Kyle Campbell have you even watched rebels? The empire are usually fools. Almost never gain a victory, generally incompetent, always ramble on about fear and how it will control people while merely killing their own commanders and lieutenants, and the inquisitors are weak as hell. The only threat on the show was Vader and at times thrawn, even though he constantly got screwed over by plot armor. Overall the show didn’t make the empire look very intimidating most of the time, even under Vader’s and thrawn rule.

Righ?! It's magic to have two actors display that much organic chemistry with one another. Johnson could have explored the dynamics of their friendship, teamwork- they could have offered a bit of buddy comedy road trip energy transporting together through space, helping different facets of the Resistance along the way.. That way, when one of them actually do get killed off (I'd probably save til the last movie) the audience would have such an emotional connection to the characters by that point.

When this movie first came out, I was firmly in the "this is amazing this is the best SW movie ever" camp, and i think my own personal "character arc" over the past several years has been learning to be reasonable and acknowledge all the things that are wrong with this film. Like, I think when I first watched it I was just completely starstruck with the cinematography and direction, and didn't want to admit that there are some very major flaws. I just wish either JJ or Ryan could have directed the entire trilogy instead of splitting it between two directors.

If JJ directed it, he would've turned the whole series into a butt ton of setups but with almost none to no resolution. I had the opposite character arc, I thought the movie was shit. But I think I've learnt to see the bad AND GOOD of the film, like the whole Canto Bight thing was BS but the final scene with Luke trolling the fuck out of Kylo is genius or that the Luke being a prick kinda sucks, but the cinematography slaps so hard. In reality it isn't a really good or a really bad movie, I think the highs are really high and the lows are abysmally low.

Okay… So Luke can redeem Darth Vader of all people but not a student that he actually considered killing momentarily? No offense but this argument of yours doesn’t hold water. If Luke led Ben to believe he was plotting to kill him while he was already immersed in the force iteself then Luke is without debate at fault for corrupting him. Luke is more than responsible for Ben and saying “no” like so just shows regression at best. I’d honestly argue that this is misrepresentation and given the themes that Rian seems to be gunning for I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point in filming he intended to misrepresent him I mean it’s kind of obvious that Rian tried many different ideas on set only to run out of time and money and being forced to use what footage he has

i think the biggest problem of the trilogy is just the lack of a consistent creative vision. its clear jj had a vision for the trilogy that rian didn't share, and instead of working with the direction tlj had set the series in he tried to retcon it. i genuinely loved that rey's parents were nobodies and going back on that while somehow resurrecting palpatine just felt cheap. same with completely writing rose out. i wish they'd just had one person direct all three (or at least plot out the major stuff beforehand) and it would've felt like a coherent trilogy. as it stands, each film is actively trying to retcon the one that came before it and it's just not fun to watch at all.
@Onychoprion27

I honestly don’t see TLJ as retconning TFA. It takes the start, which is a pretty standard adventure clone of ANH, and builds it into something new and nonstandard. It’s ROS that goes full retcon on everything, because the so many people complained that TLJ wasn’t standard.

But everything about the context made it ring a bit hollow. I liked the Luke and Rey bits more than the rest and would actually have traded in the Canto Byte scenes for more of their character interactions. Like the idea that Luke has been as dismayed by the reimergence of the dark side after he worked so hard to vanquish it as the fans were is an interesting idea and to have someone a lot like he used to be restore his faith in, the light side I guess, is interesting.

So I know this is like a year later, but according to Dave Filoni, the Darth Maul fight is actually one of the most important fights in the saga. Originally, this may not have held much weight, but it becomes clear later that Qui-Gon is one of the only Jedi who is beginning to realize the flaws of the order, and thus, feels he needs to train Anakin because he is the chosen one. Obi-Wan, though a wise Jedi, holds to the ways of the order unlike his master. Anakin's many questions of the council and the Jedi order lead him to the dark side, where if Qui-Gon was his master, his questions could have been justified and he may have remained on the light. This is why the Darth Maul fight is called the "Duel of the Fates."

