Just a tip. If you will mix the cocoa powder with the sugar before you add it, it will dissolve much easier

Sifting makes it smoother also. If you cut up your butter in slices it melts faster and you won't run the risk of scalding your milk.

Home Ec. they need to bring that class back. I learned how to sew on the Bernina sewing machine and enjoyed the days we would get to cook. My favorite memory is when we got invite our parents for a dinner for two evening. We students cooked the same dinner and dessert for our parents. John McLoughlin Jr High, Mrs. Steiner was our Teacher, its been many years but I still remember that evening.

I've made these for 58 yrs and you can reduce your oats n add coconut to it and it's amazing! Add chopped pecans n chopped cherries! I've done alot of different recipes using this same method! Leave Peanut Butter out when doing some recipes! Amazing different cookies! Thank you! ❤❤😁

When you started putting them out on the paper, it was like a flood of memories came back to me! My Grandma had these all the time. I think around Christmas, she put peanuts in them? My Grandparents lived a block away, one day when I stopped in(age7-8)? for my cookie,I told her that I hoped she never ran out of them.I remember her laughing and sitting with me as we enjoyed our cookie. Thank you so much for this recipe and juggling a great memory. I will be making these for my grandkids.❤

A family favorite for 50 years, we pour the mixture onto parchment paper on granite countertop. Then cool and cut into bars. If humidity or the kitchen witch results in too gooey, it's no problem, we eat it with spoons.

POWDER CHOCOLATE TIP: If you mix your powedered chocolate in with any dry ingredients in the recipe, flour, sugar, cornstarch, etc., or in this case, mix the chocolate with the sugar in the bowl really well, THEN add it to the wet ingredients and it wont do the "hard to melt in dry clumps" thing when you add it to the milk & butter in the pan, even when it's still cold.

Look yummy. Thanks for sharing. How many can you make from a batch?
@OldTimeKnowledge
@OldTimeKnowledge 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm... to be honest, I don't know that I've ever counted them! It's going to depend on how large they are when you drop them out. You won't get as many as you would with cookies yo bake because baking cookies spread out so you can get more when you put a small one on the sheet. I'd say this would make about half of the amount you'd get from a basic cookie recipe, but these are also much richer and usually get eaten up quicker.

Yes, they definitely should get hard. Well, not hard, but probably the chocolate part is a similar texture as fudge. :)

is cocoa from like a hot chocolate mix suitable if can't find the pure hershey cocoa kind?
@OldTimeKnowledge
@OldTimeKnowledge Жыл бұрын
I don’t know that it l would work because hot chocolate mix already has sugar mixed in it so I wouldn’t even know how much you should use. You can certainly try it and then maybe cut back slightly on the added sugar. I just don’t know. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Which kind of oatmeal do you use? Old fashioned, or quick oats?

A lot of people have asked that in the comments. You can use either. I prefer old-fashioned. My mom uses quick oats. 😃 They are delicious either way!

I added the peanut butter in with the butter, sugar, vanilla and brought everything to a boil then added my oats. Either way is good. 👍

Did u use reg oatmeal or quick cooking oats?
@OldTimeKnowledge
@OldTimeKnowledge 3 жыл бұрын
Good question! I typically use regular oatmeal but I have used quick cooking oats. You can do it either way. I personally like the texture of the bigger oats, but the more finely chopped oats are good too.

We made a batch of these and went exactly by the recipe and while they do taste good they fall apart. I'm wondering if less oats would make them stay together.
@OldTimeKnowledge
@OldTimeKnowledge 2 жыл бұрын
You can certainly try less oats. That might help the issue! If they taste powdery, the mixture might have boiled slightly too long. Too long can make them powdery or extra crumbly, too short of a boil and they won’t set. I hope this helps!

Can you make these on cloudy/rainy day? Also, did you use a heavy or medium sauce pan?
@OldTimeKnowledge
@OldTimeKnowledge 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm... I've never paid attention to the weather while making these. I don't see why you couldn't make these on a rainy day. I think they should come out fine. Also, I'm just using one of my old copper-bottomed Revere Ware pots that I've had for decades.

were the oats you used gluten free? this was a great video btw!!!
@OldTimeKnowledge
@OldTimeKnowledge Жыл бұрын
I didn't even know that oats could have gluten? 🤔 It wouldn't matter if they are gluten-free oats or not because I would think they should work the same. We aren't trying to achieve any gluten elasticity here like we would with bread.

i like that you cut back on the usual 2 c. sugar i see many others use, i have cut it back also. and yay to, more cocoa! 😀 thank you! oh -- i meant to say that i put mine in the freezer on a couple of oval plates, with parchment. i'd say they could be bagged up that way, buuut... let's just say their freezer vacation is a short one. 😁 ** edited again ~ the idea of adding orange extract came to me when a thumbnail of orange salad appeared. oooo -- or maybe raspberry! i better get off of here, lol. take care, all. 😊

@OldTimeKnowledge ok, just made a batch. 😊 here's what i did -- omitted the pb, added 1/8 tsp salt (i use Himalayan pink) because i use unsalted butter, put in 1 tsp orange extract in place of the vanilla, put in 2 cups oats plus 1 cup shredded coconut (unsweetened). they're cooling now, so haven't had an official cookie yet, but the saucepan & the wooden mixing spoon have given the recipe 5-star ratings. 😁 let us know if you make some, too. again, thank you for your recipe! 😀👍

Can I put them in a square pan ? Will they sat up like that? I love them but when my sister makes them their very sticky but good so what is she doing wrong so I don't do make the same mistake
@OldTimeKnowledge
@OldTimeKnowledge 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm... I'm not sure about spreading them in a pan mostly because I don't know how neatly you'll be able to cut them. As for why they can come out sticky, that's usually going to be because they didn't boil for the full minute. It needs to be an actual boil for 1 full minute, but not less than that and not much more than that. If it boils much longer, they turn very powdery and crumbly.
