Today I am trying a new finish for me. That is Odie's super duper dark oil. I have used Odie's original many times and love it but was curious about the dark oil as is suppose to give walnut dark rich tones and bring out the grain in light woods like hard maple #woodworking #woodworkingprojects #woodenbox

I took a turning course several years ago, and used the Odies as a finish. I loved it. The box desperately needs to have another coat, as it looks dry now. Really do like the product

Follow the directions and nothing beats it. I have all their products and absolutely love it. A bit more work than others but so worth it. I’ve compared it to Rubio and Odies looks so much better in m opinion. Love the dark line

I prefer oils too. I have used tung oil but I like Odies too. I have never used the dark but I sure like the way your box turned out.

I liked the way that the walnut end grain of the joints became very dark which adds a third color to the box. Nice.

With Odie's Oil "oil finish" doesn't really mean non-glossy though. A lot of the reason these other hardwax oils seem to have a fixed sheen or very specific unchanging look is because chemically they are still just topcoat polyurethane. That's why they all tell you not to go beyond 120 or 220 sanding, because the topcoat needs a scratch pattern to bond to. Any finish with a part two hardener is poly. The part 2 is isocyanate, and the part 1 is a mix of solvents and drying oils. Those drying oils might be "natural", but nothing else in either can is (IE: isocyanate and the solvents they use cause cancer as do many of their other additives). As soon as you mix the part two in, the isocyanate begins bonding with the drying oil and it becomes a polyurethane. With Odie's however there is no part 2, isocyanate, solvent, or any nasty components at all. As a result we are a true, naturally hardening, oil finish that is far more resilient than any polyurethane. With Odies you can sand as high as you want. The sheen is all in the finish prep. We aren't sheen in a can, but we most certainly do have sheen. If you know how to sand well you can even achieve a higher gloss than the sheen in a can finishes. Check our Instagram, there's quite a few high sheen pieces featured there. That being said, sometimes a simple low gloss sort of "natural" finish is nice though. I definitely see the appeal and am glad you're able to get the look you want easily and safely with our product. P.S. Sorry if this is a lot of information seeming coming out of nowhere, but the misconception that Oil finishes can't build sheen is a common one that our business has been fighting for a long time now.

Do you ever work with flipping furniture? I've been playing around with it lately. Things like older cedar chest, tables, stools. I still like those oil based stains and finishes too. I learned finishing with spray lacquers. They are still my first choice for nice pieces 👍

Hi Ken, I only flipped two pieces of furniture before I got into the woodworking and they were both painted. I do like to spray my paint but for finishing wood (not painted) I usually go to Rubio monocoat. Is easy to apply and very durable, I have it on my wood floors and its really holding up good and really easy to touch up

Very nice box it turned out great! I restore antique furniture, so I mostly use shellac or waterlox tung oil and then sometimes lacquer for later period pieces. It's nice to see how Odies looks!

I have to be honest with you. After the piece dried, I didn’t like it so much. The odie original is good but this one not so much. My favorite finish is in this order: Rubio monocoat, Osmo and odie original

@@woodworkingwithSkyler I love it and that's my go to when I need to use oil. It takes a while to dry thou, so patience is required. I just used it on 18th century drawer fronts that has African mahogany veneer and after three coats the depth was amazing. I used the sealer, and when it cures the sheen is around close a matte finish. Or I can apply a semi-gloss or satin waterlox over the sealer. You can do a lot with it.

I was very interested in your applicator; but after seeing the results I'll stick with my cotton rags (I get a back of scraps, cut offs from something in manufacturing). Applies a thinner coat, less to rub off (less waste prehaps?). I used to be a huge oil fan but some projects have pushed me to gel type rub in poly. And for others I've been using spay lacquer - easy to patch, looks really good. Shellac is another finish I play with but it can be fussy in application - I'm still on the learning curve. Saved my bum on one project where I had to color match a very old barber cabinet setup.

The applicator is just a non abrasive cleaning pad. Nothing special but it doesn’t absorb much product that’s why I use it

Good finish but I don't know about "Super Duper" Dark. Maybe put some "original" on a piece of walnut/maple and see if there is much difference! !! !!!

the "super duper" is a line of products. It's not proclaiming to be super dark. The "super duper" part is modifying "oil". If you want a super duper dark finish as you're describing it, you should buy some of our black pigment and mix it into your oil. You can make anything from a high gloss opaque black to a mild stain or even a paint with that. The super duper line of products were originally called "super duper danish oil", but we dropped the "danish" for whatever reason. The dark line of products (an idea original to Odies) is meant to slowly darken with time giving the wood a nice tanned patina. Our "super duper dark" then is essentially a danish oil designed to darken with age. I hope that clears things up for you, lol. I can see how someone new might be confused by the naming. happy finishing! P.S. if you're going for a stain, the various brown pigments are also nice for darkening the wood. I saw someone do a really nice stain on an elm dresser with our espresso pigment. That color looked really nice with that grain pattern for whatever reason.

Hi Skyler! Amazing as usual! Your laser cutter boxes have turned out beautifully and the Odie's oils you are using really accentuate the wood. Unfortunately, being in Canada, Amazon is charging $152 CAD for the jar you are using whereas Amazon US is about $40 USD... so I may have to wait before purchasing :( Anyways, I am in the midst of building a 44 x 82 inch folding workbench in my garage right now and am using a stain/polyurethane (golden oak) to harden and stain the table top and trim. So again, your videos are apropos to what I have going on as well :) I also think you should definitely post the video of you making your daughter's bed. That would be great! The super duper is meant to be more in the style of a danish oil. It's useful for certain things, but the Odie's Universal oil is the way to go for most projects, especially if you're new to Odies.

With most poly though you have to buy those as separate finishes. I'm sure there are some janky techniques people use to lower sheen by themselves as well though. The thing is, Odie's Oil can achieve any sheen or look you want. It's all in finish prep and technique. One bottle of Odie's Universal can achieve just about any style of finish you want. In conjunction with the rest of our product line the possibilities are truly endless.