But he doesn't because he realizes its not the jedi way, and because he thinks, "havent i learned a thing from being a jedi i shouldnt use the force for attacking?" but it was too late. ben woke up and was convinced luke was about to kill him. So by trying to stop kylo ren, luke created it. That point made sense to me. Luke has always been a dude just doing what he thinks is right. I feel like Luke's failure of character when he tries to kill Ben might be made a little more believable if maybe they had shown or told us how precarious the peace created after destruction of the Empire and how it came at a very high personal cost, so that Luke's paranoia about any little thing potentially destroying everything he worked so hard to make would push him to actually consider killing his nephew.

@thegrapethief5514

I think it would be far more interesting if they actually tried to deconstruct and then reconstruct his character. What if Luke’s unwavering hope that his nephew just needed a chance to be helped allowed Kylo to exploit Luke’s empathy and destroy his Jedi Order? And thus Luke runs away and goes to hide not only because he can’t bear to face Han and Leia after what he let their son become, but also because he basically had an existential crisis about how his compassion that saved Darth Vader and the galaxy might have now doomed it. And then Rey shows up and Luke helps her to see that Kylo Ren may not be beyond redemption, but Rey also gets Luke to finally forgive himself and realize that even if Ben could be saved, he threw the chance away and exploited Luke’s love. And then maybe instead of that whole astral projection thing, Luke just appears to Kylo in his mind, and Kylo goes down to fight him, but everyone just sees him swinging at the air, which would not only make for good comic relief but would also sow distrust in Kylo as the Supreme Leader because he looks like he’s insane. And then don’t have Luke just die for no reason other than plot convenience. This, to me, is an infinitely more interesting idea and is far more accurate to Luke as a character. It would begin by deconstructing Luke’s defining trait by showing what happens when faith in the good of others is betrayed, but then reconstruct Luke as a character by allowing him to grow and learn from this with a more down-to-earth perspective. What they did disappointed me because they just show us this old angry hermit, call him Luke Skywalker, and expect us to clap because they portrayed him negatively.

I think Kanto Byte could've been so amazing thematically if Po had gone with Finn. Po is a hotshot pilot who loves fighting the fight and doesn't take into consideration the despair that comes with war. Finn on the other hand is a child soldier who abandoned his army because of the atrocities they were committing and through FA chose to join the resistance and fight the first order. We could have had Po realise how much pain and destruction the war really causes through Finn. And how much of a gutpunch would it have been for both of them to find out both sides are supplied by the same people! Also they should have made the kid skaves more impactful considering, again, FINN WAS A CHILD SOLDIER. The parallels they could've drawn would have been so good if they didn't throw Finn's background to the wayside!

I think Rose could’ve been redeemed by making her the spy. Then it makes sense for her to take Finn on this wild goose chase to Canto Byte, find the wrong code breaker who will turn them in and even knock Finn’s ship from hitting that laser when he tries to sacrifice himself. She’s ‘saving him’ but really she’s just trying to help the first order. Her sister could be a spy as well, maybe one who ended up defecting after spending time with the resistance since she bombs a Star Destroyer. After her sister dies, Rose is angry at the resistance for turning and killing her sister and All of Rose’s speeches about rebellion and her line about saving what you love are actually what her sister said to her when she was still alive, but now she’s using those resistance ideals to make finn and co trust her. And it works on the characters but the audience is put off by her and knows something’s up. Then in ROS Hux doesnt have to be the rebel spy, Rose is the First Order spy. She could even be working for Hux and lead him to where the rebels are so he can suprise attack them while taking all the credit and making Kylo look bad.

I think after what we've seen of Luke in the Mandalorian and the Book of Boba Fett that perhaps LucasFilm is trying to lay the groundwork to help justify Luke's portrayal in TLJ. We see *"the Legend"* that tore through Dark Troopers like a hot knife through butter from the eyes of people like Din Djarin & Gideon. While Luke might not consciously let that get to his head, subconsciously maybe moments like this reinforce the idea that he is the protector of the galaxy. In the Book of Boba Fett, we see him offer Grogu a choice of choosing Yoda's lightsaber OR Djarin's chainmail, the exact same mistake that lead his father down the path of the dark side.

