You are required to maneuver straight down this trench and skim the surface to this point. The target area is only two meters wide. It's a small thermal exhaust port, right below the main port. The shaft leads directly to the reactor system. A precise hit will start a chain reaction which should destroy the station. Only a precise hit will set off a chain reaction. TRIVIA NOTE: The computer screen at the beginning of the scene actually shows this, but no, the three casinos in question are NOT all in the same block, as claimed by Danny here. As seen on the screen, while the Bellagio and MGM Grand ARE right near each other, the Mirage is another casino away from the Bellagio. So, it's a little hard to believe that Benedict's vault has the money of the Mirage in it.

There's about 260 billion dollars worth of gold (currently) at Fort Knox. A nuke silo (I assume you're referring to those?) house nuclear munitions that are, contrary to movies, never affixed to the missiles themselves until launch orders are received. It takes about an hour to get a warhead fitted out of storage WITH clearance and a single nuke can effectively level a capital city. That said, Fort Knox has much better security as gold can be moved and sold almost anywhere, and a warhead requires far more specialized personnel to use. The security to protect munitions of that kind are mostly off-site in the form of counter-intelligence identifying threats long before they even attempt an actual robbery. In terms of raw manpower and secure holdings, Kentucky has much more than a remote launch facility.
