You brought up a key solution to today's culture wars. Not just in Star Wars but also in real life there are people who demonize the opposition to the point that themselves become what they sought to destroy to begin with. What we need to is unity, not hatred. What we need is to remember that we have more in common than we have different.

Thanks for the balanced take, Allen. I couldn't agree with you more regarding toxicity within the Star Wars fan community. However, I would be wary of conflating it with the general culture wars going on in our societies right now. What people in the US are currently experiencing - the questioning of science and reality, the normalization of politically motivated violence, and the undermining of democracy - is nothing less than the rise of fascism similar to what my country went through almost a century ago. If the paradox of tolerance tells you anything, it's that such tendencies must be addressed and torn out by the root before they take over society and unleash violence into the world. Whether you were aware of each other's differences or not, tribalism is effectively ingrained into your bipartisan political system. Regardless of political leaning, however, we should learn from the mistakes of the past - there's no coming together with those who trample on the very values our nations were founded on. If there's anything you could take away from this show, it's that some things are worth fighting for. The people whose national colors you proudly display on your screen learned that the hard way.

"What Disney needs, is an auteur heck they don't even have to be a huge Star Wars fan, they just have to be GOOD at making movies. That's not much to ask for." Episodes 5 and 6 were co written by Andrew Stanton, who has a DECORATED career writing some of Pixar's BIGGEST movies, even as far back as co-writing Toy Story. So the upgrade in quality leads me to wonder WHY on EARTH didn't they hire him as the lead writer from the jump? THIS is the type of quality writing we should've had from the get go. And even then, thanks to them STILL having Harold as a writer for those episodes, the episodes were a mess overall. If it was JUST Stanton writing it, from start to finish, this show would be A tier, rather than Mid Tier. Characters as nuanced as Anakin, and Obi-Wan DO NOT belong in the hands of someone with cursory knowledge of Star Wars, yet this project was given to someone with cursory knowledge.

How comparing the shot of a unhindered spaceship taking off smoothly to one of another ship being rocked back and forth between Vader force pull and its engines desperately trying to carry it away can tells us something about the quality and smoothness of the CGI animation in the two shows? It's like comparing Vader in Rogue One to Vader in the last quarter of Obi Wan Part 6 and saying of the later "It looks wrong, he moved like a zombie, the voice modulation was completely messed up and the mask was broken".

One of *the* biggest entertainment companies being cheap shows exactly why trickle down economics doesn’t work. All these mega rich people care about is making record profits each and every year, even if it means cutting corners on a 4.5 billion dollar franchise like Star Wars. A couple nitpicks: 1. The Anakin/Obi-Wan fight made no sense with real lightsabers. What was Anakin going to do once Obi-Wan was disarmed? Actually hit him with the lightsaber? It would have been a simple thing to at least suggest they were using training sabers so I could believe it was more than a fancy dance routine. 2. I absolutely loved how well the actress played the role of Leia. She was the perfect mix of entitled brat, and wise with people's emotions (hinting at her force ability). But she was supposed to be a ten year old! And I know the actress is actually ten years old (I had to check to make sure), but she looks like she's six! It was incredibly off-putting.

I am 50 y/o. I saw A New Hope in the theater. A kindergartener's mind blown. Cannot say I have read much, or seen many of the cartoons. But these past 3 new series - the Mandalorian, BoBF, and Obi-Wan; they all touch this nostalgic place inside me. They all give me great joy. As for the cgi and what-not in Obi-Wan yes in places a little cheesy. But then I also think about the old classic spaghetti westerns and 70s hong kong kingfu flicks that the whole star-wars universe is rooted in - they were sometimes cheesy too. All your points about the show are all solid critique, I personally loved it, though. It is your last bit, the ugly, that decided to respond - thank you. Your position is well stated and well thought out. And it is also something that my wife and I both have noticed - culture war toxicity. I do not understand it, at all. It hurts my heart to look around and see differences of opinion tear friends and family apart. So I for one really appreciate you taking the time to address this elephant in the room. I hope that your subscribers hear that message and spread it like fire. Yeah, cannibalize em. I liked that 🤘🤘🤘

