I was able to greatly improve my diabetes by drinking lots of water. I realised my diabetes became a thing after I went on low carb diets. Turns out they severely dehydrate you as there are no carbs to retain water. So I figured if I eat salt, carbs and drink a lot of water I will improve. Turns out I was right.

@mainadonaldson4 жыл бұрын
In my ventures into genealogy, and the old diocese death books back into the 19th century I found that many people died of what in German was termed "Wassersucht" (water retention), a tell-tale sign of heart failure. So, the reason for lower heart disease rates in olden times is probably also misdiagnosis.

I was discussing this with some staunch meat eaters, it was actually from another video where Greger starts the video with the story about his grandmother. One of the guys used to work with terminally ill and aging patients as a nurse and was absolutely adamant that there'd be no way someone could go from having such a serious health condition and being wheelchair bound to walking 10 miles a day, in only 3 weeks. I wouldn't like to see any exaggerations as I know the facts and figures are so strong to advocate for a diet void of animal products anyway and when there is exaggeration, then all other facts can easily lose credibility to the audience. Is there any actual documentation of this rapid recovery anywhere, or may it have been slightly fabricated for the wow affect? Would be awesome if it was true!
@michaelham23662 жыл бұрын
I've thought about this, and it occurred to me that one possibility is that the wheelchair use might not have been so serious as it sometimes is. For example, Ms. Greger may well have had a heart condition and also tired easily because being out of shape, and she was in the wheelchair on the orders of a well-meaning physician rather than any serious need. Once she got good nutrition and regular exercise, she might then have quickly regained strength. But you're right, it is a curious detail.

I am a big fan of the CHIP program, and have done it twice, and will begin another round on August 13! I love Dr. Diehl too! He is just so wonderful. The program works! The sessions are scheduled to accommodate people who work during the day as well. It teaches how to prepare the foods, how to shop with a local grocery store guided tour. The cost of the program includes a light meal at each session, the beginning and ending blood work and evaluation, plus a lot of camaraderie and exchanging of successes and encouragements and even a little fun competition among the groups. The alumni meetings during the months after help you to maintain your health by continuing to offer encouragement and fellowship, as well as a nice potluck dinner to share your new food preparation skills! Our meetings will be on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings at 6 pm for 4 weeks in our town. Learning how to follow the Optimal Diet, a plant-based whole foods plan is made easy with this program!

Philip J Fry I ate oats for breakfast, beans for lunch, and pasta made from lentils for dinner yesterday. According to cronometer.com I had a slight surplus in calories and maxed out every nutrient you can think of, including all essential amino acids. Zero cholesterol, low fats, high carbs. I don't go out of my way to avoid wheat, corn, or soy but I certainly don't live on them either. Your mindset is super flawed dude. You're used to Beef, Pork, Poultry, or Fish... but the variety in the vegetable kingdom is far beyond what you're used to with chicken nuggets and bologna as your go-tos. You certainly don't understand what GMOs are and get your infornation from fear-mongerers that thrive on scaring you and making you feel helpless for ad revenue. Also... The flesh that's stripped from the carcasses and preserved with chemicals so it doesn't completely rot before you start chewing on it... Comes from herbivores that are fed the exact things you're so concerned about. But with plenty of destructive hormones and antibiotics to go with them.

Love this video as it touches on points I care about. Testing the optimal diet in the community where they already love and teaching people to maintain that way of living after the course is done. I live in public housing but am fortunate to live down the street from two community gardens and a wonderful farmers market. It has taken almost a year to figure out how to incorporate more veggies in my diet. I have only recently eliminated eggs and dairy. Seriously considering only adding back fish and chicken I farm myself only when I get my own home. I started a balcony garden and wish I had a program to help me before my thyroid issues and excess weight issue occurred. Chip sounds like thrive or pure plant project which I thought were wonderful, but can't come close to affording.

