Күн бұрын

This time I am restoring a super old rusty cleaver. It looks hand forged with a maker's stamp on it. It is in terrible shape including the handle. Handle is partially made from leather and thin pieces of wood.
About The Rusty Cleaver
I did research about the maker's stamp on it and found nothing. It seems that this blacksmith was local. I would presume that he made this one for personal use since the details like tang, handle and the blade itself are not lined well and with different thicknesses. Pluss during this cleaver restoration I see the hardening hasn’t been done properly either. From what I have seen this looks like it was made out of iron, unfortunately.
The Restoration Process
I started by removing the old handle and tried to remove surface rust as much as I could with a steel brush. Then I soaked overnight old cleaver in oxalic acid solution. This helped really to dissolve the rest of the rust.
I sanded and grinded the blade multiple times, reforged the cleaver tang to be more even in thickness and slightly longer. Also I did hardening of the cutting edge.
At the and I attached freshly made wooden covers and hammered copper pins to hold the handle in place. Applied teak oil to the wood as a last step of this restoration.

Please note that this is NOT how to video! Restored items in my videos are for my personal use and they represent early 1900's. I like how restored items turned out and looking forward using them in future videos. Also it is ok to not watch my videos if you don't like old treadle powered tools, outfit and my shop from early 1900's! Remember, the choice is all yours.

brilliant, you have done a tidy job of that one, do like the use of the birch wood, very traditional and very nice to work with. One tip, although not an old way but sawdust and superglue fill gaps well and stay in place far better than PVA glue does. Good to see you have some more new tools and have been off learning new skills again and are putting them to good use, keep doing that as you are getting better and better at what you do, and the best and most authentic restoration channel I have found is getting better and better
@andyc750
@andyc750 2 жыл бұрын
one thing to investigate further is heat treating your steel, build a brick wall either side of your fire pot to concentrate the heat and give a bigger fire and keep moving the blade back and forth to even the heating, get the steel to a salmon pink colour and quench in oil for less risk of cracks and warping and to temper it you can heat another piece of steel and then when you have cleaned up the blade so as can see the colours place it on the hot steel and allow it to transfer heat, that way you can see the colours run into the blade and control the tempering process by dripping water onto parts warming to quickly

Thanks man, you are the only one who recognized the problem with the forge and suggested a great solution that could resolve the problem and be in the correct time period. Well done, I will definitely try adding bricks around since I am losing heat. You gave me excellent instructions on how to have better control. I really appreciate your time and great advice. I just need to figure out how best to manage all things at the same time. It is hard to focus on the hardening process itself and moving the camera around and other things rolling, but I will give my best next time! Thank you again and have a good one!

@@FFD_Restorations no worries, the world would be far better if we all shared knowledge and experiences, and I see the problems as I have as you know my very small forge and have had to find solutions to them, I am seeing you having similar issues so if I can help with sharing what I have found then great, it is worth looking at videos on KZbin of black/blade smiths from poorer countries to see how they do things without expensive tools as many solutions are to be found there, South Asian countries, India, Bangladesh etc are excellent resources for learning from

@@FFD_Restorations Burnt it huh. It happens to the best of us. Coal is tricky. Turned out great though. Candy of a cane style knife now. At least you were able to save the makers mark.

Yeah, unfortunately. This was sad but great learning experience. Thank you again, I appreciate that!

I really like how filmed are your videos, once again. But I must say, the heat treatment here is a little bit (to be honest a lot) uneven, didn't you succeed getting all your blade red?

Thanks! Well noticed, I had troubles to heat the blade evenly, so I did it multiple times. I need to get bigger forge. Thanks for watching!

@@FFD_Restorations I saw this but in fact you can't quench it in two parts, the heat will ruin your temper and you will get a soft blade, instead you could use a square tubing to homogenize the heat and bury the tube into the coal (the blade in the tube)

I understand, but as I mentioned, I need a bigger forge.

I am wondering why you added the hole in the top, it was totally unnecessary in my opinion, you changed the original. Nice work.
