I almost died from anorexia back in 2005 and the book "Intuitive Eating" saved my life. Our dietician in the treatment facility was a big believer in that concept and it literally changed my entire relationship with food. I have been in recovery for almost 13 years. I sing its praises from the rooftops and encourage my friends and family to do the same!

Gained 65 lbs with my pregnancy! Totally agree I would never do it again...it wasn't all me, I had complications where I couldn't work out but I could have eaten better! My son is 14 months and I have lost 43 but have the other 20ish to go! It is soooo much harder to lose than I thought! Obviously having a child takes up a lot of to e I had before...when I thought about losing weightbefore I had the baby in kind of forgot about the fact I would have a lot less time to workout, meal prep etc....So long story short...listen to Becca!!!

Great power comes from excercise throughout the struggles of pregnancies. When I was pregnant I eat a whole lot not the best diet but I eat and eat then starved then eat then did a gymnastics move then eat and took prescription vitamins day and night

Absolutely I over ate during my first which I totally regret and have since changed my lifestyle and food choices. I gained 50 lbs for my first although I did seem to quickly loose it after but still I wasn’t proud. My second, I knew more, was more educated, and had been maintaining a healthy lifestyle for years and gained 22 lbs. Great info! Love your videos!

As far as the weight gain, you don’t have to gain a single pound during pregnancy. I get your point may be to help others not to stress about it if they do gain weight and to encourage others not to gain excess weight, but due to my weight at the time, my doctor wanted for me not to gain any weight. She didn’t suggest that I loose any but she definitely encouraged me not to gain and I didn’t. I did not gain one pound in 9 months. Nothing changed with my diet or exercise except an increase in my water intake.

If you are already obese you don’t gain much and aren’t encouraged to. If you were of normal or under weight; weight gain is imminent and necessary because the woman doesn’t have stores readily available.

When I concieved my son I was already overweight but I didn't feel too bad about my body as I could still fit into trendy clothes and didn't look awful. Over the course of pregnancy I gained roughly 40lbs and when I gave birth 14lbs immediately came off but in the days and weeks that followed nothing else did because the remainder was body fat. I gained it where it always goes, my face, boobs, back, arms and stomach. I looked like an inflated candy apple. I went from a European size 44 or 46 to a size 48. Where I live all the trendy clothes shops stop at an XL which is what I fit into when I'm not pregnant. I went shopping in New Yorker for some outfits and nothing fitted me. I resigned myself to men's Nike shirts and black leggings until the weight came off and I counted 2,000 calories a day. The weight came off in about 2 months (I was also breastfeeding). I am still breastfeeding my 20 month old and have just found out I'm pregnant again. This time I'm counting calories and don't eat more than 2,300 a day. I try and stick to 2,000 and I have cut out energy drinks and candy which I consumed all throughout my last pregnancy. I'm a big eater and generally eat more than my husband when I'm not paying attention to my diet. I'll probably lose weight but at least I won't gain any.

Thanks for the information and I totally agree with you. Just hit the second trimester a few weeks ago now... Man time flies and I finally have some control again in what I eat! What do you recommend to stop candy cravings? I'm so aware of candy and it's uselessness in a diet but I eat like four now and laters daily. Cannot help myself! Recently the craving has improved and I can usually go for fruits instead. Specifically oranges with salt... Crazy cravings lol. The salt part makes me paranoid too! I'm overweight so ideally I would gain the minimum amount of weight possible. So far so good and I don't deprive myself. I decided about a year ago that I would never do another deprivation diet again. I've lost some weight, about 12 pounds prior to pregnancy just from eating the healthiest of what is available to me and trying to make better choices. One day at a time I guess. Congratulations on getting through morning sickness! I still can't eat chicken to save my life lol.

I have heard mixed opinions on weight loss during pregnancy. If you are overweight/obese, is it ok to lose weight while pregnant? I ask because I have been eating healthier and walking - not anything strict at all, and I am naturally losing weight. I eat when I am hungry - I am just making better choices. If I continue this, and lose weight while pregnant, is that ok?

Hi, I am a little worried. I started my pregnancy at 142, I am currently 18 weeks and I am 161. I don't know what I am doing wrong, I sometimes eat "bad" like potatoes chips or a slice of pizza but is not all the time and my sister and my doctor are saying I have gained to much and I think that stress is making me gain more. I just don't know what to do. I am having twins by the way
@jennileemills72545 жыл бұрын
You’re four weeks ahead of me! Have you written down a day of eating to assess what’s nutrient dense and useful versus what could be reconsidered? Twins will see you gain more weight than a standard pregnancy, so don’t be too hard on yourself but also be mindful of your doctor’s advice (not the advice of friends and family, they’re not health professionals). Unless you have an underlying health issue, reviewing your food and doing light exercise within your capacity will help you have a healthy pregnancy. Try not to stress x

Hi! I am also a registered dietitian and that has been proven false. The bio availability of calcium from dairy products is quite good! However, as Becca has touched on you do not need to consume to dairy to get your daily calcium :) Way to stay curious! :)

