Hello and welcome to another tutorial video from Basic Fishing. For today's tutorial video, I decided to go over the basics on salted baits. I had used a lot of salted baits and ever since I had started using salted baits this helped me to expand my options for fishing and I'll show you the basic way on how to process your own baits to salt for your fishing trips. I hope this video helps the beginners out there and please like and subscribe for more fishing videos.

I have to try this. I bought 5kg of squid by mistake. The wife is not happy with it in the freezer. This way I can store in the shed! Happy wife, happy life...thankyou Peter.

I always carry salted bait in my fishing/traveling bag: mussels, strips of squid, mackerel and other oily fish species, clam, even old beach worms (flounder seems to go crazy over salted, smelly beach worms). This comes in very handy specially during winter season, when fresh bait isn't always available OR becomes very expensive. And during the hot summer days you don't have to worry that your bait will start to seriously stink up your bag or go mush on you so much you can't even pick it up anymore. Salted bait is my preferred bait here, sometimes - when I feel like it - accompanied with a small feeder bag filled with old, almost-off bait from all sorts of left over pieces of fish from the freezer. Nothing goes to waste here, not even the fish heads. Those get mangled up with vegetable oil and fresh chopped garlic, then pored into ice-cube trays and then put into the freezer. Awesome bait, those little cubes. Just throw a few in the water to lure the fish in towards your spot. :) And here is a nice little trick to keep the kids busy near rocky surroundings: freeze up the guts of the fish in also ice cube tray. They make excellent crab bait, crab simply can't resist some good old guts. And kids love the thrill of fishing between the rocks to catch something. Just drop a cube into a fine but strong mesh netting (onion bag for example), tie a rope at the end and let them have fun with it. Watch them scream and yell in excitement and proud accomplishment when they haul in their catch of the day! :) To keep the cubes frozen, or at least cold enough to work with: plastic zip bag and ice. Or a cheap, portable, solar powered tiny "freezer" (Ebay). :)

I enjoyed this tutorial ~ I learnt a lot from you thank you! I also love the way that you fed the seagull! I study seagulls have been studying them for 18 years ~ they have the hardest life to live as a bird except for maybe the ones that shot at during hunting season! Seagulls remain on large bodies of water at night! The only come on Shore because they're injured! If they don't get enough food during the day sometimes they can die overnight! In Surfside Myrtle Beach over 2,000 died in one night it was the year they said don't feed the seagulls don't feed seagulls well they died! At night they have to fight the winds the rains the storms sometimes they have to fly all night they get exhausted their Wings gets sprained! I discovered taking care of injured seagulls that they only sleep one hour a day! At night the only close their eyes to Blink! I would too about staying out on the ocean having sharks trying to attack me along with my number one night time Predator the eagle! Oh well I could write two books on seagulls!

Try steaming the mussels until they're hard. Shell them and leave them in the fridge overnight. They're good at the mussel farms. Only need half a mussel.

When baits are curing do you refrigerate or leave out at room temperature?
@BasicFishingNZ
@BasicFishingNZ 6 ай бұрын
both actually. but for room temp you want to leave it out of the sun and put them somewhere dark and shady. the sun can harden the bait (this happened b4)

I bought 1kg of squid bait yesterday and a bag of iodized salt, I guess i've wasted the squid because of that, right? btw, where is this location @ 4:30, and can you show how you use bait cotton? also, how do you keep the used hooks to prevent rusting, or do you just dispose them at the end of the day? thanks
@BasicFishingNZ
@BasicFishingNZ 4 жыл бұрын
yea i usually use rock salt. if you maybe storage the squid with fish oil, you might be able to save it. for my bait cotton, i've got a demo on how i do it with mussel. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXqmd5iwl8qnY8k for the hooks, i clean them with freshwater. black magic hooks don't rust that badly so i don't dispose them at the end of the day. if it does rust, i usually use the sharpening stone to strap off the rust which works a treat

After bait salted. To keep it longer should we refrigerat. Or we can keep it in room temperature. And for how many dsys.
@BasicFishingNZ
@BasicFishingNZ 3 жыл бұрын
the salting prevents the bait from rotting so it can b kept out of the freezer forever as long as its in a sealed bag and away from heat and sun. although personally i always freeze mine

love the video! what happens if you leave the bait in the salt for more than 24hrs? I thought salt was a preservative and thinking may just leaving the bait in the salt until ready to use instead of leaving in the freezer (afraid wifey will throw out)
@BasicFishingNZ
@BasicFishingNZ 4 жыл бұрын
it would dry up the bait too much to the point where it will become fish jerky. all you are doing with the salt is to drain out any moisture which prevents bacteria from growing and breaking down the flesh
@mytwinbabies1
@mytwinbabies1 4 жыл бұрын
O ok, for some reason I thought the goal was to make fish jerky (totally dried out so no rotting will take place and can just keep in a ziplock and last forever without sticking in fridge or freezer). Will fish jerky not make good bait?thx!

All you need is pool salt. In the usa u can buy it 40lbs for 5$. Its very fine and you can coat evenly. Another plus is the bait doesn;t smell nearly as bad when handling it. Sometime flies wont even come around whereas with thawed bait u get a million flies.
