NYC Subway: Elevated Trains at 125th Street

This film shows the 125th Street Station on the IRT Seventh Avenue-Broadway Line.
This station is special in that it is located above Manhattan Valley, which is bridged by a beautiful steel structure between 122nd and 135th streets. The viaduct was built in order to keep the trains level, while the street descends into the valley.
The film shows the viaduct and several (1) trains running through the station.
Also, because of construction, all uptown (1) trains ran express between 96th and 137th Streets.

As a visitor, this station was a must-see when I came to NYC to ride the subways. Its crazy high above the streets there at the station! By the way, you can walk to the south tunnel portal and get good photos through the fence from above the top of the tunnel portal. A really neat view.

click789101112 the highest elevated platform is the smith 9th st station that is used by the F/G trains. Hoped you checked that out as well

Most IRT trains are ten cars, except the 7 line, which runs eleven car trains. And the 42nd Street Shuttle- a mere four.

Yet another SUPERB video, THANKS for the fond memories. I grew up in that massive housing complex north of the 125th St. station on the right. From 8 years old, I used that station to ride the #1 train even though the 137th St. station was closer (I lived on 133rd. St.), but I LOVED the 125th St. station and vividly remember climbing those stairs years before the NYCTA had those escalators installed. On Sunday mornings I could actually faintly hear the carillon ringing from Riverside Church. GREAT video, thanks so much for posting!

Imagine that NYC subway brings back the 9 train service for use on the skip stop, bringing back skip stop service to the Seventh Avenue-Broadway Line, and add the 13 train service, running via the 1 Line on the Express Track

There is a deep valley around the area, and it would be too difficult to dig a deeper tunnel, so the MTA decided: HEY, WHY NOT KEEP IT LEVEL BY MAKING AN ELEVATED RAILWAY?

Arif Akyuz Actually the IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit), the company that built the subway, designed this as elevated to essentially avoid the steep grades that would have been required had it remained underground. The MTA didn't come along until about a century later.

Elevated structures of NY and Chicago trains are completely outdated. It uses too much space and can't be modified for more modern rails since the structures cannot bear much more weight. Sleepers are still wooden and trains cannot run as fast as newer systems of elevated train around the globe.
