Oh Yes! Better than Sex Cake, Pistachio/Pineapple Version from the 1980s!

The 1980s tell us that this cake is better than sex, or anysex symbol you are into. I can't say that is the case but this is darn good!This dessert had invitations at every party! Let's bring it back!

1 Box Yellow Cake Mix
1 - 5.1 OZ Instant Pistachio Pudding Mix
3 Cups Milk
1 20 Oz Can Crushed Pineapple, undrained
1 Cup Sugar
1 1/2 Cups Sweetened, Shredded Coconut
1 Tub Whipped Topping
1/2 Cup Pecans, Chopped and Toasted
1 Jar Maraschino Cherries, Rinsed and Halved
Prepare cake in a 9x13 pan according to directions, let cool. Poke holes in cake with end of a wooden spoon. In a medium pan, bring pineapple and sugar to boil. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. Pour over cake. Sprinkle coconut over. Prepare the pudding with milk and stir for two minutes, pour over pineapple. Spread whipped topping over then sprinkle nuts and cherries all over. Refrigerate 3-4 hours.

Oh wow, I remember making a poke cake in my home ec class in junior high (think circa 1981-2). I think it was this very recipe!

@@yesterkitchen yep, it was this very recipe. I remember because it was my first encounter with pistachio pudding. It was also my last. I liked it fine, it just kinda fell off my radar somehow. Guess I'll have reacquaint myself and my family with it!

Every Christmas party in the 1980s had this cake. There's also a chocolate Better Than cake. The one I made had cherry cake, vanilla pudding, cherry pie filling, Cool Whip, pecans ( and some chopped pecans in the cherry cake batter) with some leftover cherry pie filling on top. I thought it was a bit cloying but everyone else loved it.

Hi Jade! LOL! Every party in the 80s indeed! Your version sounds fantastic! There is a chocolate caramel version and I was trying to decide which one to make. But after experimenting, the sweet meter was just way too high on that one so I went with this. Which is actually one of the very first versions. But when I make it again, I'm trying your version! Yay! There used to be an old woman in her 80s that would always make this cake and bring it to our church potlucks! (Maybe 10 or 15 years ago) People would always ask her what is this? And she would always respond with a straight face, it’s better than sex cake! And she would sit and look at you waiting for your reaction and then just bust out laughing! Wow, Jill, that cake looks amazing! When you poked the holes with the wooden spoon, I thought about "poke cake." Thanks for the tip about not poking all the way through to the bottom. I always loved the lemon pudding cake back then. I’ve found an old recipe called sponge I think and it separates into cake on top and pudding on bottom. Just eggs separated, little bit of flour, fresh lemon juice and rind. Yummy.

The Better Than Sex Cake we made in the 1980’s was a white or German Chocolate Cake. Poke the holes and use Mrs. Richardson Hot Fudge ice cream topping to go into the holes. Next use Mrs. Richardson caramel ice cream topping. Next frost with Cool Whip. Place a crushed Heath bar and toasted pecans as the top layers. Refrigerate for 4 hours. I guess this recipe varies from the region the person lives in. Your recipe looks great as well.
