Rusty Climber I’ve had RR’s and I agree about parts being expensive. That’s here in the UK. Reports show that over 60% of LR products are faulty which is horrendous. The thing is, If you get a good Range Rover, it’s brilliant and the best car you’ll ever drive as an all rounder, however the odds are stacked against the consumer. I’ve driven and owned a variety of cars from all over and still think when you get a decent RR that works, it’s the best.

I fear I may have to take it back to Lode Lane and get their engineers to check it over and reinstall some of that good old fashioned Land Rover unreliability. It is still an amazing car, today I trailered home an 8x6 shed, last month I was towing a ton bag of concrete and a mixer, it's my daily driver (apart from my Triumph Speed Triple but that would struggle to tow a ton) and I can truly say it is an amazing tool to own. It's one of those things than seems impractical but then you find out just how capable it is and use it far more than you think you would. The only downside is that it's a martyr to the drink but at least I get to enjoy that V8 noise through the sports pipe!

J200 was not as competitive in terms of luxury as the 80 and 100 were, in a smaller field of competition. By 1998, these nameplates were still the best to get in 4x4 luxury.

Its a shame British Leyland couldn't get their shit together and provide reliable cars. They had a bunch of interesting and very ahead of their time cars like the Range Rover. I mean that car came out in 1970, it was 20 years ahead of its time in terms of refinement. Keep in mind in 1970, 4wd SUV's were the tiny Ford Bronco, Jeep CJ-5, the Chevy K-5 Blazer, hell maybe the Jeep Wagoneer gave the Range Rover a run for its money in terms of similar space and refinement. But the Wagoneer was in a class of 1 in the American market, the Range Rover was kind of in a class of 1 in the world market until it was sold in the US in the 1980's, when it clobbered the Wagoneer in terms of refinement and being just modern.
@jmin84003 жыл бұрын
Great observation, in a sea of mindless commentary. Back in the 80s, it was just Range Rover, Grand Wagoneer, and then 60-Series Land Cruiser for premium utilities. MB formally joined the higher end fray with the W463 lux variants in 1990 and LC 60-Series gave way to the J80/Lexus LX (post '95). Jeep handicapped itself with ZJ Grand Wagoneer (GC variant) not going far enough in execution and in being too mass market (less prestige). P38A brought RR into the contemporary world with better ergonomics, but was not very distinctive and had a much shorter shelf life, plus the reliability quotient likely worsened.

Couldn't blame Clarkson. Love your own. But among the 3, the TLC is universally accepted no matter how he sour grapingly & pathetically bashes it.

I was 3 when he was throwing big words around big cars. What a long way he's come!

I like how he said the range rover was the best, but as you can see in the later top gear episodes he bought a series 80 land cruiser

Wow JC actually did reviews on cars back in the day. If I could choose one here it would be the Mercedes, just looks better than the rest.

Unfortunately the land cruisers last tax expired Sept 1994. The G Wagons last tax expired in Jan 1993 and the RR no longer has any details held on the database. Of course they could be on private plates if still alive.

Good on ya Clarkson but we all know which 4wd out of that trio is still a daily driver, towing heavy boats and going off road and it ain’t the Range Rover or G wagen!
@ossa6012 жыл бұрын
you are absolutely right!! toyota changed the way the world looked at 4x4's. Their reliability was so good that every serious company and organization in the world stop buying land rovers and bought land cruisers.

its amazing how dark it is...in all those old top gear episodes. And they havent bothered to turn the headlights on

just curious, could you cite where you found 65% of Land Rovers are still on the road? I am trying to convince my GF to get one, and she still think they are as reliable as 1970s Jaguars
@ezekielmwevila22846 жыл бұрын
Out of the three, Land cruiser is the most reliable vehicle.... it can take you anywhere and being sure of getting back. they also have big interior space for a driver and passengers of any size and its looks good externally also and it can be owned even by a lazy person as it's not very sensitive vehicle compared to the other. But when we talk about speed, stability, efficiency in rough roads ( 4WD ) and prestige.... the other two are the best (G class & Range rover), also the owner is required to be smart ( on time proper service & handling) in order to maintain them for a longer period. i current own RR classic but my heart is owned by G wagon.

Agreed. 81' Lancruiser HJ60 here with 600k kms. Only maintanance was just oil, filters, etc up until recently when the engine was rebuilt due to it blowing abit of smoke. Turns out it was the injector pump all along...

BTW the 60 series are decent sized, minus the driver legroom.

Is ti just me who noticed that white smoke fro Range Rover .?
anyone notice that it takes a little bit longer for the Range Rover to start each time, and it also pisses out white smoke from the exhaust where the other two don't? Having said that I would probably take the Range Rover over the Toyota Yawn-Box and the Mercedes Look-at-me Trophy.

Off road enthusiasts will forever drool over these versions of the G wagon and the Land C , they are the most reliable versions ever made and still cost a lot of money and are rare , the land R is a joke , the Defender would be better but unreliable.

My humble preference goes to the Range Rover, plain and simple, just because it 's so stunningly beautifull. I am very sorry to see Jeremy driving it like a teenager in a very pedantic way. That is with loads of throttle, where a gentle passage would be so much more 'English'. :-)
@gaputra985213 жыл бұрын
@desimunda116 u can grab a 1985 old 280GE or 1992 300GE like the one Jeremy drove above, and u still end up having the same interior space, windows, wheelbase, wheelspace, cabin, trunk, engine room and doors like today's 130,000 dollars G55 AMG.

i'm not saying that MB (G wagon) or Land Rover (Range Rover) don't know how to build a SUV to be reliable under extreme conditions, its that they know about 99% of the people who buy their SUVs will NEVER take it off road so they don't bother...