As a behavioral health professional I am biased but after all the research i have read from the good doctor I keep coming back to the essential problem is a behavioral health one not a physical health one. Just like smoking, it is not a lack of knowledge about the dangers of a unhealthy diet that is the issue but a lack of psychological insight that prevents people from making the changes to their behaviors. you dont need to see a doctor or nurse you need to see a therapist. but like i said i am biased.
@Cin99996 жыл бұрын
William Holt „behavioral health professional“ thats some mental gymnastics god damn How about being an adult and controlling what goes into your mouth. Next thing kids dont need parents they need therapy only and you dont need to get your ass to work you need therapy because you dont always want to get up in the morning...fukn 2018

so your big solution to hundreds of thousands of people dying every year due to their diet is be an "adult"!??? yeah no kidding 2018.... people just keep getting dumber.
@Cin99996 жыл бұрын
William Holt Same goes for car accidents that arent always just random but preventable, deaths from illegal drugs, alcohol, cigarettes - in no psychology institute ever the guidelines for risky behavior say that it isnt at all in the hand of the people doing it but that they „just need therapy“ Some shit is hard in life but its still your fault It is not „my solution“ thats reality... As far as diet goes - the misinformation spread by media and industry just alienated the public from the actual scientific consensus - people dont know whats healthy so they dont eat healthy. „My solution“ would be to educate and maybe vote so that the industry has to pull their dirty fingers out of your USDA guidelines.
@frothin1236 жыл бұрын
i agree that miss information is a problem. i also agree that personal accountability is essential. my point is that seeing more doctors or nurses who tell you to eat healthy is not the solution. everyone knows that eating too much makes you fat and unhealthy. behavior change is hard and sometime people need the help and support of professionals.

I think something that needs to be addressed is the idea that humans became big brained and intelligent through cooking meat and eating it. This suggestion by researchers drives me nuts, as if the anthropologists suddenly forget how evolution really works. There are points never raised that debunk the cooking made humans claim. Humans already had the wherewithal to develop cooking before cooking could give them the brain type to come up with the idea to cook in the first place. Humans were already developing the creative brain long before they started that. Humans develop the creative intellect through intention. That is how it started, and how it continues. Early humans went, 'hey, that thing over there is neat. I can use that. But I can also think of something better'. What makes us human is nothing more than the intent to better ourselves. In other words, let us remember how evolution works: When a species mutates, if that mutation gives the species good survival, that mutation becomes a specialty, and the specialty is developed through its practice. It is true of all species' specializations. This is how it works.

That "put it to the test" statement needs a re-tread. It is boring, trite and usually not true. In this case the data sounds very good. The problem is that the food industry has been ripping at this problem from the other side and they know well, maybe going back hundreds or years as to how to adulterate the food of the masses. What it is going to take to stop and reverse this problem is an almost authoritarian regimentation of people so they can avoid the brainwashing of the food industries back when they are tiny babies and all as they grow up. How is that ever going to happen, and so as it does not happen, the food industry gets stronger and stronger and hooked in more with other industries, pharma, petro-chemicals, health-care, and mostly advertising ... lying ... they just lie to tell us what to eat and if our paents are victimes of the system so shall we be.

"The first Rockford study,13 initiated as a pilot, involved 242 participants. The observed biometric improvements were similar to those reported by Diehl6 (see Table 1). This study also documented the nutritional profile typical of participants during the CHIP intervention, which was necessary as the program did not prescribe a dietary dogma but instead encouraged participants to move along the spectrum toward the ad libitum consumption of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes. Three-day food logs indicated that the participants dramatically reduced their total calories from fat from 39% to 20%, and cholesterol intake decreased on average by 77% (see Table 2). Carbohydrate consumption increased from 46% to 64%, primarily from unrefined sources, which also corresponded to a significant increase of 19 g (160%) in fiber consumption. Although the volume of food was not restricted, the increased emphasis on foods of high nutritional value but low energy density resulted in a significant decreased calorie intake of approximately 800 to 1000 kcal/day. These results indicated that participants were achieving the nutritional goals set by the program." www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6124862/

