Seal "Frida" was OCN's first international rescue mission! We heard about this entangled Cape Fur Seal from Paul, a concerned Cape Town resident. He had seen Frida several times in Hout Bay, she seemed to have a piece of blue plastic string around her neck.
In Cape Town, most seal rescues can be done with a long pole and a hook. Seals are well habituated and local rescuers can get close enough to use their rescue hook. But Frida wasn't having it, she clearly had trust issues! She would not allow anybody near her to save her from suffocating.
The OCN rescuers are used to the cold shoulder treatment - Namibian seals never allow us close enough to use the hook, and we are used to improvising a lot, and we have our unique seal rescue net! We connected with local seal rescue activists from Cape Town and asked for permission to try our luck, and a few days later, we jumped on a plane and started searching for Frida. We could not believe our luck when we actually found her on day 2 of our Cape Town mission. We did what we do best and we rescued her not only from one, but from TWO entanglements!
The rescue was very different to Pelican Point, the terrain is different and we are used to a lot more space. It was a huge success for us, and we are grateful that we received such a warm welcome from the Hout Bay Seal Rescue Center. 🦭

I never realized sand was such an aid in seal immobilization. I guess there is more friction, as well as the ability to dig in. Who knew the conditions in Namibia are perfect for seal rescue! Great job, guys, many thanks to you and your helpers!🦭✂️👍🙏😊💙
@WhatAboutTheBee
@WhatAboutTheBee 2 жыл бұрын
I expect its the opposite Linda. When the seal is on sand, and tries to push, the sand gives way. Thus the seal cannot throw someone off. On concrete, the force the seal applies to the concrete meets a non-forgiving surface, which pushes the seal up. Just my two cents.

@@WhatAboutTheBee I think it has more to do with the size of the seal, since the bigger ones can throw off a rescuer in sand as well. Plus, if Wally and/or Denzil had been there, it would be a moot point. But it's interesting to think about.

I really like the insight in the fact that she's hard to control due to the concrete compared to the usual sand. Far harder to exert force without hurting her, while at the same time she gets a solid surface to exert as much force as she can directly at you by struggling. I'm sure you've caught and released feistier ones but on sand which felt more controllable.

I absolutely loved the video of "Frida". I've been to many rodeos and cattle drives, but I've never seen such courage in wrangling animals. You guys are great!

Feisty Frida! That rescue was a one of the hardest I’ve seen. Maybe because her flippers could push harder on the concrete than on sand…? You heroes never cease to amaze me!

Wow! That was intense guys! So good to see she had so much strength left despite 2 awful entanglements, and I honestly thought she was going to unseat Tony a few times lol. Your determination to help these poor pups that other humans have hurt is a bright light in an otherwise grey world. Love OCN guys, keep safe 💜🇬🇧💜
