I think it's really fitting that this was their first encounter. You could feel how terrified Obi-Wan was. We all expected the first time he'll light up his lightsaber will be some kind of heroic moment where he shows how much of a badass he is. Instead, the first time he lit his lightsaber was in pure terror and fear, using it as a flashlight to figure out where Vader was. This whole encounter had horror movie vibes and I think it's really fitting for the whole story.

I've seen so many people whining and complaining that the fight sucked and was the worst thing ever...like really? What did they expect? Battle Of The Heroes 2.0? Of course Obi Wan was gonna get his ass handed to him, but this is just a warm up, the real epic fight will be in the final episode I'm sure. Which I think is where we'll see Vader do something that ages Obi Wan considerably, so him being so old in Rebels and A New Hope makes sense. My theory is he'll use Force drain to drain his life away, Hayden has also hinted that Vader is responsible for the aging

According to canon, most of the Imperial military didn't even know who Vader was even after the destruction of the first Death Star, and that happens ten years after this series. I think a lot of people struggle to understand how vast an entire galaxy is.
@RyanRusin2 жыл бұрын
The reason most people struggle to grasp that is a direct fault of Disney -- we can only see so many desert planets in a year.
@christopherpoet4582 жыл бұрын
@@RyanRusin I am going to have to disagree with you there. We have only had two desert planets. Tatooine and Jaku. Its not as bad as you just made it sound. Additionally, Disney has brought several new planets to screen. Mandalorion saw several. We got two now in this show. Lothal from Rebels. The Clone wars (while only partially under Disney) had a massive hoast of planets. There is no shortage of planets to put in prespective the scale of the Star Wars Universe. The root of the problem is the interconnected stories and is a very understandable side effect. So far, Star Wars has doubled to trippled its cast of leads since the release of ANH. Just about all the characters are linked in some way. Mando is one of the very very few characters that is oblivious to the main cast. Boba... can't really count him. He was there through the Empire and even confronted Luke and the gang on several occasions. Younger Boba was around through the downfall of the Republic. So many characters that are just way too connected. It sets in this image of everyone knowing everyone. Which makes ideas like Vader being some mythical being that 90% of the galaxy bairly heard about a lot harder to digest. And, while this is no insult to anyone, I will be honest... a lot of people have a hard time wrapping their heads around that kind of scale. They litterly struggle to fathem the idea of a universe existing to that degree and not just in Star Wars.

@dirufanboy19712 жыл бұрын
I always just assumed Vader wasn't actually all that well known outside certain Imperial circles and Tatooine is in the Outer Rim, the Out Back of the Galaxy, so I can believe it was ten years before Obi Wan learned of Anakin's fate. As to the whole "When I left you I was but a learner" I now take that to mean "When I ceased to be a Jedi I was but a learner", so I'm not struggling with any of this - it think it all fits. Also I feel that Obi Wan receiving those burns would account for the "jankyness" of his fighting style in New Hope.

My prediction: There will be their rematch and Obi Wan will win that one and we will get two comments. The first is that Obi Wan will call Vader "Anakin" and he will declare that "The Jedi you knew is dead." resulting in Obi Wan mockingly calling him "Darth" (thus why when they meet in A New Hope he only calls him Darth and not Vader) and Obi Wan will also claim that for all his power he is still just a student with so much to learn.

even if he heard about vader he had no reason to assume it was anakin. it's important to understand that the galaxy do be kinda big. @TheClever692 жыл бұрын
I like how this series seems to want to show the full extent of Vader's injuries, and the horror of his existence. There was a really good paragraph in the ROTS novelisation about it. I'll put an excerpt below: This is how it feels to be Anakin Skywalker, forever: The first dawn of light in your universe brings pain. The light burns you. It will always burn you. Part of you will always lie upon black glass sand beside a lake of fire while flames chew at your flesh. You can hear yourself breathing. It comes hard, and harsh, and it scrapes nerves already raw, but you cannot stop it. You can never stop it. You cannot even slow it down. You don’t even have lungs anymore. Mechanisms hardwired into your chest breathe for you. They will pump oxygen into your bloodstream forever. "Lord Vader? Lord Vader, can you hear me?" And you can’t, not in the way you once did. Sensors in the shell that prisons your head trickle meaning directly into your brain. You open your scorched-pale eyes; optical sensors integrate light and shadow into a hideous simulacrum of the world around you. Or perhaps the simulacrum is perfect, and it is the world that is hideous. Vader has a horrible existence. Constant pain and suffering, which is what Palpatine wanted in order to keep his connection to the Dark Side strong enough that he'd stay deadly and loyal, but weak enough that he could never overthrow him one day. Unfortunately for him, he underestimated Vader's love for Luke
@drattyg80992 жыл бұрын
The amount of pain and hate in "You should have killed me when you had the chance." was palpable. He resents Obi-wan and the order in general for their hand in pushing him straight into Palpatine's open arms, but he especially resents his brother for not having the guts to end him on mustafar and spare him the last 10 years of this nightmarish, bleak existence.

