3 жыл бұрын

Antoine and Naude from Ocean Conservation Namibia (www.ocnamibia.org) started their morning with a bang! In the first group of Cape Fur Seals they were patrolling they came across a large male seal with a some thick fishing line trailing behind them. This male was the biggest one they have encountered in quite a while, and even though they could see a mark around his neck, the line was so tight that it pulled right into the skin and wasn't visible anymore.
They like to start their day with a few smaller "warm up" seals, but duty called and they had to attend. Naude managed to get him into the net, but he came in at a forward angle which meant they could access the zipper without rolling the seal onto his side. This task proved harder than it looked!
Once the animal was in position Naude had to dig deep and pull hard to get access to the lines to cut them. The lines looked brand new, and the entanglement was very fresh, so there was no cut let on the seal, luckily. The relief of the animal with each line cut was obvious, and also meant that he regained strength and tried to throw them off a few times. Soon as the last line was loose they reversed him out of the net and he ran off to the safety of the ocean. 🦭

Even tho we don’t speak the same language please know that when we struggle with you, sometimes accidentally bite you and grumble it’s because you have helped us and being free from the horrible string, plastic and nets makes us so happy we forget our manners. I am really happy to support these folks doing remarkable work. I know the money goes directly to the people doing the work. I can’t be there to help, but a donation to support it is simple and critical
