Workshops available. I do one per year, thats it! One planned for Scotland in 2023.
A final wrap up to a recent NZ roadtrip, doing Landscape Photography. is it possible to get good images without going up mountains? Several locations visited all in one video, as i cover 5000kms in a campervan shooting ten locations. This is the last in the recent South Island Videos uploaded onto youtube

A Dunsmuir production that, while long in the making, was extraordinary in its message and delivery. Ewan that was just fantastic. The story, the scenery, images, actors and music were just perfect. I think that may be the best one yet. Sheer genius and a masterclass in story telling and photography. While all of the images were awesome, I think the mossy rock is my favourite. Thank you so much for brightening the day and sharing this with us. (I'll get the mop now and clean up all this dribble on the floor, but it is worth it).

Love your work Ewan. Stunning images as usual. Yep roadside photography images in NZ are everywhere you go. I live in Hawkes Bay and I take my camera bag during my drives to work (not just the weekend) as you can literally find an image at any time of the day just off the road, beach scenes, rivers, rolling hills and single trees, jagged hills of the Ruahines or Kaweka's, sunbeams, waterfalls,Tuis, toi toi, and gorgeous light at unexpected moments, all taken 15-45 minutes from my home and from the roadside or at the most a short walk of 100 yards!

Just want to say how much I admire your vlogs and photos Euan. They impart a feeling of serenity as well as beauty that is so amazingly well portrayed in your images. You have given me a lot of inspiration so thank you. I am in recovery from a badly broken arm and my active sporting outdoors lifestyle has been curtailed somewhat. But I can still walk up a hill and carry a pack so I have rekindled my interest in photography, spent some money on new gear and have been gorging on youtube photography vlogs from you, Brett Wood, Micheal Shainblum, Mark Denny and Mads Peter Iverson. I am based at Nelson and have many many ideas and plans for future photography trips and shooting opportunities. So once again thanks for the inspiration and I look forward to all your future videos.

As you have just demonstrated, YES IT IS! It does of course depend on what the road passes but NZ has it in spades and a highly talented person hitting GO the button on the camera helps too! Another great set of images delivered perfectly. Seeing you at the end mull over 16 minutes or 8, no 5 minutes, it hit home the one thing I see all to often here as tourists jump out of their vehicle, just take a little time. I'm not expecting them to shoot LEs but just take in the view, not march 20 yards then stop, take a photo and turn round all in the same movement. A joy as always Ewan and my apologies for no humor (Note to self, I can do it!)

I was about to take issue with your comment that roadside photography is lazy photography but your video clearly showed a different message, especially when in your introduction piece you mentioned you feel lucky to have good health to access mountains. I really enjoyed this video and again you produced excellent images. I have a number of prolapsed discs in my lumbar spine and neck plus arthritis in my shoulders, elbows, knees and feet, walking can be painful and I'm often only able to access flat ground close to car parks and no more than a mike from the car, sometimes I can do a lot more than this. It was good to see someone shooting from the roadside or the car park. I've been able to use my limitations to spark creativity and I've had a couple of articles published in magazines about shooting from flatland and close to the car. All the best.

HI Tony. At least i got OUT of the car LOL. That was the thing that i see some people do, which without medical reasoning, is plain lazy. Hi Ewan, I've recently come across your videos and found my way to your channel. Truly appreciate your work and the effort you've put in everything you've done. The intentionality with your photography and the videos. I do landscape from time to time and find your work beautiful. But I'm not here for either of those. I've been working as a photographer since around 2000-2001. Fashion, corporate, events, portraits, products and so on. My colleagues are either focused entirely on the business aspect of it or the social dynamics it brings to their lives. Working with studios, production companies, going to celebrity parties etc... All part of the work to a certain degree. But the longer I've been working at it and the struggles that need to be overcome from being unemployed to managing bookings minutes apart from each other. The creative goals have remained my primary focus. Exploring new ways (for myself) to do the same thing, to keep things fresh and exciting for myself. I spent two years not picking up the camera and being dissatisfied with everything I did. The body and mind rejected what I was doing and needed to switch off. I had a point and a direction when I started typing, so I better get to it. Basically it's good to come across someone who speaks my language and communicates it well. It's good to see how you approach your subject and deal with situations. It's been over a year since there was a major change in my life and I'm spending a lot more time walking in the streets with a camera again. Moving away from a 1Dx, super fast focusing and data recording machines to a GFX 100s has brought some of the joy of using a Mamiya again, without the laborious drawbacks. Slowing the process down considerably compared to the Canon's and Sony's and allowing me to breathe in the light and the structured chaos of the streetscape. Still figuring out how to translate such scenes into panoramas while including the noise and electricity of hundreds of people bouncing around with opposing energy. Just adding that gear never interested me beyond the point of it accomplishing what I needed. It’s even less relevant now. Although there is some pleasure in working with a tool that bends to your needs. Regards.

