I am a huge Maria Sanchez fan -great interview! Her story is so important to tell. My sister sat next to her on a plane and said she was super cool and genuine. Note: I was at the Portland / Gotham quarterfinal game on Sunday and I completely disagree that Gotham isn't dynamic to watch. What is this? East Coast/West Coast beef? It is kinda insulting to all the amazing players on our team who work hard. We have a deep roster and so many of our players have been away from the rest for weeks at a time due to National Team duty, yet we are still in the playoffs. Go Bats!

This means that while team cohesion and chemistry is negatively impacted by players availability the team manages to do well. Heath criticized the team for not playing up to their expected level given all the stars on the team. Molly's explanation is while GothamFC has many stars, the stars are not available to practice or play with the team as often as other teams because the stars are called away for national duties.

Simpler example, complaint: I don't see you enough. you're ignoring me. counter: we live on opposite sides of the world. Is the criticism of not seeing each other enough valide if people live on opposite sides of the world?

I mean, it seems pretty obvious that she doesn't want to - or is not able to - talk about what happened at Houston. It's so attached to her as an NWSL player that nobody would ever do an interview with her and not ask, so the only logical conclusion is that it was vetoed as a topic prior to the chat. Players can rarely talk candidly about contractual matters and events at club - its unfortunate as we're all missing out on what is no doubt some great gossip.

Don't mind Champion's League coverage, but dear God no more Arsenal. Practically every podcast in the UK is dominated by Arsenal. Just search on KZbin and there is so much content to choose from. There are plenty of other teams doing well in the UWCL, which you don't mention, but they get only a fraction of the time and attention. It's a welcome break to have a show predominantly centred around football outside of the UWCL and the European leagues.

Pretty sure you're a troll based on your other comments, but for anyone genuinely wondering about the breakdown, FBRef says 234 out of 372 players (~63%) in the NWSL in 2024 are Americans. Some of the players counted as other nationalities are also Americans who don't play for the US like María Sánchez.

Maria is a U.S. citizen, I think. I wonder how she identifies.

She was born in Idaho, so apart from the very unlikely event that she's officially renounced US citizenship, she is a US citizen. She's also a Mexican citizen through her parents. I think it makes sense she can be both and play for either nation. Organizations like FIFA and the IOC have rules on how players qualify for and switch national teams so that they can't just play for one nation one week and a different one the next. I do think that holding multiple citizenship is a kind of privilege that's been less discussed to date though. Given the ease of international air travel nowadays, I also think it would be wise for the US to reconsider granting automatic citizenship to any baby born in the US and to restrict that to babies born to US citizens and permanent residents (green cards) the way that the UK and other European countries do it. That wouldn't affect people who already acquired US citizenship that way in the past though.

Yikes at Tobin's take on Gotham. A bit disrespectful and uninformed, really bummed to hear such a shallow take from her. Gotham plays beautiful, inspiring football and the work rate of Sheehan, Martin, Ryan, Stevens, and Sonnett has been insane, and they have actual TEAM goals. They dealt with so many injuries, more games than most of the other teams with the different tournaments, and still made it to the playoffs and look strong. I love their brand of football. Tobin should reevaluate her views here.
