This song is a perfect example as to why the '80s were so connected by music. There were no barriers, there were no categories you HAD to fall into, there were no walls to hold you in. If you had the guts to do what you wanted, you were 100% free to do it.

Hucknall, born at Saint Mary's Hospital, Manchester, on 8 June 1960 was an only child. His mother abandoned the family when he was three; the upheaval caused by this event inspired him to write "Holding Back the Years", which would become one of Simply Red's biggest and best-known hits. He was brought up in Denton[7] by his father, Reginald (1935-2009) a barber in Stockport.According to Hucknall he had a happy childhood until the age of 10, when he began to clash with his father "because there was no woman to act as referee"

According to Wikipedia, the lead singer of Simply Red, Mick Hucknall, is of Irish ancestry from his mother, whose father was from County Offaly, Ireland; his father was from Manchester, England.

Soul comes from the heart, the gut, not the color of the skin. I'm sure you know the term 'blue-eyed soul.' Sure, it might be easy for a singer to really project an emotion or mood while going through hard times because they're feeling it at the moment. But to be able to pull that soul up months or years later, or night after night, that's the drive, the dedication, the professionalism all feeding the soul. This is an amazing performance.
