Yes, even if people do get to the point where they have completed training at drama school they may not be able to work to support their livelihood and put in the work to have all the auditions etc to reach that end goal. At some point there may be a breaking point at which one has to drop and ultimately, it will be the one that isn't paying the bills. Even if you don't believe in luck you have to acknowledge privilege.

I’m very much working class and studying musical theatre at university so it’s possible to try
@alicedodd55394 жыл бұрын
Bailey Parrington it’s definitely possible, but if you’re from a working class background and can’t afford the extra university financial burden (housing and living that a grant doesn’t cover) that’s a huge barrier and often extremely talented people can’t afford university full stop without a scholarship.

I went to drama school, came out and worked as an actor for three years. I absolutely hated the anxiety of it all. I went into work at an agency and never looked back. Now an agent in Ireland and it was the best decision. I can help actors achieve their dreams and I completely get where they are coming from as I’ve been there

Speaking from working in TV I find the whole 'right time, right place' thing is true however I phrase it a bit differently. I think its preparation meets opportunity, I think that way it gives credence to the amount of work it takes to get the job but also sheds light on how you need to find the right place to be to make use of that work you've done. If that makes any sense, it makes me feel better when people tell me how lucky I was to get hired into the industry after graduation haha

I’m an aspiring actor, currently still in training at college. But I’ve been struggling to find an agent, and getting rejected for lots of things that I’ve applied for, it hurts but I always smile and try again. I’ve been an extra in two films and I’m still so grateful for both of those opportunities because it always feels a little step closer to achieving my dream.

Thankyou for this!!! I’m trying to swap my career from the music industry to MT because I was never allowed to go to drama school by my parents, and now I’m nearly 25, can’t dance and am covered in tattoos. I constantly think ‘why bother’ because I can’t afford theatre school and I already have so many disadvantages (health problems etc) but this has inspired me to keep going. I never want to have that ‘what if’ feeling because I already have it! I feel like I’ve wasted 5 years xx

Thank you so much for this, I really needed to hear it! I often begin to debate what it is that I want to do with my life and always end up getting stressed and upset about it! I adore theatre so much, and I would love to do absolutely any job within that (be it acting, directing or costume designing!), but I'm also extremely academic, and always get really good grades. Oddly enough, I also love maths and physics and chemistry and would love to be a civil engineer! These are literal polar opposites, but your video has definitely given me a lot to think about, so thank you! x

the secret to being an adult is that there's really no way to know what you want to do until you start doing it! It's definitely impossible to know for sure what you want to do with your life while applying to colleges. The reality of getting out there and doing it as a job vs taking classes at school can be so, so different and you might change careers or find a new dream multiple times as an adult! I think for school the most important thing is to really be careful on how much you spend on your degree because you do have to consider the reality of paying back loans if that's something you'll have to do, or the reality of affording to live after school- but to also follow your heart. I went to school for TV production and thought I was going to be a screenwriter lol I worked in TV a year after school and was like eh...I'm good! Thankfully, I didn't have to spend much money on my degree lol Managed to get into healthcare and now 8 years later I'm in a pre-nursing program hoping to get into nursing school! But I don't regret my choice of major at all because I would have never enjoyed or even wanted to finish school if I was forced to spend that much time and that many years studying something I didn't like then. And almost no one has ever cared what my major was in school, just that I got a degree period. Try out classes in both majors, maybe theatre production could be a minor or even double major? Go out for plays! You'll very likely love that you did it in school even if you decide to take a career path later down the line. You can't control what your future is going to be, how successful you will be, etc. right now before you even start school! So definitely take some of that pressure off yourself :)

I agree with Oliver- Right place, right time accelerates the process. Ive been to unsuccessful job interviews, where my feedback was that on any other day the job would have been mine, but the person who got it had more experience or gave a slightly more detailed answer. If they weren’t there it would have been mine.

I've been doing shows with the same community theatre company for the past 3 years. Personally, I wouldn't mind carrying on doing it while also doing a real job. It would mean that I still get to do theatre without the risk of trying it as a career.

