me ask myself who would take care of my two daughters if i die..i was then a single dad in the military...I decided I'd quit my cigarette addiction that same night...the next day, I quit. Today June 2021 @ 72 i'm still clean... I wonder how many others out there quit Cold-Turkey?

I just recently lost my eldest brother to bone cancer. A couple years ago he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He went through the whole radiation and chemotherapy treatment and finally came through. Then the end of last year he was diagnosed with stage 4 bone cancer. He didn’t have much time to fight it as he just got more and more ill. He was still fairly young at 63,.,,, but I know this whole thing came down to smoking non filtered cigarettes for over 50 years..... He was 10 years older than I, and I remember when I was young watching him cut off the filter and smoke the straight poisonings..... and thinking “that is so DISGUSTING “ I was so proud of him for quitting and trying to get healthy....... RIP Jeff ❤

My grandmother was a chain smoker. Had COPD, lung cancer, but still smoked until the day she died. I can't imagine just how addictive cigarettes must truly be. All I can say is I'll never try it out, every smoker I've ever met has told me to steer clear of it. Speaks volumes.

I smoked for about 15 years and stopped, oh, some 50 plus years ago. My father smoked for 40 years and quit. He died at 93 so had a long life after he stopped smoking. My friend smoked all her life and died of stage 4 lung cancer when she was 82. Some people are more susceptible to cancer than others is my feeling. However, as a stewardess in the Golden Age of Flying, we all started to smoke as we had cigarettes galore on planes, just passing them out after dinner (and taking a bunch home after the flight). How much second hand smoke did we incur - lots. I am 81 now and feel I have a couple more years until something gets me. Stop smoking y'all, life is much better without cigs. Both my father and I used old fashion peppermint candy to help us stop. The taste of peppermint in your mouth stops your desire for cigerattes

When people smoke inside their homes, the nicotine attaches to everything, carpets, walls, clothes , furniture and all gets damaged. My parents said the same. I tried smoking a few times and it always made me feel sick so I stopped. My friends said you get used to it and then it passes. I was like hell nah lol what's the point in that. My first cigarette was a Newport and I smoked it in about 1 minute and got nauseas and laid on a couch for 45 minutes. If you want someone to never start smoking have them smoke a cigarette so fast that they throw up, your body then will develop a negative association with that action and you won't want to do it.

There are plenty of children in my school who smoke, some of them ranging as young as 12 years old. This is extremely saddening. I'm going to ask my headmaster if I may display this video for all the children to see. My father had throat and gum cancer from smoking, but has thankfully survived, however he has lost the ability to taste, smell and breathe through his nose. Please, if you are a smoker, I heavily discourage you from continuing.

I never wanted to smoke but I got peer pressured into it at a party in HS. I was drunk and I was like “F it why not.” I started smoking every time I drank, then it eventually turned to an every day thing. I’m now 20 and I think it’s now to make a change but it’s not as easy as I thought it’d be :/

Same story. Thats how i started too. Initial thought was too occasionally smoke during drink party but end up smoking everyday. You know that feeling when u r all alone and just want to light up a cig and just chill Or hang out with your friends and just wanna have one. That feeling of inhaling and just exhaling those smokes out. But the thing is i started to get chest pain , run out of breath by just walking few steps. There were times where i couldn’t even breathe properly .It’s really hard to quit but i did it and its been almost 2 years since i neva have one. I’m 100% clean !! LET ME GIVE YOU AN ADVICE!! If u wanna quit just do it from today. My plan was to stop smoking everyday and do it only while i’m drunk. IT FAILED. And then planned to smoke only twice a week but it too failed. When i’m having a bad day and i’m just like what the hell and just started to lights up. If you even have a tiny relationship with cigarette, you’ll will eventually come back for more. So, no 2nd thought just quit it even your friends lend you a cigarette just tell them you quit and there’s nothing to embarrassed about. Damn i wrote a paragraph here 😀😀 but i hope u read this . U wont got cancer or any disease now but after many years from now those side affect will started to show. At that time you’ll start a family and will be happy but well thats how those tragedy starts for everyone!!!

I watched about 10 good friends progress this way every time in high school. After about 5 people I noticed the trend and always warned people after how one time leads to two, to three, to full blown smoker. It was very sad :(

Old smokers have their chests full of sputum and they cannot expel it by coughing, because there is a substance such as tar that sticks to the wall of the bronchus and prevents the sputum from rising to the outside... that's really disgusting when I hear an old smoker coughing.

If you really want to quit smoking, you must see it as a crutch that helps you deal with the stress and misery of your life. I quit smoking soon after I quit a really stressful job. I didn't even really think about quitting smoking. It was just something that I outgrew because I realised I didn't need it anymore. All the best!

Most substance abuse is a side effect of misery. If your community has a big drug problem it’s because it is an unhealthy society. Poor Leadership is to blame.

My late grandfather who I never got the honour of meeting because he died too early in his mid 30’s, never smoked in his life, his father however did, excessively. His father developed a type of mouth cancer but after a few surgeries, survived and lived over 70. However, my late grandfather, who’s never smoked developed backbone cancer, and in order to save him, my Mom’s family spent a lot of money to get him treated from a foreign country (France, Paris), he still didn’t survive.. I’ve always wondered why something like that happened.
