The author, Sir Terry Pratchett mentions ogham in his Discworld series via Nanny Ogg. Not the same as irl ogham but it’s interesting where he gets his inspirations from.

We find Ogham here in Scotland used by the Scots and Picts carved on some awe inspiring stones .The Gaelic alphabet links letters to trees and plants .Ogham is written from bottom to top with each letter scratched along the line .

Something which might interest you (and many viewers) is the book by Erynn Rowan Laurie, Ogam: Weaving Word Wisdom (Immanion/Megalithica, 2007), which I am recommending here not only because I wrote the preface to it, but because it is the best practical/divination book on ogam that utilizes the best available scholarship and interpretations, and doesn't over-romanticize and distort what is known of the Irish or "Celtic" matters generally the way most modern ogam books do. It also uses the briatharogam or "word-ogam" lists (there's three of them!) for the divinatory meanings of the letters rather than any inferred meanings from tree associations, and explains that there are many ogam lists in addition to the tree-list associated with the alphabet in Auraicept na nEces and other texts on ogam from the medieval period. So, well worth getting if you're able! Old Irish is very difficult to pronounce...if you'd like some tips on it for any future videos you might make, please feel free to ask me! ;)

I like the explanation that the letters are formed with the fingers on the shins, along with hand on hand. The letters are named after trees named with the letter defined. It could thus be used for silent conversations 🪨

Thank you.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I have used the Trees in alignment with the cycle of the year. There's two times that are assigned to be the beginning of the year. The modern one assigns the new year of the solstice. But I use the start of October 31st. And I switched two of the trees to fit more closely their season times. Tinne is Holly and thus [In my opinion] is appropriate to the time of Xmas.. Thank you for adding to my information..🙏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🗿 (hehe! I was going to use a potato.🥔 Till I found a stone head.🗿)

This video popped up on my feed right after I decided to return to my Ogham studies as a divination practice. I use cards containing the symbols of each Ogham and I read them interpreting the positive/negative aspect depending on the reading. They give a soothing and embracing feeling. Thank you so much for all of your hard work! ❤️

thanks for your well researched explanation on the subject! just a couple corrections, as the scholarship on this is super hard to parse: the tree calendar is what is entirely a modern invention from fiction. the tree lists are sourced directly from medieval documents, each slightly different bc different manuscripts have discrepancies. there is debate whether this was an invention from medieval manuscript tradition, but they are an undeniable historical fact. theres also color and saint, etc. associations. they are just not the original meanings, as each letter-name is inherently (originally) a Primitive Irish noun. some are trees like birch and oak, some things like fire and sulphur. there are poetic kennings in the manuscripts that allude to these meanings too, and esoteric meaning can be taken from them. irish mythology mentioning Ogham staves being used for divination is a main inspiration point both Erynn Rowan Laurie and Marissa Hegarty have written well-researched books on the use of Ogham for divination, specifically using the original noun-names, rather than just the tree associations. highly recommend both books!

The letters of Ogham are represented by archaic words for the trees whose names are not from the modern Gaelic diaspora... the names are from an older era of Gaelic that no longer exists.
@art-is-awen884214 күн бұрын
no, that's only true for one letter - Onn, which is a lost word for ash. none of the other non-tree related letters were originally trees, they have other meanings such as fear and sulphur and fire and iron. the tree associations are simply one of the many association lists from the manuscripts. there's the Tree Ogham, Colour Ogham, Saint Ogham, etc. they're a real part of the tradition but not at all what the words originally meant.

Erynn Rowan Laurie's book very explicitly disclaims the works of Robert Graves, not expands upon them. It operates primarily from the Auraicept na nEces Ogam Text as its main source. 🪦