@@drattyg8099 I always felt that Vader was a bit overrated in the original trilogy (not as overrated as Boba Fett, who did next to nothing in Empire and just got rekt in Return) but his development was very inconsistent for various reasons. When they made ANH, Vader wasn't Anakin yet. George hadn't come up with that concept, hence his dialogue with Obi Wan feeling strange in retrospect. Then in ESB he was Anakin and he had some more depth but was still mostly evil, but then in ROTJ he suddenly had conflict and reservations. It felt uneven. But everything since then - the prequels, The Clone Wars, Rebels, Rogue One, even his cameo in Jedi Fallen Order - has given him so much depth that he's now an S tier character to me

Yes, it's not for nothing that Vader is called the Emperor's Chain Dog, he is an intergalactic butcher, despite the fact that he is crippled and alive thanks to his armor and life support system, he eventually reached a peak in Strength because he can lift huge dimensions with just a thought and a clenched fist (in the canonical comic, he once destroyed a dam and sank an entire city! Anakin was feared before being called a Warrior Without Fear because as a duelist and a daredevil he was one of the most dangerous opponents in the galaxy and now he has become a real killing machine in the literal sense) so Obi-Wan's fear is justified because Anakin did not rest when the Emperor saved him, he built a fortress on Mustafar, cleaned out the planets in search of escaped Jedi, and finally received the title of Lord and was assigned to command his stormtrooper squads, not to mention the formation of Inquisitors and the fact that he dominated the table of the generals of the Empire.
@JynxedKoma2 жыл бұрын
He wanted Obi-Wan to suffer the same pain he caused to himself on Mustafar. But the only reason he let Obi-Wan get away, is because he knew there was a rebellion growing through the act of the shooter saving him and the Droid carrying Obi-Wan away. So Vader letting Obi-Wan escape was strategically logical so he can root out and destroy both the rebellion and Jedi root and stem.

Combine that with Obi-Wan hanging around the outer room and largely staying isolated, it would not surprise me at all that he had not heard anything about Vader. Vader isn't super active as a leader of the Empire at this point in the timeline so he'd just be seen as another Imperial agent at this point and there are a ton of agents of the Empire across the galaxy.

This show is doing such a good job of pulling Obi-Wan out of his defeat and depression; first the young Jedi he couldn't/didn't save, then Leia (!!!) (that kid is so excellent), the Clone trooper who was panhandling, now the people along the Path, plus signs that his old friends are still fighting... and now Vader. Gyaahhh. He's just been surviving and hiding the last 10 years, now he's got to learn how to live. Loved you guys' reactions.

I think the line "When I left you...now I am the master" just refers to when he left the order, or 'left him' as a Jedi. Because Anakin was only a knight and never became a master. He doesnt say "The LAST time I saw you I was but the learner" People can take that line a little too literally. However, I do agree that there has to be another encounter. Because in ROTJ when Luke tries to get him to come with him he says "Obi-Wan once thought as you do" and we need to see that to maintain continuity. That's not a line that can be misinterpreted

Great point, Steven, about Vader's line to Luke in ROTJ "Obi Wan once thought as you do." In that line, Vader is thoughtful, and it wasn't a boast. So it really meant something that Obi Wan wanted to redeem him, you can even tell in his delivery to Luke.

Fun fact: Tala Durith, the Imperial officer/underground railroad agent, likes Mandalorians. Well, not so much the character but the actress, Indira Varma, has been in two series, Rome and Game of Thrones, where her character was either the wife or lover of another character whose actor has appeared either as a voice or in live action as a Mandalorian. Kevin Mckidd, was in the HBO series Rome, voiced Fenn Rau in Rebels, and Pedro Pascal, was in Game of Thrones, stars as the Mandalorian from The Mandalorian.

I think Vader was just toying with him, he could have just walked through the fire, used the force to put it out, use the force to grab Kenobi or walk around and he didn’t. Plus Vader had 10 years of training his new body so I doubt Kenobi can stand against him no matter the training.

Predictions. There will DEFINITELY be another Obi v Vader confrontation giving us everything we want... I believe we will see Qui Gon or at least hear him as he's already recently done voice work for one of the animated series so why not? I even think we might end up seeing ANOTHER Jedi to help Obi Wan get fighting fit... OR... he may even go pay Yoda a visit on Dagobah. If there's one thing we've learned from Disney Star Wars series is that they are very good at hiding plot lines and cameos and also, they do seem to enjoy giving us proper fan WOW WTF moments... So as far as I'm concerned, nothing is off limits for these next three episodes. Loving the series so far and especially loving your quickly posted reactions as always. Keep it up guys!

My theory was that she, as a youngling, idolized Obi-wan and Anakin during the clone wars and maybe what she experienced during the purge led her to suspect, but she never knew and she definitely knew better than to press the matter. They showed that she's particularly gifted at gleaning information from people through the force. She picked out Owen in the crowd, she probed Haja easily. I think when she said Vader's name, the emotional impact threw Obi-wan for a loop as his worst nightmares are realized. All these feelings and memories just flood through him, unbidden, and she felt it and made the connection. And she's been trained so well for manipulation and interrogation and breaking people down, she's so smooth, she rolled with it.

But as for reva I still do not like this character whatsoever simply a show horse to be propped up by Executives behind the scenes to say look look what we did diversity!, even though diversity has always been in Star Wars with the many many black characters that have already existed and who haven't caught any heat which is likely because they weren't forced into a story for the sake of political agendas you know the good old days when BS politics were forcibly infused within the Star Wars mythology!