Yoda's lesson of the importance of failure, anything on the island, Luke confronting Kylo Ren one last time, his death scene. Oh, definetelly. Duel of the Fates is a lot better. BUT it needs some revisions and fixes, like Rey and Poe's romance, it comes out of nowhere. It was just such an odd moment. One or both of them should have been dead by that point. "We win by...saving what we love" is such a weird, try-too-hard line. And while John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran have decent chemistry, their interactions were so badly written that I wasn't even sure that Rose liked Finn until she kissed him. The explosion in the background just compounds how dumb it is. I wonder if this was one of the weird callbacks/"rules" that some fans are so obsessed with. In _The Empire Strikes Back,_ there was the epically entertaining relationship between Han and Leia. In _Attack of the Clones,_ there was the epically cringey relationship between Anakin and Padme. So maybe Disney demanded some overt romance in the second film of *this* trilogy, and Rian panicked and threw that silly moment in there. What makes it even weirder is that there was already a perfect opportunity for a romantic moment. Kylo and Rey had amazing chemistry. He clearly forgave her for scarring his face, and she trusted him enough to meet him alone in hostile territory. THEY HELD HANDS. If *they* had kissed after taking out all the Praetorian Guards, *that* would have fulfilled the romantic moments quota, made at least some sense, and been emotionally charged. Me and all my friends would have swooned 😂

''Rey born from nobodies'' was one of the best things in the entire new trilogy. An entire saga about a family with immense power because a guy manipulated life itself to make the greatest Force user ever, then comes a girl of humble origins who is just as good as a Force user, why? Because, there's no reason, it just happens. Or maybe there was a reason but only the Force knows and Rey happened to be the one born when the Force did its thing. No bloodline, just sheer luck. This way Rey would have changed her aim from ''finding my family'' to ''I have found a family'' with Leia, Poe, Finn, Rose... it could have made for a great twist and fresh take on the SW formula. But no, she had to be powerful because she's linked to the Galactic Emperor of Evil.

I think the best way to summarise the three trilogies, is: The OT was a series with a strong vision, and a strong sense of collaborative talent, Lucas set the stage, and directors (Marquand, Kershner) screenwriters (Lawrence Kasdan) editors (Marcia Lucas, ) sound designers (Ben Burtt) etc were all given the room to maneuver to bring their talent to its greatest effect. the PT was a series with a strong vision, but a very weak sense of collaboration of talent. Lucas set a potentially strong plotline in motion, but without stronger directors like Kershner, or stronger screenwriters like Kasdan, and with Lucas in complete control, NO-ONE's talent really flourished to full effect. The ST was a series with a very strong collaboration of talent, from potent directors like Johnson, to good editors, actors, cinematographers etc. they were all given the freedom to work to their best... however... there was no sense of vision, no overarching idea, subsequently they're putting their strongest work into a flawed final blueprint. the OT is a solid house built out of wood. the PT is a sizeable mansion built out of mud. and the ST is a small shack built out of bricks.

I would prefer it if Rose and Finn made a close bond at Canto and have more scenes of them getting to know about each other, something akin to Han and Leia in ESB, and not learning about the horrors of war opportunists and what not. Then her saving Finn would at least feel impactful even if he's doing it for the greater good, because she's a human as well and can have emotions that contradicts logic. She just lost her sister, and she doesn't want to lose another, I think this is what Rian was going for but Canto is so distracting that it doesn't feel impactful. And yes, Canto is the only gripe I have about this movie, it's like the entirety of Jabba part of the story in ROTJ.

Alright, before this comments section gets explosive, I would like to agree wholeheartedly. I mean, Star Wars is outstanding, and the last thing I would want( and I’m sure I can say this about at least some of the fans) would be a repetitive story simply because newer screenwriters aren’t confident enough to do something new.