@@XoMoMoXXo Thanks for letting me know! I'm still wondering about all the studies which show correlation between the amount of dairy consumed in countries and the quality of the residents' bones (as in more dairy=weaker bones). Will it be possible for you to suggest a good article or source for me to read more about your claim? Thanks again
@XoMoMoXXo6 жыл бұрын
No problem! So there are a variety of factors that may influence the results of scientific studies. One is that the scientist is not using humans but is rather using animal specimens, which always skews results. If the researcher is using humans, we have to be aware of what kind of population he/she is using. For example, Asian cultures barely eat dairy at all- are these the populations being tested? Those kind of variables greatly effect the outcome. Also, we have to look at the age of the population. When we reach our mid 20's we reach our maximum bone density, after that, our bones begin breaking down faster than we can rebuild. With that being said, a person in their 70's may consume a great deal of calcium on a daily basis but may not be utilizing it to the fullest potential- this can be due to malabsorption if the individual has an unhealthy or diseased GI OR it can be because they are simply breaking down much faster than they are building up. (Therefore, they are absorbing the calcium but they are not utilizing it at the appropriate rate due to increased break down). Theres also research supporting the increased absorption of calcium when calcium is consumed in conjunction with other vitamins and minerals. So there are absolutely are studies out there investigating the idea, but because of the countless variables, none can be proven. We do, however, have substantial evidence that calcium is absorbed and utilized in the body a great deal- and that is why we continue with that recommendation- so until there is solid evidence that another method exists, health care professionals cannot change the recommendation. I tried to find supporting articles for you, but you'd have to pay for their access. I've attached a very simple article- not a study- from Harvard Public Health. If you still find yourself curious, you can find some free access articles on google scholar. Thanks for asking and being so curious! You're awesome! www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/calcium-and-milk/calcium-full-story/

I was always under the impression that gestational diabetes was a hormonal thing and how you eat during pregnancy can’t really prevent it (just like eating sugary food won’t cause type 1 or 2 diabetes).
@RosesareRed386 жыл бұрын
Brynne C food controls your hormones too. It's a combination of things but keeping diet in check does help. I don't see healthy slim people becoming type 2 diabetics? And if the slim people do it's the ones that eat loads of junk, don't exercise despite being slim.
@jensee33176 жыл бұрын
I had GD with my first but I was 30lbs heavier from the start. Weight has a lot to do with hormones. As well as diet. So does exercise, I didn’t work out with my first but started walking when I found out I had GD. It made a huge difference in my blood sugar levels. This time I’ve been working out 5-6 days a week doing low impact HIIT and weight training ( at lower weights of course). In two weeks the doctors will order the glucose test and I really hope I can prove diet and exercise is enough to keep pregnancy hormones in check.

I’m not bringing this up to be argumentative but out of pure curiosity. You mention the health ramifications of excess weight gain in pregnancy and explain why you do not subscribe to unhealthy eating habits and over eating etc. However, that does not seem to be what you discuss outside of pregnancy. You don’t mention the health consequences of excess weight and seem to subscribe somewhere along the lines of HAES. What’s the difference? I realize the problems that can occur with pregnancy in itself but you go beyond that in your reasoning for gaining too much weight. Don’t get me wrong I agree with you but I also agree that we need to be real about the ramifications of excess weight regardless of pregnancy too (In a supportive manner that maybe wasn’t present in the past).
@liveloveloud1006 жыл бұрын
Joy Cooper I think she may have briefly touched in this or maybe mentioned in passing but if I’m not mistaken she mentioned that a healthy weight will look different on every body. So she promotes eating a variety of nutrient dense foods limiting highly processed foods and listening to your body/intuitive eating. When one does this and includes physical activity (which she promoted and does her self) you body will find the weight that it thrives in. I feel she doesn’t stress weight before there isn’t really a weight range that she can recommend. What is excessive for one person will be the sweet spot for another. (Not words from Becca directly but I’ve watched for a few years and this is what I’ve gathered from her nutrition videos)

This made me think of that recent episode of the Kardashians where Khloe is pregnant and she’s trying to eat healthy because her dr doesn’t want her to gain more than 30 pounds I think it was because her baby was already fairly big and and they were worried the baby would get too big for her to be able to deliver vaginally. Well Kris showed up at Khloe’s with 4 dozen of Krispy Kreme donuts and Khloe didn’t want them and she left them there for her anyways. She knew she was trying to eat healthy but she kept making her super heavy high calorie foods because she thinks you should sit on the couch and stuff your face all day. She wanted Khloe to gain 75 pounds! She didn’t think Khloe should be working out either. Lol I’m sure a lot of this was just made up for the show but it was pretty funny!

haha I watched this one too. So funny. I actually thought it was a bit concerning how much of a focus her doc was putting on her not gaining weight though!! I think like you said probably a lot of it is made up or exaggerated for the show.

Lindsay Pleskot yeah I think somewhere in the middle is probably the best! I agree with Kris that Khloe should indulge now and then but Kris was taking it too far! Haha

I agree with the REAL food thing. I think all women are different. The weight guidelines don’t really apply. Your body is in control while pregnant, not you. If your body wants to gain 60+ lbs to have a baby survive and flourish it will even if you eat “perfectly”. I just think women need to trust our bodies, cravings and just let the body do what it needs to do in a Whole Foods way.

I don't think there is a prevention for gestational diabetes. Obviously, keeping a steady blood sugar is important for all the other reasons you mention as well as management of GD.

Pretty sure gestational diabetes has nothing to do with diet it's luck of the draw from the placenta .. obviously sugar levels are important anyways but I think it's important to note gestational diabetes isn't a woman's fault from diet :)
