People with Locs are OBSESSED with retwisting

It's not just with locs. There is an obsession with making all natural hair look "neat", sleek, baby hair, slick edges, etc. Some people want their natural hair to be "perfectly laid" like straight hair instead of embracing how free afro hair wants to be. I won't force my hair to be something it's not anymore. I have frizzy afro hair, not sleek straight/wavy/curly hair. I also agree that there is no "ugly stage".

Frizzy vibes are everything. I retwist every 3-5 months. I would stretch it out for longer, but I don't want my locs to fall off. The baby hairs, I'm not gonna lie, they be looking cute on the ladies sometimes, but the concept is ridiculous. It give puppet/I need to fit in vibes

I get mine crocheted so I don’t have that sleek look since my loctician doesn’t use products. It kills me how, even after getting it crocheted, people will ask when Im getting it done lolol. Like it is done, my roots are no longer marrying. 😂

Hi Winni. Your hair looks so much healthier. You are right about retwisting so often as it does thin your hair out. I have my locs over 20 years and I use to retwist every 4 weeks then noticed my hair was thinning, I was about to cut it all off but then decided not to. I had to stop and now I haven’t retwisted for almost 3 years. My locs looks a lot healthier although I do wrap my hair most of the time.

I'm 11 months into my 4th loc journey. I made the decision 4 months ago to go semi freeform as I realised I really wasn't a fan of the freshly retwisted scalpy look. I confess that I did retwist my locs once every 8 weeks on previous loc journeys, but that was because I thought that was what you were supposed to do (I hadn't done ANY research before). Having done a lot of research this time round and really paying attention to my hair type and how it grows, I decided that I will only retwist as and when/if the locs actually need it, which at the moment they don't. And personally I think my hair looks better because my locs are fuller and healthier (especially at the root) than if I was retwisting regularly. I do get why people enjoy going to the salon and getting a retwist; it is a fun pampering experience. However I agree that the negative language about the self that some people use is unnecessary. Whether left alone or freshly retwisted our hair is beautiful when in locs, and there is nothing wrong with being at either end of the spectrum.

For semi-freeformers, it seems that spritzing the roots and plaiting them, and taking the plaiting out when they are dry should clean up the roots and look neat without having to retwist. Also tying with a scarf can deal with frizz.

Hello Queen when I first started my journey my family used to asked me when would I get a re twist all the time now I also like the fuller look I’m doing semi freedom I re twist when my locs start marrying each other
