The Jedi follow the rule of two as well. It was one of the things you were supposed to catch when the Yoda told Qui-gon, “A Padawan, you already have.” Remember that it was at Qui-gon’s funeral at the end of the same film that you get the first mention of the Rule of Two in a film. It was a “blink and you miss it” moment, showing you how connected the Jedi and Sith truly are. If you pay attention, the scene with Yoda teaching the lightsaber to the younglings, he doesn’t call them padawans. Even Obi-wan calls them Younlings in Revenge of the Sith. The Knight & Padawan mirrors the Master & Apprentice structure of the Sith Lords, except that the Jedi padawan doesn’t become a Jedi Knight by killing his Master. This would have been something good for The Acolyte to touch on, had they hired a writer capable of actually writing.

This is what I wanted to see. The Acolyte could've literally been the start of the Rule of Two. Darth Bane, finding Darth Revan's holocron & discovering the Rule of Two. Start the show with Bane & Zannah. Each season is a new pairing. 10-12 episodes, (more if needed to flesh out the story), & the rise of the new acolytes. You do it that way, follow the Rule of Two from Bane all the way to Sidious & Vader, & you've literally got season after season of great content. AND, you can draw from Drew Karpyshyn 's novel as to how to set it up. Literally writes itself. And, you include the Darth Plagueis' novel, which includes stories about former Sith Lords before him, and you've got an amazing series. Hell, you could start it with Darth Sidious ordering Darth Vader to begin studying Sith Holocrons & the history, right after Episode 3. Vader can narrate it. Ugh, instead, we got hot garbage.

I loved the Bane trilogy. So much so that as a fanfiction writer myself with a focus on SW I started to write a direct follow on in a series I was calling "Legacy of the Sith". The first couple of stories were intended to be about Zannah and Cognus, exploring how the Jedi came to know about the Rule of Two and the formation of Darth Millennial's cult. Ultimately fell to the wayside when I started writing my own novel but the reviews were fair for the small amount I did write. Wouldn't mind finishing that one day. Maybe if Star Wars passes into competent hands one day we might get a faithful series adaptation of the Bane Trilogy.

I really liked the spirit of the Rule of Two in the books. I believe the first step into the Abyss for the Sith was when Palpatine killed his master in his sleep. He didn’t truly surpass him, like Zannah did-he cowardly stole the position instead. That laid the foundation for his downfall. The second reason for his failure was another break in the Rule of Two-hiding in the shadows. If a true Sith (like Zannah) had followed the Rule to the letter, he would’ve used a puppet in a position of power (like Biden) instead of taking a counselor position himself. No one would’ve been able to find the true Sith behind the curtain. By revealing himself, he also placed a target on his back for the Jedi.

I think Drew Karpyshyn left the end of the duel "open ended" so that if someone wanted to revive Bane in a new story or not, they could have. When i finished the novel years ago, i guess i wanted Bane to be transferred, but now, 20 something years later, I think he died....or else we would have heard from him by now....unless thats what he wants us to think 🤔

Love this video, Theory! Nothing better than some good old-fashioned Sith lore. Zannah is my favorite female Star Wars character ever, and your video showed so many reasons why she's incredible. I've been obsessed with Zannah since I read the Bane Trilogy many years ago. I was waiting and waiting for Disney to do something with this fantastic character because after all the force is female right? LOL. But of course they overlooked this ferociously smart female in favor The Acolyte twins, Bland and Blander. My favorite scene in the trilogy is when Bane forces Zannah, who is only a child, to go out in the wilderness and tame a wild neek, a timid little creature afraid of humans. With patience, she learns to earn its trust; she feeds it, and it slowly follows her home. Zannah's so proud to show her Master that she did just as he commanded, only to be shocked when he tells her to slaughter the animal and make a meal out of it. She hesitates, so he snaps its neck using the force. Then Zannah butchers it and puts in a stew for them to eat. Thus Zannah learns a Sith lesson she will never forget. It's through her will and smarts that she defeats Bane. And no, he did not complete the essence transfer and their final battle Bane's life force was trapped in an eternity of suffering, while Zannah became Master to her apprentice, Darth Cognus, the Iktotchi assassin once known as The Huntress. Please make more videos like this! You are the best! ❤

I think my favorite part is the scene where Bane shows Zannah the result of the Thought Bomb and she has to make one of many hard choices when her cousin confronts them. Funny thing, Bane once considered the Kraayt approach of One Sith. He swiftly discarded it. For one, he knew that a single Sith can still die from battle, disease, and other causes, which would mean the One Sith approach would lose everything. But more importantly, Bane realized that every Sith changes and even rusts over time. A Sith can be all powerful, but they can grow soft, their mind and judgment waning. A rusted sword must always be cast aside and replaced. Only the strongest may rule as Sith.

Imo, The Acolyte series should've been about Bane and Zannah all along. The first season about Bane dealing with other sith, and ending with him killing them. Season two would start with him encountering Zannah and the rest of the season would be about her journey. Season three then would be the series finale, with the last episode about their fight for supremacy, ending with that hand movement Zannah does, leaving things for speculation, like the original material did.

It was never meant to leave speculation or be ambiguous. Drew (the author) himself stated that he thought he made the ending clear that Zannah won the battle. He said when Cognus asked after the battle was over if it was Bane, the line (paraphrasing) "Bane is gone, I am Zannah, Dark Lord of the Sith." The twitch was just meant to be an imprint from the extreme stress and ferocity of the battle fought in her mind. It wasn't Bane himself.

