A song that relates well to today's music, even though it was a slam against the disco scene back in the day. Also by the mid to late 70s there was a swelling backlash against the excesses of the many tangents that Rock had gone taken and to some extent those excesses only became worse during the 80s.

Little late on this reply but hey! I was stationed in Germany when disco had just started. I went over to the battalion, where all the men were housed (separate barracks back then), into the common room. Some new guy had just come in and came down with a disco album and put it on the stereo. Dead winter, I mean cold out. The guys picked the newbie up, took him up to the main door and tossed him out in the snow and threw his record on top of him, one being a country music fan. Then they locked him out. He wound up staying with a new guy in another battalion he shipped in with. He couldn't get back into the barracks until the next day.

George Jackson was a songwriter for Muscle Shoals. He wrote this song and the Swampers made a demo for Bob, who often recorded in Muscle Shoals. He tried the song with his band and was not satisfied. One day at the studio a teenager and his mom and dad stopped by to visit the studio. The kid had his guitar and wanted to play. The owners were about to show him the door, but to humor him they let him play along with the demo. The owners liked it, Bob Seger liked it, so what was finally released was the original demo performed by the Swampers, and this boy. I believe his name was Howie McDonald. When the song went big, he tried to get studio work with little success. I think for many years he toured around with some musicians in an effort to parlay his "fame" from having played on a monster hit record.

I couldn't rate this song because I'm numb to it. It is easily the most overplayed song in rock history. I can't imagine anyone over 40 having not heard this song at least a hundred times. Even before it was in the movie Risky Business it got played over and over and over on rock radio. The lyrics made it very popular to use for many different purposes in different media. Then after Risky Business it blew up even more. It's a great song, no doubt, and I've played songs I like over and over dozens of times, but this is the only song I've heard scores of times not by choice. I never just want to play this song because I know I will hear it again soon enough anyway. Bob was such a good writer he is credited for an Eagles song called Heartache Tonight. The band called him on the phone and was stuck and he came up with that title name and chorus. You guys mentioned he should discussed as one of the greats with his voice, I agree. Reed regularly played the National Anthem during sporting events, including MLB and NFL games. He is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his Silver Bullet Band contributions and played with The Ventures for their Hall of Fame induction. he had his own band and played on the recordings of many hit singles by Famous Rock acts. Sorry, Andy, there was definitely an intense dislike of disco back then--especially after"Disco Duck" came out--and I'm sure Bob was no exception to it. Also consider that when this came out, old time rock and roll was the original wave popular in the fifties and early sixties--stuff by Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Elvis, etc. It's a generational thing--every generation has nostalgia for the music when they were kids, what's modern just doesn't compare. Also this makes me think of an interview I read back in the seventies of Bob Dylan where he claimed he wasn't a rock and roller and really no one was anymore. To him rock and roll was the fifties stuff and what we had in the seventies was just rock.

Saw Bob Seger in college when his first hit "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" was popular. Great show! Thanks.

Bob is a student(with deep respect) of the Stax cats which is in part what makes him so great!!! 1) Wilson Pickett - Land of A Thousand Dances.(Very close to Rambling Man ) 🔥 BTW This film is forever associated with Tom Cruise and Risky Buisness. This is his most popular track and almost unfathomable that A&A are not familiar.

Yes! Though not Stax, his cover of Otis Clay’s “Trying to Live My Life Without You” is one of Bob’s best nods to Memphis music.

Yes, Seger has more good ones. My 1st choice for next Seger reaction is "Mainstreet", but "Still the Same" and "Rock and Roll Never Forgets" are almost as good, so I would be fine with any one of those three. "Old Time Rock and Rock" is one of the few big Seger songs that he didn't write. Maybe Seger has nothing against disco at all, but he thought this was too good a song to pass up, so he didn't let that one line stand in his way.

Guys I saw Bob Seeger at the MGM in Las Vegas in the early 90's. Now prior to that, growing up in Detroit in 60's and 70's Bob Seeger was the sh!t. When I saw him finally, I sang every single song, did not sit the entire time of the concert and cried my eyes out. Best concert ever and I lost my voice for a week after that but was so worth it. Roll me away is next song you should do.... Great reaction.

Bob Seger is the KING. I took my three grown sons to see him about 8 or 9 years ago in Omaha. At one point Bob was on stage during a solo doing a little dance (mind you he was about 65 years old then) and my youngest son said jokingly "Well he sure can't dance". I replied.....this isn't a Michael Jackson concert!

For additional Seger, check out "Roll Me Away" - one of Seger's best. Do the official video to watch him perform. Also go with "Rock and Roll Never Forgets" - The opening track on the "Night Moves" album. It's also the song that he opened his shows with on the "NIght Moves" tour. For a deeper cut, try "The FIre Inside" - It's a bit later than most of his hits but it's great. Also do the official video.

By tradition, shouldn't A&A be wearing white shirts and no pants for this one?

Don't forget the white socks that made the dance possible 😉😉

A & A always listening to the kind of music that just soothes the soul. Makes me reminisce about the days of old. With that Old Time Rock and Roll. This and Turn the Page are the favorites of Bob's songs that I have heard.

Heard it so many times one gets desensitized to it but it's definitely worth remembering there's a reason this song is so ubiquitous, it's basically flawless.

Andy, You mentioned horns when the Sax started playing . Just remember, at the time this came out, old Time Rock-n-Roll to Bob and a lot of us from the seventies was the stuff from the fifties and early sixties. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bill Haley and others. Stuff that you guys have barely even touched. Little Richard and Billy Haley. Saxophone was actually incorporated a lot into many 1950's rock-n-roll songs.

I love Bob Seger - top 20 all time - but S-tier? I don’t know. This is to R&R what Roses are Red is to poetry. Maybe it’s just been overplayed to death for 40 years.

@@jrmahan3405 Thanks for adding nothing. Maybe learn what a point of view is. From THEIR POV, it’s a color by numbers R&R song, so S-tier is surprising.