Lemme address one of the things I 100% disagree with you on; Snoke. I think you missed the entire point of why the Sith always fail. Let's go through a few examples. Why did Darth Nihilus fail? Because he could not see beyond his power grab, which was his ultimate downfall as a wound in the force. In short, tunnel vision. Why did Anakin lose to Obi-Wan? He could not see beyond his pure hate and anger he had not only for his brother for betraying him, but everyone around him for supposedly abandoning him. In short, tunnel vision. Why did Palpatine get yeeted into space chunks? Because he was so angry and spiteful at yet another pathetic Jedi who could not see the power of the dark side, that he never saw Vader coming back to the light and killing him. In short, tunnel vision. Why did Snoke not see the saber turn towards him instead of Rey? Because he was so focused on the hate and inner turmoil and the raw emotion coming from it, and he got too invested in the pure power and unleashing of emotions. IN SHORT, TUNNEL VISION. This narrow-minded, hate-fueled, raw-emotion driven mindset is what has always led to the downfall of even the greatest of Sith. And Snoke is just one more example of this. It's actually one of the few things I enjoy about this movie.

Also you asked for comments about the throne room fight: The fight maintains the tension of Kylo and Reys ally dynamic, which was missing from the prequel fight. In the prequels Maul was nobody, the fight is only important in the sense of star wars mythos, but in the Last jedi Kylo and Rey are actual characters who have struggled with their identities as demonstrated by the films, the end of the fight revealing Kylos true loyalty. We waited with baited breath during awesome visual choreography to see what Ben would choose

The reason why the Last jedi is my favorite film of the Disney era is just one fact it took risks, it tried to be different and yes I will admit not everything in this movie works eg. Canto byte and Poe and Holdo's dumb argument. But it tried to do things differently like having the main character not being related to anyone special and having Luke be a hopeless and broke man instead of just assuming he lived happily ever after and instead of the villian being redeemed in the way Vader was he instead kills Snoke and does what Vader never had the nerve to do. Honestly after watching ROS i was so appalled for the fact instead of building off of the storylines this film left they were instead like "let's just retcon everything because a bunch of people complained on the internet about it instead of trying to tell a satisfying story we'll just do everything everyone knows is going to happen but we'll make it happen in the most boring and predictable way imaginable" The whole Rey is a Mary Sue honestly wasn't a big issue because in TFA and TLJ she made mistakes and had things to learn but the biggest thing was that she wasn't the only character who did all the important things in the plot (Go and rewatch ROS and tell me if any character but Rey does anything that ultimately matters) This is absolutely the best review of this movie i've ever seen absolutely agree with most of your thoughts Schaff. Everyone who hates this movie i just want to ask what's better a movie that took chances and tried to challenge the themes of Star wars and do something incredibly different or a film that ends it's trilogy's story in the most rushed and nostalgia batting way possible and instead of challenging people's perceptions on the franchise it goes the most aggressively safe way possible because JJ Abrams gave into fan hate.

Adrian Naranjo From what I heard LucasFilm is going to do another Star Wars saga set during the Old Republic where the films will be similar to the Marvel films, in terms of their format. That leads me believe that LucasFilm wanted to do that story more than the sequel trilogy because the sequel trilogy almost feels rushed so they can do what they really want, a MCU-like series but for Star Wars.

It's too bad that so far they've refused to take on one thing that they _should_ be using from the MCU - *meticulously planning out all of the films ahead of time.* I'm hoping they'll learn from that mistake with this rumored High Republic film series, because honestly the obvious lack of planning was _by far_ the biggest problem with the sequel trilogy.

34:53 "It left no intriguing plot threads for a third film to work with." I honestly can't help but disagree with that statement simply because of the fact that the original Episode 9 script (Duel of the Fates) exists and after reading that script, it actually continued most of the plot threads of TLJ and took them in interesting directions. Now that script itself was still very flawed, but those flaws would've been much easier to fix than the flaws in TROS imo. If Disney simply kept that script and refined the flaws that it had, then the Skywalker Saga could've easily ended on a satisfying note. People probably would've softened on TLJ had Disney actually stuck with the DOTF script. Also making Kylo Ren the main villain is still an intriguing plot thread that TLJ set up. It's not like there was NOTHING that Episode 9 could've expanded upon.
