Antoine and Naude from Ocean Conservation Namibia (www.ocnamibia.org) set out to catch a large male seal that they had seen the day before already. He was big and surprisingly fast, and because the beach was crowded with large seals, managed to beat them to the water and escaped.
Immediately after the escape Naude saw a young pup a few meters away with gill net around his neck. He ran up to it and caught it in the net. At the same time Antoine spotted another pup with a deep cut but not visible entanglement, and went to check him out. Naude quickly finished his rescue and ran to help Antoine. The second pup had a very deep cut across his back, and trailed only a small piece of fishing line. The cut the line, but there were a few areas where the skin had already grown over the line. Once the line was cut, they could not pull it out, and soon saw that there was a small rusted fishing hook protruding from the wound on the seals back. The carefully pulled the line out from the hook side and managed to get the whole entanglement off. The pup was clearly happy to be free of his burden, and ran happily back to the ocean. 🦭
