About this Video: Capone is a 2.5 y/o Old English Bulldog. He has the tendency to pull on leash, lunge and bark at dogs and motorcycles. This training video is an overview of exercises that will help to teach Capone to walk politely on leash, systematically building on distractions.

Wow, Capone and Dixie are so similar! She is an OEB also and very energetic to say the least! My girl is 18-months old now. She was a train wreck when we got her at 15 months. She was clueless on a leash and bolted out the door at every opportunity dragging whomever was unlucky enough to be attached by the other end of the leash. LOL Being patient and consistent with my criteria was very successful. Any time she would pull I would stop and wait for her to look at me to allow our walk to continue, being calm and patient all the while. We were very respectful of one another and now she is brilliant on a leash. If she creates tension on the leash with her exuberance by getting a bit further than she should she will then release the tension on her own. She is a happy girl. We are just now working on obedience. Wish us luck!! Also, as far as food, Dixie is a frenzied eater; every morsel might be her last! We often feed with puzzles, all of which she has mastered with great zeal and brute strength. haha Not much finesse from our OEB. We also work on her taking treats with an EASY command. She is food defensive so we no longer train her at the same time as our other two. She is our girl and a beautiful work in progress! I might just check out some tug toys for her as another positive reinforcer. Still learning what she values as reward. :-)

It's true, people should research the breed and choose according to their lifestyle and previous dog experience. Although I can't say there is any easy breed. While a chihuahua may not be as strong as a mastiff, each dog has their own individual challenges. It's important to go in ready to invest a lot of time and energy into developing a solid relationship, and teaching the dog how to thrive in their environment.

For 2 weeks~ keep the walks short in both duration and distance. For example, 5 minute walks with a radius of 50 feet from your house. Engage your puppy by walking 4-5 feet and then rewarding with food or toy when he trots up to your side. By the end of two weeks you should have a puppy that is joyfully trotting with you every step you take. This is good for both leash and recall training because it desensitizes your puppy to environmental distractions (people, dogs, cats, squirrels).

use access to environment as the reward. teach him he gets access to dogs he knows/likes in a calm scenario 1st, once he learns the routine, branch out to dogs he knows in more distracting environments, then dogs he doesn't know, etc. Also, you could practice building tug at home and teaching him to like it. also, if he's free feeding or getting huge meals once or twice a day, that could be a major factor as to why he doesn't care about treats outside...keep him hungry and give food purpose!

@romper20 It's a process: The first step in the training is to establish motivation. If you want to build food drive you can adjust your dog's feeding schedule, or use a higher value reward (or both). The second step in training is to establish focus and impulse control in low level distraction environments, with controlled variables. Once these skills are learned in a controlled setting you can begin the process of applying these skills to real life distractions.

Hi Sam, The correct spelling of "stupid" is with an "i." Professional trainers use a variety of different reinforcers in training; food, toys, and attention. Some trainers also use punishers; e-collars, prong collars, choke chains, loud, sharp noises. Also, I'm not using final cut pro, but I've heard good things about it - will have to check that out.

@jatexeira - Thanks for the comment. This is a very common issue for puppies, even more so for bully breeds. The trick to overcoming a puppy that "plants" is to keep the walks short AND engaging. For a period of 1-2 weeks you should go out on every walk equipped with some sort of high value reinforcement. You can use boiled chicken (anything moist and meaty) or since you have a puppy with high toy drive (I saw Nico's fetch video) use your pup's favorite tug toy. Engage your puppy on walks.

You have a beautiful old English bulldog?!! I have two old English bulldogs they are sisters from the same litter. One is 65 lb the other is 95 pounds. I never had that is there both females so on our side of the front door they will straight up try to murder each other walk out the front door and you can walk in them on the same leash. It's just a female territorial thing. I don't know how I ever live life without OEBs! Capo e is a stunner!!

Hi Alyssa - great video! I've got an English Bulldog - he's about 13 weeks right now and he well and truly does not like being walked on a leash. I don't quite trust him yet to walk without a leash. He's been pretty receptive to basic training so far - come, sit, lay, stay -- but could use some tips on getting him to walk when outside. I won't tug or pull him, but alot of the times it ends up with us standing in place... any input is appreciated!

Is your dog a Leavitte Bulldog(The Original Olde english bulldogge) or is a what we call a ”alternative bulldogge” meaning it have its own line of dogs in its pedigre and has different foundation dogs and dog breeds than the Original Leavittes Olde english bulldogge and is a seperate OEB type breed just like for example the Renascence Bulldogge created by Chadde from Gargoyle kennel.. im just wondering because its a really nice loking dog but it does not look like an Leavittes bulldogge,i really like the structure of this dog and its longer legs and body and the fact that its much larger than the Leavitte bulldogge..the coat looks really shiny witch indicate good health and from my experience good mental health,every experienced dog owner or worker knows that when a dog has por mental state(nervous or afraid etc) the coat stops to shine and its not as smoth so when a dogs coat looks like your dogs you know that dog is in a good place both mentally and physically!