Hi Kohi. Lovely to hear form you and the way you explain and passion for/ journey through the vagaries of photography in the commercial world - fickle, isnt it! I too have spanned various disciplines in photography, settling on landscapes, for entirely different reason than i had, for say... portraits or commercial work. I only know one or two landscape photographers personally, who have made a mark in this discipline, which is comforting as i do landscapes for my own selfish reasons, and am lucky to be able to make a living form it. It is an oxymoron, as whilst i have to earn... i want to be very acute in what it is i do do, to make money. These videos too, have been an extension into videography, to expend my creativity which i am enjoying the production of and yet another way to express my creativity. Teaching one person one thing was the goal, and feedback is always appreciated, as (despite any view count) confirms that people watch and often enjoy. We are potentially and egotistical lot! LOL. The landscape photography allow mw to get away, and often sit for days... just watching whaat is going on around me and a bit like the Walter Mitty Character... often not even take a shot. I did go on a landscape contract once for 5 days and never took the camera out, as the conditions... well they weren't right! Really good to hear form you mate, and wish youa ll the best for your continued travel through this often murky world. Kind regards, Ewan

The important thing in photography is taking photographs! Sometimes it's so simple. A while ago I remembered exactly that and found the joy of photography again. Trying new things, don't think about what others would say, and having fun. That's my motto. Thank you, again for your video. I‘m looking forward to the next one.

Ewan, followed you for a few years now, and have something to throw in to the mix, you mention that it's important to visualise your shot, I have aphantasia (inability to visualise things) so it adds a unique constraint to my photography (have to shoot what I see through the finder), and post (consequently I tend to just use raw / as shot 90% of the time) and also means I need the photos to remember places I've been, and my family pets etc, odd one eh! It has its benefits though as each flick through the back catalogue is like seeing things for the first time again. Anyway, not sure why I thought you'd be interested, but you may be, greetings from Scotland! Nathan

I look forward to your new book. I have to settle my mind down one day and do one of my own. I have crawled all over the South Island as a professional hunter and wildlife photographer and tripped the shutter countless times from inside the car. If I'm a passenger on the road at the time its like stop, stop there's a shot in that. Friendships get tested after a few too many stops lol. I know there is a book in there for me but its hard to still my mind, sit down and get it sorted. Now I find myself with a new wife and living in Northern Ireland which is kind of like the total opposite of New Zealand. I have been a professional hunter nearly all my life biased mostly in the Ureweras, I but put down my rifle 15 years ago and took up wildlife photography, mostly bird photography. I do love landscapes but the birds always and still do take priority. Its cool learning the new birds in this country but I want to focus on landscapes a bit more now. I gave my new bride a whirlwind tour to show her the South Island for 6 weeks before we left to live in NI close to her parents. Northern Ireland is mostly very small intimate landscapes with ever present houses and signs of humanity. Rosie found the scale of the South Island landscape a bit overwhelming and it kind of shut her down. Now living in on the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic I find myself faced with the challenge of constant terrible weather, no real wilderness to retreat too and just enjoy silence and solitude. I have been watching Simon Booth in an attempt to look small, see small and immerse myself in that world. I have only just found your channel yesterday, I love your calmness and you kind of remind me of First Man Photography. Both of you being cops must bring out that calmness and control. Don't be like me and keep putting off doing that book. Mean time I'm going to watch all your vlogs and use them to help me see better. I follow all the usual suspects Page, Hardcastle, Heaton, Danson and Mads etc, but you have a different spirit. I'm more like Nigel Danson trying to run around in every direction all at the same time lol Thankyou for sharing your passion and I really hope your channel takes off. Just a heads up give Karamea a good look see. Its out of the way but well worth it. Also if you revisit Milford pop up to key summit and walk out the dividing ridge over looking lake Gunn and the Greenstone/ Caples river.

Many thanks for your feedback and also having a look. NZ to Ireland is quite a switch indeed, and i understand that after being subject to all that NZ brings, particularly the SI and also the Uruweras in and around Taneatua, and up the Ruatoki... that saller landscapes seem... 'difficult to be inspired by or to shoot' I think you are onto something through with seeing differently, as i often find myself being flat after an epic trip to the south too! I get how your wife would find it overwhelming, both in size, and in its beauty too huh!? Im actually heading down, running a workshop in Aug/Sept and Key Summit is on the agenda. Been nefore but always been cloudy. Cool spot huh!? Thanks for coming along for the journey and look forward to hearing form you again. Stay safe. Regards, Ewan

At least in New Zealand there is always another peak to climb. By the way I see you like the lindis. Shame on you Ewan …. “Lazy photography?” - to ‘poo-poo’ roadside photography or location! Remember ….. it was Chase Jarvis who said; “The best camera is the one you have with you.” What I say is, “The best location is the place you are currently standing!” More often than not …. You don’t need to walk miles, after you’ve parked up, to find a good location. Indeed, all too often it’s directly under your nose!
@EwanDunsmuirImages
@EwanDunsmuirImages 4 ай бұрын
Hello there - and yes - I subscribe to the 'best camera is the best on" etc also, as i do about location. When i am on location - i take up a position and stick it out, even if there may technically be a better location somewhere else. My "Lazy photography' comment is about the incidences where when at or heading to be on location (which is my job and hence a lot of my time) I see people drive for some time, stop the car, wind down the window at the roadside, take a shot and drive onto the next possibly lazy location. Its the 'not getting out of the car[ (when you have the physical ability) which i find "lazy" you would be surprised how often it happens. Photography is all about soaking in a moment and taking the environment in, not just stop window down, click, window up, drive off and "we have seen 'Milford Sound'" That is a 4 hour drive from QT, is one of the most beautiful places on the planet and photographs are sometimes, (but fortunately rarely) taken from the drivers seat of a car in ideal conditions. This video is actually supposed to Celebrate roadside photography, not have a 'go at it', and consequently, was one of my more favourite videos to film... because of the message. = ) Sorry if my message in the vid was confusing.
