One of my favorite patterns. I have one coming up on the channel in a week or two. Thanks for sharing.

No knife collection could be complete without an Old English Rope Knife. I liked the quick look at that green bone Marbles one you have. I tend to think this is the original name of the pattern. The other names are shorter nicknames for the knife. It makes sense that this knife was popular. Sailors, Sail and rope riggers, ships carpenters and crew members likely used them too. I figure that immigrants headed to America learned how useful they were. This spread them thru Western America with various immigrants from different countries. Cowboys and Farmers used them as well. This added more nicknames to the same knife. Vest Pocket Axe is another name for the knife I believe. Marlin Spike knives are also known as Riggers knives. If you worked with rope, canvas and leather you can see why they were popular and useful. People bought them because they needed them; collecting knives was not a hobby they enjoyed. I have to smile when looking a GEC #46 Whaler or #45 Lumberjack and wonder if any ever cut a single piece of hemp rope. They are certainly the best made folding knives and also the least use folding knife ever made.

Wonderful. I enjoyed all the information. Bought a rough rider last night (elephant toe). Don’t have any. Rough rider makes a little flipper that’s green that looks like one.

I just picked up a MARBLES mr581 sunfish in white smooth bone. I love it, the size, it's comfortable in the hand, fits well in the pocket, and the strong pull ( mine feels like an 8)! And sir, I envy your sunfish pattern knife collection! Thanks for the show!

I learned about the elephant toenail from an older customer at the steak n shake I used to work at. We’d talk about knives on occasion because he heard I collected them. He brought in the elephant toenail one day and I loved the chunky thing. I looked for them online and discovered Rough Ryder and your reviews. I now have too many blades on my wish list.

Very helpful video Tobias. Based on this and your video on the history of this pattern, I ordered a RR sleeveboard (like this shape the best) elephant toenail in white smooth bone from SMKW. I'll try your tea dyeing method from another of your videos to change the handle color. One thing that convinced me to get one was the name vest pocket hatchet from your video, and that it was used by carpenters. So, I picked the knife that had no swedge for a thicker blade to the tip for hard use in woodwork. It also had very little RR marking, i.e., especially no big R. Thank you for your informative and interesting videos.

If you add a whistle, the whistle could be built into the knife scale.

I disagree that they are too big. I’ve been carrying the Rough Ryder Reserve Hippo Toe as my EDC, and it surprisingly fits in my fifth pocket.
@KnifeChatswithTobias2 жыл бұрын
It probably fill that fifth pocket but the flat body probably makes it feel just fine! I stand corrected!
@timrodriguez12 жыл бұрын
@@KnifeChatswithTobias you are correct, the flat body makes it much less noticeable in the pocket than another comparable size knife.

I managed to get all five of the Trixie and Milo knives but it took awhile and a lot of research. The prices for USA and German examples are nuts. The cheapest USA made sunfish is Winchester at about 150. The Bulldogs start at about 250 and go up fast. GEC knives go for about 400 and up. Case models are almost impossible to find and extra impossible to buy. The sky is the limit. Great video.

You are so right. I don’t know how anybody in Europe can afford to collect knives. The prices here in the USA are bad enough.

i bought my first one at the flea market for 5 bucks, it is an orange sunburst bone baby sunfish from rough rider and when i picked it up to open it i closed my hand around it and it sort of melted into my hand as if it belonged, so i bought it and put it in my pocket blades unseen and it was a little heavy but i soon forgot about it because again it just sort of melted into my pocket, i think these knives are the perfect shape, the baby's are anyway, that was back in july of this year, since then i have found 2 more baby sunfish from frost and a larger sunfish from frost then i bought the black and blue sunfish from rough rider and the blue mule both from amazon and i plan on buying a lot more of these baby's. i don't think i'll be buying one of the trixie and milo knives, i asked on amazon if they made a normal with two knife blades and they said no

Thank you Tobias for showing great versions of on of my favourite pattern. The humble Sunfish or maybe it's the mighty elephant toenail. There aren't a lot available over here and that really is annoying to me, but what can you do? Oh that was a very funny racoon story btw. I would have backed out too. Thank you again for your thoughts and visions on this fabulous knife pattern and have a very nice week.

I like the idea for non-blade items like a whistle, plus the flipper. That tie-dyed flipper is interesting. After I saw the one with the cap-lifter, I questioned why I was collecting swiss knives when these traditionals are more interesting, at least when comparing the SAK common red scales vs bolster/scale combinations. Thanks Tobias!

I work in nuisance wildlife control, we catch alot of " trash pandas" and the biggest one I've caught had to weight 35-40lb. I remember carrying his trap off the roof close to the soffit he was going through.

A great video of my favorite pattern! Do you think that the RR Trash Panda will ever be highly sought after, seeing as they made so few of them? I managed to get one, but mine arrived heavily oil stained and with scratched bolsters from poor shipping protection. I didn't dare return it because I knew that they would be gone.

I know this is an older video but I'm curious about something. In background, I see what looks like the sunfish knife put out there by RW Mitchell, with an abalone stripe and fish shield on the handle. One thing I've noticed is that knife has the same blade etching as Frost's sunfish knives with 1 of 500 art on them. The only difference between RW Mitchell and Frost is some slight alterations to the art of the sunfish itself. To my knowledge, RW Mitchell is not tied to Frost in anyway, so I found it interesting they used an almost identical blade etching. Also of interest - apparently knock offs of RW Mitchells pop up on eBay from time to time. They ship from Saudi Arabia and look identical to the real deal, except with a noticeably lower quality blade etching and darker handle. The knife world is a fascinating place sometimes.

Sunfish Is my agricultural knife of choice. It's thin. I like the equal end One more than the tapered One, i could live with a sheepsfoot or wharncliffe But the small pen Blade, razor Sharp Is a must for me. Probably many other knives can do the same work, anyway as silly as It sounds it has a non threatening look. here in Italy there Is the "justified Carry" law that Is enforced by the Policemen, maybe they would be more inclined to see a Classic looking knife as a justifiable tool more than a tactical knife.

Aw, I love this pattern. Not the most practical, but really appealing. I’ve only got a few. I’d have more if eBay sellers would come down on the crazy inflated prices. I’d love a single-blader with a bail - that’d be lighter and great to carry. Or a slightly more slender one. Come on, SMKW, more sunfish/toenails!
@rickkerans84853 жыл бұрын
They are interesting looking knives. Not sure I know the difference between a Sunfish and an Elephant Toenail unless it depends on what is on the blade. For a knife you don't carry you do have quite a few of them.
