Fantastic players.
@Baribrotzer4 ай бұрын
Did you notice how much the woodwind players had to switch off? They're constantly putting down one horn, picking up another for a few bars, going back to the first, going to a third, and so forth. They need to be able to sound like symphony players one second, and like big band jazzers the next. Probably another Sondheim hallmark - as well as arguments set to music, involving difficult headlong vocal lines and song structures full of jump-cuts in tempo and key.
@treesny4 ай бұрын
@@Baribrotzer Or a Jonathan Tunick hallmark! Remember, he had orchestrated the original Broadway production, for a much bigger orchestra, so no doubt he pushed the "pit" musicians' fabled versatility to the limit for this scaled-back instrumentation. Astonishing that his richly-deserved Tony for Merrily was the first he had ever received for orchestrating a Sondheim musical!

@@Baribrotzer Thank you for explaining that. We need some generous people to ensure that acoustic musicians (in large numbers) and also dancers (in large numbers) are REGULARLY part of shows on Broadway - and touring the US. And also people who will back the creation and production of ORIGINAL musicals (as distinct from musicals which make a narrative from past pop hits) on Broadway and beyond.
@Baribrotzer4 ай бұрын
@@philipbenjamin4720 ".....musicals which make a narrative from past pop hits....." There's a point to those, however: They bring people who aren't part of the usual Broadway audience out to the Great White Way. Although even this production - it's excellent, but would it put as many bums in seats if Damian Humbley (from the British cast) played Charley?

Well, one of his first big singing roles was in How to Succeed in Business (Without even trying) so he kinda cut his teeth in that style. Yes, he did some singing prior, but it's a very specific style.. And Sondheim is generally that vibe too. In any case, Daniel's managed to impress on the stage and screen for many years, and being with Groff probably elevated his game some too.
@lorenzwinterhoff80495 ай бұрын
@@ajlichty7399 Funny thing about that, most Broadway style singing cuts the accent out of most words. Listen to Les Miserables and unless it's more of a spoken tone song the accent is hardly there.