While I respectfully disagree with your opinion that the show isn't great, I do fully support your feeling and statements in "The Ugly" portion of the video. It really has gotten completely ridiculous, and I really believe that most of us don't hold the toxic opinions of the small but vocal minority. It's one thing to criticize an actor or their character, but skin color makes no difference at all. And I agree, it's not a problem in the Star Wars galaxy. Most of us will enjoy Star Wars regardless of who plays what character, and while we may disagree about what is good or bad (I for one really love The Last Jedi), I think that we can all agree that the backlash for the actress was far too harsh and undeserving.

Overall, I enjoyed it - certainly more than The Book of Boba Fett. Some things bugged me more than others (all of the Leia foot chase scenes for instance). The CGI could have been better, but Vader force pulling the ship then ripping it apart was pretty bad-ass. Reva the character wasn't great. Owen and Beru showed us some great moments fending her off. And why do people with lightsabers just stabby stab. If you are going to stab, you should follow it up with a quick flick of wrist upwards. Ok Disney wouldn't show that and it could be canon breaking, but seriously the lethality of lightsabers goes from one end of the spectrum to another at the whim of the screenwriter. Bail Organa is always a treat. To me it didn't feel like the "well produced fanfic" that the other Star Wars series come off as. To me it actually felt close to an actual Star Wars epic.

Logic was thrown out of the window with this series, things just appearing for the sake of driving the plot forward or good ideas but just not executed well. It’s like all of a sudden you can get get stabbed in the chest with a light sabre and survive ? Reevah had it done twice. How to fix Kenobi series by a lot: - Reva: Explain her story a bit earlier and also how in smokes she was barely limping on tatooine (Example: Medic droid she programmed to be loyal to her? I mean she know's something about droids considering what she did to Lola) - Fix the non-lightsaber fight scenes to be reasonably realistic - Focus more on the Vader - Obi-Wan relationship

@@PalpatinesPlumber No, you don't even need Reva, or any of the Inquisitors for that matter. Leia is unneeded as well. The Lightsaber fight scenes were terrible too, and didn't need to happen. It should have been an in depth character study of Obi-Wan and Vader, them never meeting, and showing flashbacks of them, and showing what they were doing in the moment. Empire stuff for Vader, and TRAINING and WATCHING LUKE for Obi-Wan.

"get to know them first, hate em for some of that shit" this doesn't work, especially if you are a white guy. Any criticism can be deflected towards racism or sexism. You think I wasn't lumped in with racists and sexists when I pointed out that 'Moses Ingram' shouldn't have said that Kenobi was the start of representation in the franchise? You think it mattered that I praised how well Vivien did as Leia after stating her run scenes were really bad, nope, just meant I was a sexist. You think I wasn't labeled a sexist and racist and was differentiated from the mob after I negatively critiqued the 'character' Rose Tico in the sequel trilogy after Kelly Tran was attacked? Ists, isms, and phobes exist in the fanbase and society, I am not saying they don't, but if you think this crap isn't constantly and consistently used as a shield by not just corporations but a simple privilege of being one of these minorities from legitimate criticisms, especially from non minorities, then you haven't been paying attention to society as of late.

Peaky Blinders is the best series I’ve seen in a long time. Just binge watched it on Netflix. The guy that wrote it was outstanding at keeping the story complex but orderly, understandable and interesting. Subtle looks or gestures from characters pay off 2 or 3 seasons later. It’s remarkable what can be done with a little planning and vision

This is why I love you guys. Well-crafted, well-structured opinion right down the middle. Of course your opinions match my own, so it sounds a whole lot better to me. I do think that's one of the biggest issues is Earth's issues/America's culture war is seeping into the Star Wars universe. And it needs to stop. Star Wars is one of the few major franchises that truly "has a life of its own" and is truly its own universe. Writers/directors: Stick to that universe. Star Wars is an escape from our current problems. Lord knows politicians aren't going to be the ones to bring us together, so let this universe be a unifying FORCE(see what I did there?).