@randomactsofanimation unfortunately, the consequences of losing the attempted essence transfer was worse than just death. Bane's "spirit" or mind is now trapped forever in some sort of void/neatherworld/hellish mindscape that he can never escape. Seems sort of sad for the originator of the Banite line, but it reinforces the idea behind the rule of two of a stronger apprentice with all their masters knowledge becoming the master and each subsequent apprentice building upon that. It's why a typical Sith apprentice is an easy match for a full Jedi Knight and even a Master by the time of Tenebrous forward. And while Bane's essence itself isn't within Zannah, the imprint of the hand twitch was left from the ferocity and intensity of the battle inside Zannah's mind.

I loved the video but disagreed with your comment of Sidious “bending” the rules by having multiple apprentices. Dooku and Maul, while amazing in their own ways, simply were not strong enough to become the new Master. Tenebris also simultaneously had Venemous and Plaguies, furthering the point. The "sad" part for Bane is the mind of the loser of a failed essence transfer is banished into the void for all eternity with no escape.

The piece of SW content I want the MOST is a true sequel to the Darth Bane trilogy. It ends with several unfinished plotlines, things that are complicated with lore in Darth Plaguies (Darth Cognus, Set Harth, Darth Andeddu's Holocron etc). Drew Karpyshyn has stated on twitter that he would like to continue, but "his hands are tied".

He mistakenly believed she was waiting, not knowing that she already was seeking out a potential apprentice and planning for the duel. And the author of the trilogy made it clear in interviews that the ending was never supposed to imply Bane won or be ambiguous. He said he thought he made it clear in his writing that Zannah won when she declared after the battle "I am Zannah, Dark Lord of the Sith" when Cognus asked if that was Bane.

Someone asked Drew Karpyshyn this exact thing at a panel once. He said he was confused how people could think Zannah hadn’t won. He said she had the twitch like Bane because of her embodiment of the dark side and how much she had to fight to keep his will from taking over her body.

Something Darth Bane never considered from the 'Rule Of Two' was aging/timing. The idea of the 'Rule Of Two' was so the Sith could always grow in STRENGTH with a master to embody the POWER and an apprentice to crave it. Bane expected Zannah to challenge him much earlier but she waited until his body grew weaker and aged from his overuse of the dark side. This frustrated Bane as it directly goes against his philosophy/training (that strength should have dominance over weakness) hence why he learned essence transfer as a precaution and why he sought out another apprentice in Darth Cognus. What Bane saw as a fault or weakness (in Strength & Power) from his apprentice, Zannah took it as an opportunity against her master (in Cunning & Deception) and even though she probably didn't fight Bane during his prime state (in Body & Fitness), it shows again why the Sith constantly grew in their Cunning/Deception abilities. You can see why they were able to stay undercover (for millennia) from the Jedi.

@DaleLambo I think you're mistaking the situation the same way "Bane" did. She wasn't waiting for him to get old and weak. First off, she couldn't ever challenge him until finding a way to rid him of the orbalisk "armor" infestation covering his body. And he needed her to find a way to get them off his body. She was also determined to learn every bit of knowledge from Bane she could before the challenge time of her choosing. When Bane thought she wasn't going to challenge him, he didn't know she was already strong her plan on motion. She defeated a Dark Jedi while going after Bane (Set Harth), who she made her apprentice. He ended up bailing on her when she went into the prison to confront the captured Bane who was being held there. For the final fight, she had to track him back down, and there is where she met Cognus, who pledged her loyalty to whoever was the winner. Yes, she was very cunning, but as the first apprentice of the Banite "Rule of Two" line, she was very much a believer in it and it's tenets. They both knew from the start of her training she could never win on physical strength. That's why he focused her Lightsaber training on speed and defense. And of course her mastery of Sith sorcery.

Kinda sad how Bane and Zannah worked so hard to beat the Jedi and make the Sith prevail, but the infighting quickly returned after their passing, it just wasnt on a large scale but just apprentices and masters trying to kill each other before they had learned everything from the master or vice versa, the master not wanting to die and hesitates to teach everything.

New to legends, liking the idea of Zana winning. Makes for more stories that way. New takes on old takes, then new takes on new takes, giving new ways to see old takes not yet shared, good stories add characters I think. When they need to though, can't be a trendy over the top thing, has to be balanced. Subtle. Also thinking how Palpatine only cared about Maul when he became competition in Clone Wars, makes me think the rule of two works for most Sith Lords. But like all rules, there are exceptions.

What makes Bane such an interesting Sith is how he approached Sith doctrine and teaching. He understood just how easy it would be to just dive into the dark side without any restraint and control only to end up going insane. He saw what the Sith had become and, rather than perpetuating the thousand-year failings the Sith code had embedded into the order, had the insight to say 'na there's a better way to do this', his teachership of Zannah was also unique in that he actually valued her growth and didn't just outright abuse her, something most Sith masters did to cultivate that anger and hate required of a Sith. The guy was PRINCIPLED, no Sith other than Revan had such insight which made them so powerful and influential.

I also love the theory that Bane successfully essence transferred down the Sith line culminating in Palpatine, but I doubt it because Palps did stuff way different regarding the rule of two. Bane passing into Zannah though? I can get behind that.

Even though I was rooting for Zannah during my read of the book, I was also kind of rooting for Bane trying to become immortal because that would be incredible for storytelling purposes. Great trilogy of books.

I think a part of Bane's essence was transferred, but Zannah was able to resist and ultimately retain her individuality. Her studies is Sith Sorcery helped with this a great deal IMO

I always wanted the sequel. Cognus foresight was an ability I would have loved to seen fleshed out. Bane speculated on if she could actually control the future from just her visions alone.

I still believe the ending to the Bane Trilogy hints that Bane took Zannah’s body. Zannah adopted the exact same body twitch that Bane had following their final battle. For me the perfect story is that Snoke = Plagueis = Bane.
