42 here. Been watching since 85. First match I ever saw was in WWF. The Missing Link managed by Bobby Heenan whipped some jobber. A few months later I found AWA and then NWA. As a kid in the late 80s I watched everything I could find. WWF on Monday, Saturday, and Sunday. NWA Saturday and Sunday. UWF/Mid South Saturdays. AWA or World Class Monday through Friday. Even found the Maritimes and ICW a few times. Then everything I rented on VHS. Stayed loyal to WWF during the Monday Night Wars. Eventually in the mid 2000's I found ROH. When AEW was announced, as an old fan, I was genuinely excited. By the third show, they lost me. That show had a main event of Jericho vs Darby Allin for the AEW title in a Philly Street Fight. Ok a street fight is like a fall count anywhere, hardcore, no dq. Same rule is anything goes. So as the match gets going I hear JR say the ref will be enforcing the 5 count on the ropes. Hold up a minute. This is a street fight. There's no DQ. What the hell is the ref gonna do if a guy doesn't break the ropes on 5??? That was enough. I've tried to tune in here and there to AEW and I just can't get into it. I can watch NXT, but that's all I can watch from WWE. I was enjoying Corgan's NWA before covid hit. But when it comes to AEW, it's the fanbase I can't deal with. I have never encountered a bigger group of snobs in my life that flat out refuse to call AEW out when they shit the bed. Just sidekicks to a sidekick in an diluted faction. And they aren't over in the States either. Omega got over because of the booking. As we've seen now, without a serious guiding hand, Omega is not what he was in Japan. Not even close. Dave has a personal and professional stake in this. So the guy that is a glorified mark talks about Jim, who's been successful in multiple promotions. That mark is telling Jim how to "book" a show. Holy shit.
@murdyrdoll4 жыл бұрын
What promotions has Jim been successful in? His own promotion, Smokey Mountain Wrestling, went out of business a matter of months after Rick Rubin (a multimillionaire music producer) stopped paying the bills. His booking run in WWF in 1996-early 1997 led to Nitro demolishing Raw in ratings and WWF nearly going out of business (the NWA revival angle that Jim booked in 1997 was particularly embarrassing). His booking run in ROH led to the company losing live gate attendance and DVD sales (their lifeblood at the time) and his run as TNA booker led to further declining ratings for an already struggling company. Jim has had the book for 4 major promotions, including promotions with billionaire backers, and has failed colossally every single time. Dude is 0-4. This isn't my opinion, but a recounting of history backed up by facts. Anyone with even a mild knowledge of pro wrestling history knows this. I'm not trying to insult you but what promotions, in your mind, has he been remotely successful in? I feel dumb for typing this out because you're not going listen and learn, because it doesn't fit your narrative, but if you are going to write comments about wrestling at least be slightly informed.

@@murdyrdoll I'm not an expert, but wasn't he good at Ohio Valley wrestling? Also Corny was the second greatest manager ever, which is a lot more than Meltzer is. I'm not saying that Corny is the greatest promoter ever, but he is a lot better than some & he is definitely greater than Meltzer who has no experience on running a show.
@murdyrdoll4 жыл бұрын
@@vanderful2397 OVW was a development promotion that ran at a huge loss and drew between 75-200 people a night, then Jim got fired from the job in 2005. I wouldn't call that remotely successful. Also Smokey Mountain was semi well liked in the early 90s (ironically, Meltzer put it over in his news letter) because WWF was doing voodoo curse angles and WCW had Robocop in angles, where Smokey Mountain presented rasslin' form the 70s. It wasn't well respected, just seen as more serious than the big 2. As soon as ECW, a truly innovative product, came along, Smokey Mountain was no longer interesting to anyone outside of the small live audiences they drew in the south (the promotion always ran at a loss). Finally, saying Cornette is better than Meltzer at something that Meltzer has never done is silly. Somebody who goes swimming and nearly drowns is still a better swimming than somebody that has never gone swimming.
@vanderful23974 жыл бұрын
@@murdyrdoll I think you are mostly right. However I don't think you can judge development territories really. OVW couldn't succeed financically, because everytime somebody was getting over they would get called to the big leagues & their hands were quite tied. I mean they couldn't have member of Aryan Brotherhood trying to lynch Shelton Benjamin, because WWE wouldn't like etc. I think their primary objective was just to prepare people for the big leagues & making money was extra. NXT is or at least was inprofitable too. I also remembered how Meltzer used to love SMW. Anyway like I said that was a bad time for wrestling, so I don't you can blame Corny for the fall of SMW. I think Corny's legacy as a boss should be calculated on his success in the ROH & WWE. Anyway I obviously can't say that he was successful in running those shows, however I still think he had a great mind for the business. I guess in many ways he is like Russo, he needs somebody above him, who has a clear vision & who is more diplomatic. Corny sounds like a guy who isn't that good with people who he doesn't respect & I don't think he is a good negotiator with tv people & sponsors. I seem to remember that he was very confused when Vince told him that "In this business you have to learn to eat like & try to like the taste of it" etc. If Corny would have been responsible for WWE's tag team division in early 2000s for example, I'm sure that would have been great. I also believe in him when he says that wrestling suffered greatly, because people used to hotshot the business in late 90s. For example the last brutal ECW matches were shit, because they had already done everything cool & now they only had stupid shit left (for example many of the New Jack's matches). I see the last years of ECW as huge black mark on Heyman's legacy. I think he is a capable boss & his opinions should have a lot of weight, because I don't really think there are much better bookers than him in the US anymore. If you want to see better bookers, you should watch Japanese or perhaps Mexican wrestling, but in the US he is a lot better than most who are still alive.
@murdyrdoll4 жыл бұрын
@@vanderful2397 First off, I appreciate having a civilized discussion about wrestling with somebody online that doesn't involve a bunch of insults. You seem like a good, reasonable dude. I still feel like you are giving Cornette credit that he does not deserve. I agree with you that OVW was not meant to be profitable, but if he was perceived as doing a good job then he wouldn't have been fired. Smokey Mountain ran at the same time as ECW, and ECW continued to grow (and shaped the direction of the big 2) while Smokey Mountain fizzled out because the booking was just re-hashed booking from the 70s. If Cornette's ideas were good, the promotion would have stayed in business and been profitable. But his ideas were uninteresting to most wrestling fans and the promotion went out of business as soon as his multi-millionaire backer stopped paying the bills. I will say that Cornette was a fantastic manager, a good promo and even a decent commentator (aside from his high pitched man-baby voice). That said, him in a booking capacity has cost those companies (that were foolish enough to put him in that role) money/ratings/sales/etc. without fail. He is a bad booker and his ideas about what draws in wrestling are flat out wrong. His track record has consistently proves this for 3 decades. Its not his lack of people skills that caused all of the companies he worked for to lose money/fans/ratings, but his antiquated boring ideas on what draws in wrestling. I agree that he would be an asset to company in teaching the young guys how to cut better promos, or as a manager, but not as a booker or even an idea person.