According to Harvard School of Public Health the "Optimal Diet" contains also fish and poultry. In their article "Becoming a vegetarian" they point out that "A purely vegetarian diet is not necessarily better than a plant-based diet that also includes fish or poultry. For example, in a pooled analysis of data from the Oxford Vegetarian Study and EPIC-Oxford, fish-eaters had a lower risk of certain cancers than vegetarians".
@Cin99996 жыл бұрын
Oren z You interpret what they are saying wrong and you need to google what „based (on)“ means Its a wfpBASED diet Also if you actually read the research Harvard is basing this on it shows how the less animal products the better people do but some idiots cant seem to take their b12/ manage their diet So this recommendation is based on a diet for the wide public, so that they dont have to include supplements etc. And again in the quote you have they arent actually saying what you seem to get from it

I've never been one for community activism. I mean, we have unlimited information on dieting and exercise out there. I got overweight and my legs started swelling, so I stopped eating fried potatoes and eggs for breakfast, had a bowl of oatmeal and took a half hour walk. After a couple months it stopped and I lost some weight. I have tried a couple diets and listen to nutritionfacts and arranged my own diet which is inexpensive and healthy. I guess it's a good idea, but it's not for me. We're moving to healthier eating. It just takes a long time to move an entire population.

There's tonnes of bullshit online. This guy is a pro. Never mind 'plant based' diet, I'm on the 'data based' diet lol.

more cherry picking stats possibly. people die from CAD when they live longer than they did in year 1900. Rich people live longer than poor. etc. Gregor is on right track, however, since he titled this Optimal Diet even though he left the topic at the title.

Dear Dr Greger - Not sure if this is the best of your excellent videos for my comments but as a 1 year Vegan and advocate I was very concerned over YT videos from Daphne Reloaded who after 10 years as a vegan now makes claims about the dangers from most vegan foods - culminating in a recommendation to eat meats, eggs and dairy. This could be believed by many coming from a recent "ex vegan". The second comment is regarding Dr Darren Schmidt. who attended a lecture by you and Dr. McDougall and explained how you both misunderstand the Keto process in preventing lactic acidosis ("Veganism vs. Ketosis and meat eating. Drs. Greger and McDougall."). He also recommends raw and cooked meats. Hope for your usual science/study based refutations of their main arguments. Chris S.

I've never been vegan, but Daphne is right about those nightshade plants - they cause problems.

The majority of my diet is plants but if I don't eat meat I get sick.
@Cin99996 жыл бұрын
Al Cameron No you dont. There is nothing essential in meat that you cant get somewhere else. 100% when you skip meat you just make the 3 typical mistakes 1. eat too little calories 2. dont get your b12 pills 3. nocebo yourself

Yes Cin, I do.

Cin, Vegetarian and vegan diets may be very healthy for some people. However, there are a few important nutrients that are impossible to get from commonly consumed plant foods. Taurine, Heme-iron, Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA), Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3), Carnosine, Creatine, Vitamin B12. I don't like taking pills. It companies like Memphis Meats become successful I may consider buying their products. I don't like to see animals suffer for me to live. www.memphismeats.com/
@Cin99996 жыл бұрын
Al Cameron Have even googled these? Taurine isnt essential Heme iron is a carcinogen, you need dietary iron that you get from plants for example beans, if you want to absorb all of it eat it with a vitamin C source but really it doesnt matter DHA/omega 3 is in plants AND we can convert it from other plant omega fatty acids Creatine isnt essential we produce it ... like come on dude google at least B12 is made by bacteria ans is everywhere in nature ...if you dont want to drink river water its the only thing you might supplement but there are also fortified foods (btw 34% of meat eaters are deficient) Plus this is the same for all of us, we are all human, its not like some are born vegans

Cin, I'm glad your vegan diet works for you, unfortunately it doesn't for me. I still love a lot of the Nutrition tips dr. Greger provides.

You didn't answer the question....... Clickbait title.

It did answer. Whole food plant based. (Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes, as much as you want without portion control or counting calories).

Optimal diet? Nutrient density, bioavailability and complete balanced nutrient spectrum. Definitely not a vegan diet.
