In the warmer months they keep the mice and rats away and in the colder months they rely on a combination of hunting and begging for food from humans. Domestic cats will have a very hard time surviving more than a week or two in the wild, especially in colder climates. Chances are this is a neighborhood cat that has learned that humans=food and might be a little too old to hunt as successfully as it used to.
