I've been making almost an identical laundry soap for at least 8 years, and loving the fact that I don't spend $20 or more on a month's worth of laundry detergent. My version is 1 bar Fels Naptha, grated & then pulverized to powder in a food processor, combined with 2 cups washing soda & 2 cups Borax. My husband loves grating the soap for me since he likes the smell. I use 2 Tbsp per load in a standard top-load washer, but I've used it in front-load washers in the past with good results also, and I add 1/8 of a cup of regular baking soda if the laundry is smelly. You're absolutely right about the Fels Naptha being a great laundry pre-treater!

Thanks for the recipe and the commenter too. This will come in handy if SHTF gets any worse. I plan on making this soon, to have handy, when I run out of my normal detergent, which is getting so expensive and hard to find too. Thanks again.

Good recipe! The last few times I was in Walmart they didn't have Fels Naptha or Zotes. They had plenty of 20 Mule-team Borax & Baking Soda Wash. I said there's too many ppl watching prepper channels! Lol

Have always had a bar of fels naphtha to pretreat laundry stains. My grandmother and mother used it. It is wonderful to remove grass stains from kids clothes and sock bottoms from going without shoes. I’m now 73 and still have a bar. You are right about the poison ivy treatment also. Used it for everything. Puts other stain removers to shame.

I made my own powder laundry soap for 30 years or more from just grated Ivory and washing soda because washing soda and borax chemical compositions are so similar. I used it even when we had hard well water in rural Arizona, but the well and town water where I am now is so full of calcium, I can't use any real soap at all. So if someone watching has had a bad result, check your type of water because some hard waters will unfortunately leave soap on your skin, in your clothes, your washer and pipes. You can get a water softener, use not-real-soap detergents, or switch to rainwater. I think that kind of hard water is rare, and it was a surprise to me. Otherwise, the powder always worked great. Detergents weren't getting the sweat smell out of my husband's shirts, but the Ivory/washing soda worked a charm. Highly recommend it!

I always add some oxiclean, same amount as the washing soda and borax, then I store it in an old oxiclean container.

@@hootowlholler3760 Hi Hoot! Yes, it did get "real", but many blessings in the difficulties. My daughter and her husband, who have mocked me for years, are now on board with me on growing as much as we can. They still do not know the true significance and depth, but they are now concerned that they cannot get the milk and bananas for their children at will. I am grateful my grandchildren are out of school and with me full time. Life is a mystery, but blessings still come. Thank you for your comment. Blessings to you my friend!

Great suggestion. I looked into this somewhat a while back; when I wanted to go all natural with cleansers in the house. I didn't feel that there really was a reliable way to properly clean clothes without some form of man-made chemical ingredient. I decided to stop my investigation into laundry soap after that, and continue buying my Arm & Hammer. Can't always find my go to brand now, so I may have to give this a shot. 👍💞

I use Fels Naptha for stains and it takes 99% of them away. I would really like to try homemade detergent too now. Is it good for HE washers because I heard these potent soaps might break them down? Thanks.

Zote soap works also. The wife has a little bag and puts that in the washer with soap berries, they are an alkali (high surfactant). They grow wild in many places. The wife soaks a weeks worth of the dry soap at a time. In cold wash water sometimes the soap doesn't dissolve. If you make your own soap, coconut oil base cleans the best. That's what the Big boss said. If we get down to washing by hand get a pair of overall for the the dirty jobs and wash them once a week. The old folk kept them at the barn and swapped cloths. One nasty pair rather than seven. Same with aprons a stained apron is OK, not every shirt your wife owns.

I absolutely agree with him this bar of soap is wonderful and it is a multi-purpose item. Great for hand washing your laundry and getting all of those bad stains out of your clothing.😍😍😍😍 I have never used it for poison ivy now that I know will use it. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 And I have used it in DIY laundry detergent in liquid DIY recipes. 😍😍😍😍😍😍 My home recipe is.🤔 Two bars of FILS-NATHPA.🤔 Use a cheese grater .🤔 In a 5 gallon bucket with one gallon hot water mix it and tell it dissolves you can add one more gallon of hot water if you need.🤔 Add 1/2 cup Borax.🤔 Add 1/2 cup of laundry baking soda.🤔 Add 1/2 cup of Regular baking soda.🤔 Add 1/3 cup OxiClean.🤔 Add 1/3 cup of kosher salt.🤔 Add two or three cups of Down dishwashing liquid detergent the blue one with the duck on it.🤔 You can add up to three gallons of hot water remember this is a super concentrated laundry detergent.😍 1 tsp to 1 tbsp per load of laundry if using a washing machine. 😍 And absolutely use white vinegar as your fabric softener only.😍 Around six tablespoons of white vinegar pur load.😍 If you are hand washing your laundry in a 5 gal bucket or a large rope handle bucket or in your tub you can use one or two tablespoons per load.😍 I just love to hang dry my laundry outside even in the winter as long as it is not raining or snowing.😍 I do use my dryer for bulky items like heavy blankets and coats and jackets .🤔 I use a wooly ball with some pure essential oil on it instead of fabric sheet which have too much chemicals in it and also causes damage to your washing machine. 🤔 So never use store-bought fabric softener and fabric sheets they damage your washing machine as well as your dryer and is unhealthy for you. 🤔 I absolutely do not like zote bars .😮