The original trilogy is literally a metaphor for the Viet Cong fighting against the US during the Vietnam War. Star Wars has always been political right at the very start

@@KaminoKatie Ok, and...? So that means it should continue to be so all the way through huh? Ok ok. Even though that may be the case, it wasn't on-the-nose. There were parallels, yes, but it wasn't blatant. That's how it should be. Parallels to the current situation, but not blatant and in-your-face. The sequel trilogy and Solo have been much more on-the-nose with the culture war stuff, and primarily in one direction. And THAT'S what I feel needs to stop. Star Wars, mostly, has evolved past the issues we have here. There's certainly still versions of it(xenophobia, slavery), but it's part of the story and gets resolved.

@@KaminoKatie I honestly agree with you both to a point. Star Wars (just like a lot of other media and art) provides social and political commentary. But this was never the problem in the first place The Problem is that nowdays it is really poorly executed to the point were it is no longer a good story with some political commentary but just a means to push a political and social agenda. Without a coherent, interesting and genuenly good story the political stuff just stands out and gets really annoying fast. People want an escape from reality in the first place, a bit of subtile political stuff comes second and most people dont mind it. Like i said, it should be a great story with some commentary not just the commentary with a bit of bad story serving it.

@@enderlionheart4497 @Frederick Probst War is inherently political by default no matter what. If anything, the Sequel trilogy is the LEAST political of the three trilogies even if it has some Neo Nazi allegories with The First Order glorifying the past and The New Republic refusing to acknowledge the growing threat until it was too late. And no, the culture war is made up by alt-right Neo Nazi folk who wanted society to go back to the 1950's and that woman, POC, and other minority groups are not political, they're just people

I agree with most of your assessments, as your analysis is very logical, intelligence and well composed. I, however, disdain the fact that Kathleen Kennedy still has way too much chokehold on Star Wars, and most of the failures from the series on directing, writing and certainly inserted characters were TOO distracting. The show felt rushed, crammed and the best parts were Ewan and Hayden. Leia was a surprise, and so was Owen, they performed well and in line with their characters. On Reva however, I found her character irrelevant, over acted, and unnecessary...the arc served no real purpose, and Darth would have put her to death. KK deleted many relevant scenes Ewan wanted for Obi Wan and Darth. I have no issue with newer characters, it's just when they dominate a series as much as what we were promised, that "bait and switch" is unproductive.

I think that this was an attempt to bring a good idea to a larger audience. It's a fantastic way to showcase Anakin/Vader as one person, and IMO was better done than in Rebels. Was it repetitive? Yeah, if you've seen both. I think that most people have not, and I see it more as bookends to the final event rather than simple repetition. I also thought it was cool that both Ahsoka and Kenobi were able to remove (a different) half of the mask, but it wasn't until his redemption through Luke's unshakeable faith that the mask was able to come completely off.

I respect this video much more for waiting until the entire series is finished to pass judgement. In regards to the series, I have to agree. Lots of cool stuff, let down by some pretty average writing and weak action direction (I'd say the writing let down the Battle of Jabim more than the direction did - one scene was literally contradicted by the next, repeatedly). I'd also agree that this was an average to below-average series overall which only really got into its stride at the very end. I'd say it was better than Book of Boba Fett which didn't ever get into its stride and the end was just ridiculous.

I have really struggled with the “Disney-fucation” of Star Wars So I made a rule to only watch Star Wars with my 11 year old kid… In that setting they all hold up. I get what you are doing here. but at the end of the day seeing Star Wars from his perspective has really help me to just enjoy the shows for what they are… space wizards/cowboys/with lightsabers. I highly recommend reverting back to the “little kid within” and giving it a second watch. It would have been better with Wookiees… but that’s any Star Wars show without Wookiees..

