This was one of the most helpful videos about 360 I have seen as a newbie. I spent the last 5 hours battling a sketch and was curious about offsets. Found this video somehow from that and now you've solved about 20 different problems I was having. Thank you so much.

John, I'm excited about Fusion 360. I've worked with AutoCAD for 30 years. The commands in Fusion 360 are so similar! I thought about learning SolidWorks, but Fusion seems so much easier for me to learn. Your videos are a great source of info. I'm thinking of learning Fusion 360 and doing design work for a local job shop when I retire in a couple years. I don't need to make a living at it, but a few bucks might be nice.

Don't feel guilty about having an intern do the kinds of stuff that you had (and still sometimes have) to do. You are giving him a realistic view of what it takes to succeed at business. There are simply times everyone has to roll up their sleeves and do "menial" tasks. I have very senior people, paid a whole lot of money and I still expect them to take out the garbage (as do I sometimes). I am reminded of the time honored tradition in the Navy where every single person on an aircraft carrier (captain included) walk shoulder to shoulder to inspect literally every square inch the carrier deck for anything that could be sucked into a jet engine which could shut down the carrier deck -- which is undoubtedly the single most important function of the ship. By introducing this young man to reality he learns the stuff that really keeps a business running. It isn't always glamor and the sooner you learn that the better!

You should zoom in with your 1/8th circle at the end to check, you'd find out the gap is actually smaller than that. It's because your constraint distance is not orthogonal to the two small circles.

For the last slot sketch I would have done the same constraint method, but I would have done it along the default X and Y axis. As you finished your sketch I suddenly realized that by not using the X and Y but your own construction axis you can easily change the dimension between the slots, and more importantly you can easily change the quantity of slots. Change the 90 to 72 and you can pattern 5 slots. Nice work.

I use sketch constraints for everything. and math inside dimensions d1/d2 for mirrors rectangular patterns and circular patters. Don't need spread sheet. Just check out Manage Parameters. You can name and track all your dimensions there. So the part is built by logic and can be rescaled if required.

Let's pretend two of these discs are installed underneath a gravity hopper and used to feed 7mm rods or tubes. One issue I see is the rod/tubes getting wedged in the void because of the narrow wall angle. In that case, the arc that forms in inside edge of the void should be brought out to where the rod/tubes would hit the arc just before the diameter of the rod hits both sides of the void.

The image you were working from looked like an encoder wheel. But now it is some type of indexing plate? Fusion is so darn handy. That part could be an interesting work holding challenge! I hope we will see you cut it.
yep... thats what I was thinking. I use 3m 9579 series double sided tape. (pressure sensitive adhesive) It holds almost too good for thin parts. Kind of expensive but worth every penny if you need your parts to not slip.
@occamssawzall34868 жыл бұрын
+Stahlin Studios Acetone IE nail polish remover takes the adhesive right off. You can also get a wire clay cutter. (Like $5) that you can work underneath the part to get it off. Little safer than trying to pry it off with a metal putty knife.

@occamssawzall34868 жыл бұрын
Find it interesting that you built and sketchers out the cut out section. I would have built one of actual fin portions and arrayed that sketch around And extruded it. And I don't think using the straight line chord length of .125 between those slots is quite the right way. I would have set an additional.125 circle with the center coincidental to the midline circle and tangent to the construction line for the angle and the slot circle.
@occamssawzall34868 жыл бұрын
And a good check would to have been to sketch 2 straight lines across that are tangent to the radius at the end of the slot across to the slot radius opposite it. Then check the distance between the 2 lines you just drew and it should measure exactly .125
@saggynun18026 жыл бұрын
Thanks I learn a few things. :). Is there a reason to extrude and cut rather than choosing to not extruded those section in the first extrusion?

John. I could really use some assistance with a part I am trying to model up. I have scanned in the part but the part has small teeth all around it which the scanner sees but when I fuse the model the teeth all get mangled up. I have tried meshmixer and some other modeling programs but they are not the solution. Your time is precious so I will not want it for free. Please let me know if you could look at it for me. Thank you

Fusion changes the color too. Black is constrained, Green is fixed, Purple is projected, and Blue is unconstrained.

@djdelorie8 жыл бұрын
When doing the inner slots, using a chord along the construction circle as a reference will not give you 0.125 spacing - you can confirm this by setting the ID closer to the 0.5" center cutout (i.e. really thick "slots" will exaggerate any error). A better way is to add two construction lines 0.0625" away from, and parallel to, the axes, and make your end-circles tangent to those (i.e. construct your constraints first!). That way your gap is constant independent of radius (which a radial line is not, it describes a wedge). Another way is to set the distance between the centers of the two end-circles to a known distance, but then your gap is dependent on your slot width :-P

John, do you happen to know if there's a way to maintain parametric relations across files in fusion360 ?
@konobikundude8 жыл бұрын
Any idea if it's something that the Fusion360 folks would have in mind? I'm thinking about modular design and interchangeable components, so some way to manage changes between files would be awesome.

One place I could see this being especially useful for a shop like yours John, is for being able to reuse jigs and clamps, etc. modularize it a little.

@paulwilliamson59858 жыл бұрын
Depending on how the gap between slots was measured or derived, it seems unlikely that the chord is exactly what you want. You probably want the minimum distance between those two circles, which lies on the line between their centers. At this scale you might never see the difference, but it shouldn't be too hard to construct the right line. It's harder than it should be, though, since it appears you can't have a perpendicular constraint to a circle or arc, which would make it easy to construct the needed line segment. The best fully-parametric way I could come up with is to draw the line segment from circle center to circle center, and dimension it with a formula 1/8 + (d2-d1)/2, where d2 and d1 are the inner and outer diameters defining the slots. Can anybody see a nicer way to do this?
@PeterWMeek8 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that myself: constrain the center to center distance to be 1/8 plus the diameter (actually, twice the radii) of the circles. By using half the difference between the inner and outer diameters you are just calculating the length of a single radius. (If I haven't messed up how I'm thinking of it.) I think that will make the gap too small by one radius.
@paulwilliamson59858 жыл бұрын
Peter W. Meek I was thinking the same until I tried it. The diameter (two radii) we want for the little circles is the difference between the radii of the big circles. That's half the difference in their diameters.
@paulwilliamson59858 жыл бұрын
Good insight that what we really need is a distance constraint between the circle centers. I got conceptually hung up on drawing a line, and made it harder than it needed to be. Now if Fusion 360 would just let us dimension the distance between the circles themselves, we wouldn't even need a formula.
