Restoration of an OLD and EXTREMELY rusty hunting knife in my 19th century workshop. I don’t know what happened to this knife, but it looks like it has been lost and spent a good portion of time underground.
About The Flora Pocket Knife
It is hard to tell anything about this knife since there are no markings on the antlers, guard, pommel or on the blade itself. It is medium in size, not too heavy and fits nicely in the hand.
The Restoration Process
I started by dismantling the knife. Place all parts in the vinegar overnight. Next day I cleaned brass and steel parts and grind the blade to remove deep rust pittings. Sanded the blade up to 1200 grit and polished the blade. I repeat the same process for brass parts.
Antler covers were generally in good condition. So I just washed them, polished them afterwards and connected them with copper pins.
At the end I assembled all the parts and finally I could see the results of this restoration. IT is truly a huge difference.

Yyyyessss... It's not only that the restaurations that I prefer are the knives ones... but also this ones that has a keen perspective of restauration by definition... That means : Bringing to life as much as posible, and keeping all the peases and only replacing tha ones that needs to be replaced, instead of changing almost all to "improve" the peace... Cheers... PD : I think it's a Boy scouts knife.

There are many variations of these little hunting knifes. Most came from the Solingen region in Germany.

In which period of time hunting knives were so thin that they could bend, and had plastic hand grips...?
@ericj.w.ruijssenaars3421
@ericj.w.ruijssenaars3421 2 жыл бұрын
@@shofarox4037 The grips are mostly stag on these knives. With a stick-tang they are not the sturdiest of knives, that's thru. The blade has lost a lot of it's original shape. Most are made between the 50's and 70's.

Brilliant, that knife has obviously had a hard life and done much work, it has earned being restored and landed with the right person to do it justice, think this is your best knife restoration so far, all you have learned since starting certainly paid off for this one and was showcased for all to see, well done

Well done I especially liked your preservation of the stag handle scales and hand work . After watching many restoration KZbin videos where the handle gets broken and tossed it is nice to see the original one reused Great video Perhaps a water trough on the old stone grinder would be an improvement? Thank you Johnny! Well noted! Temperature goes under freezing point at this point in my shop and having stone soaked with water could potentially brake it. Therefore I am doing smaller items that are just fine without water. Have a good one!