I’m so stressed about auditioning for drama schools next year hahah, but I know it’s the career I’m gonna be good at so I’ll have to just brave it 😂😂😂 idk why but drama school auditions scare me more than normal ones, maybe because for drama school they are like judging you as a person, rather than how well you can play a role. 😂😂😂😂 x

This is really motivating! A true passion for a career in MT is accepting how hard the journey may be, but knowing it'll be worth it ☺️ that's what I'm telling myself anyway (applying for drama school in September to go 2021)
@bridiekmusic63514 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on how far you want to go, or what your dream is. If you want to be a West End performer, then that’s what you’ll audition for and work towards. But some people don’t want that, or maybe not in the end. Some people go through all the training in the world and teach what they’ve learnt, others do Cruise ship work, I did music school and a whole bunch of people I graduated with are in bands, but not for the money. And some people do go through all the training and then decide that the industry just isn’t for them.

I'm a 2020 drama school grad and I've had so many moments of terror when I feel like I'm not good enough, or that I don't have the mental/emotional stability to handle hundreds of rejections, but after the couple of professional auditions that I've had, I've just had to tell myself that I wasn't right for the job this time round, but that it'll happen one day! However I will say that it's been really scary and demoralising getting loads of rejections from agencies (I've signed now though!) and also not knowing when I'll next get to do a show because of covid screwing everything up :/

I’m so incredibly nervous but also really excited to start a new chapter of my life. On this note I would like to thank you Carrie, for inspiring me to pursue my dream of theatre because when I saw you in Les Mis as Eponine when I was like 16, I knew I wanted to do that too. It’s my dream to work in MT! I especially want to do a national tour (that would be my “I made it!” job). But even though I can act, and I can sing, I live in a lower-middle class family, which makes it hard to take lessons because I simply don’t have the money. I have had to drop out of dance classes because we couldn’t afford it anymore, and I’ve never taken voice lessons, though they would help me a lot. Even though I have all the passion and drive, a career in MT is almost impossible for me because of my situation. Yes, some people in my situation or lower to make it to Broadway or West End, but the vast majority don’t. Sometimes, no matter how much you want it and work for it, you just can’t get it.

I don't know if it's necessarily the same for musicals but I've been in a lot of music ensembles and I find that the connections you make are a massive gateway for getting opportunities. For example I play violin and bassoon and a few times I've just been contacted by people I've played with previously if I'm available to play a concert with them or play in the pit for they're upcoming show because they know me and they know what to expect. Tldr: talk to people during rehearsals and make those connections

I feel like I’m in the same boat that Oli was in about right place right time. I have been struggling with booking jobs in theatre for about three years of living in NYC (booking only two jobs total in that time period) but I’ve made it to final rounds for tours and regional shows. I know I’m talented enough and work hard but it’s never right place right time for me. And it’s more frustrating than anything because there’s people who always get work but they don’t work as hard and I just feel like I’m struggling so much.

The fact that you’ve made it to final rounds says a lot!!! A lot of casting is so out of our control. But thats what Carrie and Oli were saying. You gotta keep working hard because sooner or later it will be the right place and the right time. You are so prepared that when the opportunity is right, all your preparation will have been so worth it! Good luck!

I know 2 guys from my old (very small, very local) dance school who both went to two different drama schools, one locally and one in London. I can't imagine how difficult it was/is for both of them, especially financially, and I bet it's weird because they are in two different places and in two different stages in their training. I never considered getting into theatre like them (I can't act lmao), but I wonder how well I would have coped if I had. I don't think I'm mentally strong enough to handle rejection on such a regular basis.

It’s sickening to see very average Soap/Reality/Pop Singers getting roles in West End musicals because the producers hope they will bring some of their fans into the theatre. I’ve seen Wicked 4 times, and each one had a Fierro from this list. And each one was the weakest member of the cast. I’ve seen understudies/ensemble covers so much better than these “celebrities”, yet may never be given the chance to play a full time lead. Let alone all of the ridiculously talented people who never make it onto the stage.