I'm struggling i leash train my 15 week olde english bulldogge puppy. When i put a leash on her She freezes and completely shuts down... Any advice???
@legendsdogtraining
@legendsdogtraining 9 жыл бұрын
Jessika Racquel - Freezing is a very common, very normal behavior for puppies when they are on leash. They are highly stimulated by the sights, sounds, smells of the environment. They want (and need) time to take it all in. For some puppies, it is just not realistic to expect that they will be able to go on a walk around the block, or for walks around town like an adult dog. It's important for her to take in the sights, smells and sounds of the environment, go outside and give her time to do that. You can break up that time by doing some leash training. Each time you walk outside you should carry some high value food in a training pouch, something that is moist and meaty and has a strong aroma. A leash training session might just be 30-60 seconds long, where you would reinforce her for checking in or for following your lead. You're going to do a lot of direction changes, and you probably won't walk more than 20 feet. That's okay. Keep the leash slack, don't pull on her. Most of my clients that report this type of planting usually tell me that it is no longer an issue by 6 months. *Patience is critical. If you keep trying to force the issue, this training process could take considerably longer. - Alyssa Lapinel, CPDT-KA PS: using a six foot training leash is ideal, avoid retractable leashes or short leashes.

At what age should I start teaching,different commands to my Old English Bulldog( mine is 5 weeks old),thanks for any help you can give me
@legendsdogtraining
@legendsdogtraining 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve! I start training with a lot of puppies at 8-10 weeks... although I’m focused more on reinforcing desirable behaviors (with food or toys that the puppy loves) than on teaching the verbal cues associated with those behaviors. You want to teach the behaviors to fluency first, before trying to associate it with a word. Does that make sense? Reinforcing puppy for standing, sitting or lying on a training mat, or dog bed. Reinforcing puppy for checking in with you in your living room, back yard or around “distractions.” Keep it simple, keep it fun, you can easily add cues later down the road. Keep me posted on how the training is going! Best, Alyssa Rose

Don't you have a problem with how aggressively he takes the treats from you? Shouldn't this be addressed also?
@legendsdogtraining
@legendsdogtraining 9 жыл бұрын
K UU G Hey! Thanks for watching my video, and for your comment/question. I find that the manner in which a dog takes food from a person corresponds to the level of stimulation picked up in the environment (it is 80% symptomatic of stress and arousal generated by environment, 20% learned). Capone's primary issue was that he was highly reactive with people, dogs, skateboarders and motorcycles. During my 10 day board and train with Capone my criteria when training on the street, or in the park was for him to engage with me when he is around distractions and to systematically desensitize and counter condition him to any stimulus that would normally trigger reactive behavior. If I cluster criteria: engage with me around distractions and "eeeaaasssssy" when taking treats - I would likely increase the dog's frustration, increase stress and lose training momentum. Still haven't had my coffee yet, let me know if I explained that sufficiently. And thanks again for watching. - Alyssa
@kuug1981
@kuug1981 9 жыл бұрын
Alyssa Lapinel Yes that explains it. I can tell you've done a lot of work with him. I've had a couple dogs that I did not feel comfortable with their aggressiveness for food and trained them off of that. I have a pit bull right now that I'm working with and he was this way also, big baby otherwise. In the month that I've had him he has done much better with the easy or wait commands. Nice to get a different perspective on it. I was not sure about this breed, I've trained many English bulldogs and have been debating on getting a olde, is their temperament happy go lucky like the shorter English?

Hi, thanks for watching and taking the time to write in. Unless you’re planning on showing, your dog can be on either side. I like to work on both sides so that if I am walking past a person or dog - and I want to avoid any type of interaction - I can easily call my dog to the opposite side. If there is a person or dog to my left, I would call my dog to my right side. Thanks again for writing in. Best, Alyssa Rose, CPDT-KA

Congratulations on your new addition! I love Olde English Bulldogges. Is he chewing through the harness? Or is it that he is pulling a lot on walks? I really like Wonder Walker harnesses, you can buy them on this website: wonderwalkerbodyhalter.com/ They have a clip that attaches on the front of the harness that facilitates leash training and minimizes pulling. I do want to emphasize that the harness alone is not likely to make a major difference. It is important to pair the harness with training exercises that create a calm connection between you and your dog. The right type of training should promote a relaxed response on leash and create stronger communication in the face of distractions. I teach classes with this focus in mind. If you would like to learn more, here is a link to my online classes, the class I would recommend is called Heel Work: www.legendsdogtraining.com/online-classes/ Best, Alyssa Rose

geeq13 It's interesting you say that. I do agree that there are some training methods out there that suppress behavior, and the effects are robot-like. For me, personally great training is about enhancing communication, and building a strong relationship with your dog so that ultimately they're able to live a happier, fuller life. That's what I strive for in my training. Also important to consider a dog's natural drive. Capone LOVES to play tug, and that's one reason why I worked that into his training plan. Thanks for watching.
