I went to see TLJ at the cinema and left not knowing what to make of it. It was kinda a similar feeling I had after watching TFA, but more pronounced, as I was left with the feeling I had not really seen a Star Wars film. Seeing Adrian Edmundson in the cast was a welcome surprise, but that wasn't enough to avoid the cold reality that TLJ wasn't even a compelling stand alone sci-film, let alone Star Wars, given the drip drip of weird PC plot threads and whatever the f*ck they did to Luke, which is just beyond description.

It's funny, you would think that someone like me, a life-long sci-fi fan who saw the original Star Wars back in 1977, would be absolutely dying to see The Rise of Skywalker. Instead, I feel not the slightest desire to see even a preview. That should worry Disney and the assorted directors, producers, writers, editors and actors that worked on that movie, but it won't. They have no use for the older generation of fans like me and look forward to replacing me with a slew of blue-haired 18-year-olds with the attention span of crack-addicted mandrill baboons (my apologies to all the normal, well-adjusted 18-year olds out there, you know who you are). This series is deader than Dillinger. But look on the bright side, at least I get to watch some really good scathing criticism from everyone's favorite drunken Scotsman. Cheers!

I was 3 in 1977, but I do remember watching Empire at a drive in theatre in '81, I am in Australia, it took ages for us to get anything. But I am of the same opinion as you, The Last Jedi is the only Star wars movie I have seen once, and in hindsight, I regret it is that many. Disney has completely ruined my excitement for Star Wars, something I would have thought impossible to achieve. When I saw the trailer for Ep 9 and rey leaps over the TIE, I thought, you gotta be fricking kidding me, edited for PG 13 audiences. Nothing against Daisy Ridley, but the Rey character feels like she has been written by a young fanfic writer who does not have a clue on the depth of people, that struggle is relatable and being a Mary Sue just turns people off the character straight away.

The best path forward, IMO, is that the franchise is sold at a substantial loss to a group who can actually make movies, and they can produce an alternate series of movies that completely ignores these as if they don't exist. Simone The Digger I hated the movie when I first watched, mostly because I disagreed with the poor decisions made by the rebels. And then I realized that the point of the movie was to show character flaws and question the jedis. And the movie did that decently well. So I feel neutral about the movie instead of pissed off. Jack Spiring: Not only that, but they’re wanting to promote their agenda so blatantly the writers forget about actual storytelling. For example the movie In Time was a propaganda piece in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement. But the concept was very original. People had genetically encoded countdown timers to death and they had to work for more life time. The base storyline was a typical Bonnie and Clyde crime spree mixed in with a bit of Robin Hood rob the rich, give to the poor touch, and some lines that are plain cheesy or satires of other pop-culture movies, all with decently flawed, but predictable characters. Unless you really didn’t make the connections you’d never know you were watching a propaganda piece for SJW’s and income gap problems that can be solved through socialism and “bringing down the system.” I don’t agree with those politics, but I still had a good time watching the movie. That is the difference between remembering good storytelling and just smashing our faces with woke BS.

The prequels were probably the most anticipated movies of all time, and nothing could possibly live up to that expectation. (Folks were waiting up to 20 years for them.) That said, they were boring, they didn't have likable or sympathetic characters, nor a traditional heroes journey. The overall plot about the conspiracy that created the empire was actually pretty good, but it's hard to sit through it buried under shitty CGI cartoon characters and backdrops, boring and or unbelievable dialogue, not to mention massively annoying obnoxious assholery from unlikable characters we should actually like or at least empathize with. It was a broken clusterfuck from beginning to end. They simply weren't good films telling a well made story about relatable or likeable characters in a classic heroes journey arc, nor were they a proper tragedy, which is what imo they should have been. We should have liked Anakin and seen a proper tragedy of how someone good goes to bad, instead of watching an insufferable asshole be a douchebag for 2 whole films after a disconnected introduction, and arguably the worst romance in cinematic history. The new films are only worse for being an insufferable cunty and deliberately insulting never ending series of underhanded digs at the core audience by a bunch of fucking hateful gender and race ideologues, who are actually less sophisticated and moral on their own talking points than the fanbase they are trying to preach against.

I was 6 when A New Hope came out. I was a fan of the movie before it even came to town. Had the entire set of bubble gum cards that came out, knew all the characters names, it was a magical time for me when my aunt took me to the movie opening night. I remember the smell of the new theater we had just gotten and how the anticipation was like electricity. The lights dimmed, then BAAAA BA BA BAAA! (Trumpets, with the rolling text my aunt quietly read to me.) It was a burnt into me like a branding iron. A New Hope, Empire, and Jedi.. That's my Star Wars! I think opening night for Skywalker, I will sit at home, put in my copy of de-specialized New Hope. And become 6 again for a couple of hours. Prequels at least had imagination put into them. The writing might be bad in some scenes, but they severly expanded the Star Wars universe and opened potential for new and exciting stories to be told. Both Takarovsky's and Filoni's Clone Wars being a prime example of that. Meanwhile Disney's Star Wars trilogy has non of that, instead copying elements of the more successful Star Wars trilogy. Just compare how unique and interesting planets like Geonosis, Mustafar or Utapau are compared to something like Jakku or Crait.

@@KingRandor82 ROTJ had some good moments and gave closure to Anakin's story, but overall it was the weakest of the originals. Returning to Tatooine and another Death Star were hardly inspired or original. And the less said about the Ewoks, the better.

Quite simple actually. Who pays the bills? Who sends critics early copies or tickets to early screenings? Who pays for ad coverage on a KZbinr's video? It's just a job. Why would the movie pay someone to shittalk it, even if they were right? They don't care about a quality product, they care about making money, and critics care about maintaining a career.
