1:30 you're legit onto something. There's a great book called Why We Drive that's a philosophical read on the pleasures of driving and in one of the early chapters the author discusses some research saying that the sensation of movement and completing tasks which require effort are directly linked to our feelings of happiness. It would stand to reason that biking to complete even a mundane task like getting groceries would reward your brain more than in a car designed to be as unintrusive as possible. I dig this take, I think more people should commute in ways that challenge you more and force a level of concentration you don't get from todays cars that are "safe and uncompromising".
@90degreesSquare3 жыл бұрын
Also worth noting, if you are able to bike everywhere you go you are in an area that is safe and ergonomic enough for biking. Urban design is a major part of making a happy enviorment and I think many parts of western Europe have better urban design.

The lady was obviously talking bollocks, but I think what she was trying to say was that there's a lot of media spin and puff pieces being made about the nordic countries, and the government and politicians are always trying to tell how awesome and great the nordic countries are, that it creates a disconnect, where you're constantly being told that you live in such an awesome country where you should be happy and everything is possible, and yet your own life-experience goes against that narrative. It’s sad, so much of America is based around brands, money and pride: Hollywood, Disney, Coca Cola, Apple, Amazon, Google and “Number 1 military in the world” So much of it’s People are so caught up in being a citizen of the most influential country in the modern world that they forget to look at their own lives and how that is going. I remember when I was little, I always wanted to go to New York. I was so excited on the cab drive to Manhattan from the Airport looking out over the city. The novelty quickly wore off after seeing the 5th homeless person sitting on some street corner. And it’s like that for most of the hyped up places in the US unfortunately

Im American from CA. Even in relatively liberal state, people have some American pride to live out the American dream, succeeding in a “meritocracy” where people pull themselves up by their bootstraps like ye olde colonists did. (Small loans of a million dollars not included in fine print) Not only did the colonists not do that but it’s so backwards compared to these non-superpower countries performing so much better than us in terms of quality of life. Living here, I’ve come to realize that Americans worship capitalism and the free market, rejecting social service or government intervention as socialism. (Everyone knows socialism is when no food and dictatorship ruins your life) China is the new USSR and the big red scare, people here don’t even know the difference between communism and socialism. School shootings are more common than the occasional natural disaster in the news and people are too numb to it to realize that it’s not normal at all. Nationalism and nostalgia for a free America that has never historically existed without oppression of minorities has blinded conservatives from change. (Oh MAGA! oh my constitutional rights to let children cower while their classmates get gunned down in their safe educational spaces as the founding fathers intended! Oh my medical freedoms! Reeee) It’s sad.

I think perhaps people were stressed about work-life balance in those nordic countries is because that's actually an attainable goal for most people. it's easy to scoff and be like "what no, we deal with that here everyday and that's fine", because that is the expectation -crushing misery from constantly working to escape poverty or to just survive as you are. If you can not only survive but thrive without a crushing 9-5 in those countries the amount of stress working life brings seems more prevalent and accepted and not just mentally swept under the rug because 'that's the way things are'. my parents and my parents parents worked back breaking jobs in an exploited country. it is only through the lives and labour of generations that i can have what i have today, perhaps they would scoff at the stresses of my life in comparison to how 'liveable' theirs were but, that doesn't mean my stresses aren't important or meaningful just that when people are conditioned to believe hell is the norm and there's no way out, purgatory seems like heaven to those that have it worse.

Obviously the air craft carrier thing is a joke but it does have real merit to it. The US gets a lot of shit for military spending (and the military budget is too big) but part of the reason these European countries like Finland do not need to invest in their military is the strong alliance they have with the US. Some of it gets a bit hypocritical at times but I get it.