The worst part is just how cheap the show feels. From the costumes, CGI, and camera work etc. The Mandalorian looks worthy of the cinema while Kenobi looks like a damn fan film and even passionate fans could do better. And that's what this needed, passionate fans since a Kenobi writer even admitted that they had never seen Revenge of the Sith.

One of my favourite examples of how cheap this show looks and how bad the production must be is from episode 5 when our inquisitor has Obi on his knees in the sand. Supposed to be a “moving and striking scene” but literally the only thing I could notice was the bouncing/shaking of the camera… I’m guessing they couldn’t even afford a tripod

I agree with you mostly. I was surprised you didn´t mention Vivian Lyra Blair´s performance, I think she did pretty well all things considered. Which kind of sums up the series at large for me. The acting, the portrayal of character was very good for all important characters in my opinion, but they were let down hard by the directing. The whole thing felt like they took good actors and dumped them into a skript written over two days without sleep, over which someone read for half an hour and then greenlit the whole thing. Like, the basic story was there but it is rather easy to poke holes into many scenes, the action scenes specifically as you mentioned - an ISD should and would shred a puny transport like that without any problems or just pull into into it´s hangar like it does with the Tantive IV if Vader want´s to do the job himself. Makes you think Thrawn is hailed a genius just for actually using the tools at his disposal sometimes. I know, like you said, Star Wars isn´t about tactics but there is only so much I can handwave. Like, doesn´t it bother whoever writes the Skript to have so many holes in their logic, in their story? Anyway, it was very nice to understand what bugged me about the space/spaceship scenes and especially in comparison to the gorgeus scene from the Mandalorian you compared it to - yeah, it was defenetly one of the weakest points of this series. Thanks for taking a quick dive into the technology behind it, very interesting. Besides that, I wholly agree with you on the stupidity of this whole culture war going on. I´m german and holy shit, it feels like if our politicians and political right wing would spew half the shit yours does people would be on the lookout for funny mustached men talking about the surperiority of the neckbearded race. Like, I´m legitimatly afraid for you guys and by proxy the rest of the world sometimes, because from the outside it looks like half your country would cry Heil Hitler if he was proclaiming himself an american patriot, defending guns from the marxists and protecting the innocent white people from becoming a minority in their own country. Back on track - racism is a major problem in universe too, what with the empire being so human centric and people don´t get it that racism is bad. It boggles my mind. So, rant end. To summarize I´d say if I got myself Disney + just for the show I´d be somewhat disappointed. It was cool to have new Star Wars content, but I didn´t feel any sort of hype. Sadly that works for Disney as a business model and I kind of ask myself about how Mandalorian could be created under the same figurative umbrella. I hope the the other legacy character stories turn out better, but at this point that feels like a coin toss.

It may appear that way from the outside to you. It's not. Do we have our fair share of morons? Of course, who doesn't. If you seriously think half the country would scream Heil Hitler if he claimed to be a "patriot" then you're seriously misinformed.

I respectfully disagree and agree with various points made. But I will say one thing on the point I’m most passionate on. It’s tiring being a black SW fan. It’s like every single time there’s a character that’s not white it’s automatically called woke, especially when Reeva ended up being a pretty cool character. It’s alienating to know that at the end of the day you’re really not accepted in a fandom of something you love and everyone can access. And I think part of the problem is that it’s not just a few people, it’s a lot. Every time there’s one of those kinda comments it gets hundreds and thousands of likes. Adding something a day later: I always participate in the community. On KZbin, FB, Twitter, Reddit, even Instagram. And while it’s worse in some of those than others, its everywhere. It’s sad, and I know no one cares. But I think it might be time for me to retire from being in the community as a whole and just consume SW material alone.

Even things like minecraft of all things has been invaded by this culture war bs
