It was one of my favorite dishes, served with mashed potatoes, buttered bread and cooked garden greens. Thanks for the memories and recipe. Perfect on a cold day. My mom used to make this. The chicken would be falling-off-the-bone tender. And that gravy! She just called it chicken dinner. I don't think any of us knew it actually had a name, but it was definitely a family favorite. I haven't made this in years. I can't think why, except that I always overeat when I have. So good. Well, now I'm craving it. And I have chicken legs in the freezer.

Looks delicious! The canned greens reminded me of the how my East Texas relatives up in the country used to eat them. I remember the glass ketchup bottle they filled with tiny red round peppers they grew and then they’d fill it with vinegar...it was their home grown hot sauce...very good on cooked greens. When the liquid level would go down in the bottle they’d just add more vinegar. An infusion!

You season things just like I do & I can just imagine what it smells & tastes like. I do a similar recipe with sour cream, cream of chicken soup & seasonings like yours & season, flour & brown all chicken parts & pour my gravy over my chicken & spoon it over rice after it's done. I try yours next weekend. I'm 68 now & my Mom started teaching me how to cook when I was 5 & my family comes from Kansas & Mississippi, so like you I have 65 yrs of cooking under my belt lol. Again thank you for sharing your recipe.

My mom made this when I was growing up, and I've made it a few times and it is always so yummy! This one looks the most like Mom's. We didn't flavor ours so much with the spices, just a lot of salt and pepper...and we didn't put the onion in like that, but if we had thought of it we probably would have :) . Mom cooked it both on the stove and in the stove. She called it fricassee though I don't think it's true southern fricassee. Mom would fry the chicken, then add some more flour just like you did and make a roux, add water, bring it up to heat then put the chicken in and let it cook. She even just fried the chicken then poured water over the chicken in the pan and stuck it in the oven...it would make it's own gravy. So delicious.

Almost exactly how I do my pork chops and yes they are tender and delish. I've never tried chicken this way but it's next on my todo list. Love it!

One of my favorite meals. We also do pork chops and round steak. I haven’t had it in a long time. 🥰 The round steak takes longer to cook, so we cook it in beef broth and onions, then remove the steak and make gravy.

I knew never knew what smothered chicken was. Come to find out I've eaten it all my life. This is what grandma always made for Sunday dinner but she'd make it and put the chicken in her big roaster and dump the gravy on top of it and let it cook on low in the oven while we were at church so it was ready to come out when we got home. The way she stretched out the meal was lots of biscuits on the side and potatoes too and you could have gravy on your biscuits and your taters good good memory

Diana, I'm a firm believer that anything left cooking while you're at church has been double-blessed as good eatin'! I've done the same thing with smothered fried cubed steak and it melts in your mouth! Seriously, when we Southern Cooks put something that's already delicious on to cook low and slow, it's got to be "larrupin'!" 😊😉 (I don't know if I spelled it right, but I just love to hear Mrs Lori and Mr Brown say that!)

@@shelwhitley1011 I agree most all of Grandma's Sunday dinners went in the oven low and slow and I think they were all larapin

Looks delicious! Smothered chicken reminds me of my favorite meal growing up - mom would fry off the chicken, cover in canned golden mushroom soup and water, put it in the oven, and roast until cooked through. It was the best.
