Seal Rescues: WHY and HOW

Ocean Conservation Namibia

4 жыл бұрын

A little bit more background to Antoine's and Naude's efforts to free seals in Namibia from Ocean rubbish and plastic pollution: see how they spot the animals, how they identify the ones they can get to, and eventually the rescue.
Ocean Conservation Namibia has rescued over 200 seals this year alone. Most of our seals are caught in discarded fishing gear that the seals pick up from the ocean. Without intervention, they would find a horrible and slow end because of suffocation and starvation.
We have made it our mission to catch and release as many animals as possible. 🦭

I hate it that you guys are so hard on yourselves when you miss a few. You guys will get them I have no doubt!! Y’all helped 5 seals that is reason for celebration. And one(who really needed your help) was not even on the radar until you missed another you were actually going for. I say it worked out perfectly. Thank you for doing this work. It’s sad and very eye opening how you can go back every day and find more and more with garbage wrapped around their necks! Will humans ever learn???

Mike Jensen I would argue that in some areas it was heaven until very recently when Europeans and Americans took over. The Hawaiians Islands for example. The people lived in harmony with nature and revered and respected nature. They lived in abundance because they did respect nature and viewed themsleves as stewards and not owners of the land and sea. On the outer islands (that have not been developed) they still fight very hard to keep out developers. Some islands have laws that forbid the development of buildings over 3 stories.

Great job guys. A little hint: bring along a towel to cover the seal eyes, that way it will be less anxious and will move less making your job easier and prevent hurting itself.

Yes me too! Somehow I felt I wanted to experience a wider picture of their operations and this video has done exactly that, thank you so much! It’s not something that’s needed all the time, don’t want you to feel that other videos are lacking, they are not at all! I just want you to know I really appreciate the extra time and effort put into this one especially and just want to applaud you on your efforts not only in what you do for the seals but the additional time/energy/money for filming equipment you sacrifice in sharing with us and raising awareness. All your efforts are valued by us... ... and the seals of course!! God bless, Danni (North Wales)

Thank you so much for working so hard to save these seals. They are so precious. It's so wonderful to watch them get freed. Also, thank you for sharing your work with us during this stressful and terrible time in the world. You have greatly impacted many people. You uplift us, inspire us, and bring so much happiness and positivity to so many people. The world is a better place because of you and your family and team. I hope many people will contribute to help your organization and I'm sure the world is already becoming more aware of the importance of disposing of waste properly because of your videos and efforts. Thank you, again, so much and God bless you!!!😊😊😊😊😊
