all facilities are understaffed. Instead of hospitals blocking off rooms they're just increasing the nurse:patient ratios. The poor working conditions due to the increased demand workload of a single nurse is causing many to consider other career options. At the end of the day its about hospitals making money. They don't care about retention, so it is just a constant revolving door of experience RN's leaving and new grad RN's entering. Unfortunate to see we are just a body to these organizations. Staff pay is ludicrously low for the amount of tasks we have to do. Sometimes you are filling in for the phlebotomist, transporter, house keeping, and tech. If they're going to treat us like we're expendable then we shall do the same. There are many places that need nurses might as well get compensated since it is terrible everywhere. I retired in 2021 after 33 years. I wanted to try to make it to 59.5, but I made it to 55. I burned out several times. Corporate America does not care. It will not get any better. America has no leadership.

The travel agencies are always ripping me off. There is No transparency on my pay. My current assignment they refused to give me my max stipend. I live and own a home in Florida and traveled to California to work. For all I know they are pocketing the money for themselves. My pay looks good on paper but $800 is going to tax due to my lower stipend and higher hourly rate. I had to fight for them to pay for my physical, labs, drug screen and travel money to get here. This hospital is short and dangerous. So yeah I am done.

Been a RN since 2009 and I can tell you the main reason that the nursing shortage is happening is because of hospital greed. Hospitals and there shareholders are only looking at profit and they treat it like a business anymore. They dont care about staffing and they havent for a long time.

I did home health the last few years I worked, it was just as bad. Terrible mismanagement.

I was a Combat Medic in the late 80s in the Army. Went to LPN school in 1990, no RN slots were available. I worked as LPN for years, then went back to school and RN in 99. The pre-internet days were 100% better. Computers and the net made it all into a stress-fueled chaotic field to be in. Things were already bad before the ACA was passed. Patients are now BRGUs-biological revenue-generating units. Profits are all that matters. The corruption and greed are pathetic. I was able to retire in 2021. I don't encourage anyone to go into healthcare, especially nursing. America is not ready for another outbreak and TB is at the border. Hospitals are very dangerous places to work.

hey nomad I want to thank you for getting me through nursing school and being so wise. I want to let you know that I am quitting nursing for good. I have been in this profession for 2 years and hated it since day one. I hate everything about nursing and i feel miserable. I have concluded that the best thing to do is quit and study a different profession. Thank you for everything though.

Micro management. Too many leaders not enough bedside nurses. 29 years at the bedside I am done. I am a travel nurse since 2018. I am burnt out. The staffing is bad and the amount of charting they keep adding on to my job.

Student Nurses need more clinical training. Bring back the time when nurses were trained in the hospital, not the university.

But you need seasoned nurses to train the new nurses, and the seasoned nurses have had it. Huge problem!

Great job covering the real issues of the profession. I completely agree we need to speak up for our profession, and our patients and "do what is right". I am on an assignment where the staff is on mandatory overtime, working 16-hour shifts, I am praying for them. The hospitals are canceling contracts to save $.

So they can lose more nurses by making nursing hours past 12 mandatory. And the canceling of contracts is pure stupidity. I travel also as an ER nurse. The ratios are ridiculous. Pay the nurses what they're worth, they keep the hospital functioning.

I’m going into OR nursing. I graduated from my program in 2020 and worked 4 months on a med surg unit. I quit and didn’t do nursing for almost two years. Finally got a job offer in the OR. Only way I’m going back into nursing is if it’s not bedside. Zero CNAs on my old unit and no secretary. As well as being understaffed RN wise too.

Do office nursing. I work for an APN and PA that are certified in functional/integrative medicine. They were tired of working for hospital system for all reasons we are all aware of. They started their own practice here in Illinois. Its blowing up after 6 years, they are now opening another clinic in Florida. They are able to treat how they want. We prescribe keto and intermittent fasting...we get people OFF as many meds as we can, reverse type 2 diabtets, mostly all thru diet, exercise, and supplements , correcting vitamin deficiencies, autoimmune conditions, balancing hormones, Ive seen lives change here. My point is there are other areas in healthcare you could get into if youre thinking of leaving healthcare. I absolutely love my job, I love being there, my days are no difficult except for the volume we are dealing with because of how fast we are growing thru word of mouth, we are such a small office we cant handle the demand, people are waiting 7 months to get in. I work monday thru friday 8 to 430, excellent perks and a pretty decent pay for a nurse that doesnt have a high acuity job, no bedside care, I get to connect one on one, and coach patients regarding their weight loss. The owners are so accepting and laid back, no hospital politics, etc...if I couldnt work in this type of environment, If I couldnt work where I am now, I would likely no be a nurse anymore and do something different

There are LPN attempting to get in RN bridge programs and schools make it unnecessarily challenging, they say it “competitive” however it seems like it’s all about the money.

it used to be a two semester bridge in many places now they've stretched it into a year and a half of redundant classes and nursing theory, like you said for the money.

I was a nursing professor and I couldn’t afford to work that job. They paid me $38,000 a year even with 2 Masters degrees in health ed and nursing

Bedside nursing isn't worth it. Changed to corrections and I plan on pursuing psych and becoming a PMHNP.

Nursing shortage on might shift is a nightmare. Have to finish charting on my lunch breaks and i usually stay an hour after my shift ends to finish charting

I’m an insomniac, workaholic, New Yorker and want to be a Trauma Certified ICU Traveling ER Nurse (FNP-ENP/MSN) and I want to do as many college-hacking and college online as I can to get me there. The plan is, with me only needing 3-4 hours sleep, I would work any shift mainly in North California hospitals out of my Suburban vehicle and hit the local gym & Walmart for all of my other needs to exist. lol And I’m reaching for MSN as opposed to ASN or BSN so that I’m most-favored and marketable. 2. What are your thoughts? 3. I will work any shift at any location , so what specialty pays the most? 4. Can I do 11 months on a contract, 2 months home, then another 11 months on a contract a the same hospital without loosing all of my wonderful traveling benefits? Ex.: I consider December and January my “vacation” months, then come back to work. 5. Can you work multiple contracts if the commute works for you? 6. Since my home state is New York City, in your experienced opinion, what is the possibility of my get a traditional 13 month contract in New York City? 7. You are right about the faculty shortage. We have 4th semester students still not able to complete their hours from last semester because of lack of faculty. It was like luck of the draw on who you got placed with and not getting it cancelled. They have to do extra work this semester by no fault of their own :/ it's bad. I was able to get my hours in thankfully. *Got a job offer this morning for the ED- starting in July!

Hi cheyenne, How's your experience working in ED? Care for some updates? I remembered when I first got a job in ED where I need to do the iv cannulation and taking blood. It was very stressful for me since we do not learn any if these in nursing school and yet we expected to do these tasks.

Nursing is MUCH harder than teaching. I love people and became a nurse to help people. You won't realize how brutal nursing is until you're in it; good luck.
