King Blobby , easy as a pie in fact. You need to know how to swim, attend swiming pool regularly for few years, be healthy ofc. The real thing is not how they can last for 2 hours but how they can swim all this time with such high speed as they do. As for me, I can swim half an hour on high speed and 5 hours (maybe longer) in low tempo coz I know how to rest while swimming and not to waste lots of energy. Cheers !

Actually Greece was earlier at the finish line, but you need to be smart in sport and that's what Ferry Weertman is. Touching the plates is what counts.
@shieldwolfminiatures8645
@shieldwolfminiatures8645 7 жыл бұрын
Man, be fair. It's also with what hand you stroke last. Nobody can calculate that and the Greek just got in with the wrong one. He never contested the decision and had stated beforehand that "all I want is a medal". He had come fourth in London, this was his last chance to make it and he had vast experience. It's not a matter of being smart, sometimes it's just luck... PS. Watch for example how Phelps hitting the button was 2nd BUT since his opponent hadn't pressed hard enough it gave him yet another gold. As I said, to be the greatest sometimes luck is necessary. Still, an Olympic medal, no small feat huh? :-)

olympic silver is something , but olympic gold is forever . long time ago , a boxer from my country went in the final with a broke finger in his left hand from the previous fight . he was a southpaw . he already had the silver , but he wanted the gold . no matter the costs . the one and only box olympic champion from my country so far . this is the fabric champions are made .

The Australian guy did what we call "a death race". You go ahead and hope nobody catches up with you. They almost always fail in their attempt, but if they do manage to keep up the pace (even if inevitably they slow down towards the very very end) the distance created makes it impossible for anyone else to try sprint-catch them at the end.

I tried it once in an 800m running race and got third even though I had a twelve second lead at one point. It’s an ok tactic but it’s much easier to go at a steadier pace the whole way through

Gold in their hearts is something personal, I don't think the Dutch have any reason to complain about the Greeks feeling that way. Heck, Gianniotis was 36 at the time, what he did honors the Olympic spirit itself, not only for the achievement but for the fact he simply didn't give up. :-)

Open water swimming is a totally different beast. 10k swimming is a distance so hard to imaging to swim but you need also consider the current. If you have the current against you, the 10k can easily feel like 13-15k since you are barely moving forward. Which is even crazier

Such amazing commentary. Do olympic commentators have a code to follow a certain code? I love listening to the Olympic commentators.

Amazing athletes to be able to swim that long and that fast. It would take me a few days to swim 10k.

Riviting! And a classic example of the idea that creeps in to so many analyzing a race, where you think a great early lead can stress the pace and plan of the competitors but the risk is huge and that early spent energy leaves you with nothing left in the tank for the final run to the finish.

I find it interesting how close the world record paces of swimming and running are when you just divide the speed of a runner by 4. Convert swim pace /100m to lap pace on an athletics track and you're working with similar numbers. Fastest 400m freestyle is 3:40. Fastest mile run is 3:43. Winning time in this video equates to 1:07.79/100m. 1:07.79/400m is a 1:59:10 marathon.

I like calculating the exact stats.. this marathon is around 4:48/400 meters .. comparing that with 3:40 world record of 400.. it's just insane.. unimaginable how they can swim with that pace for 2 hours

If all notice at the video 1:35:20 the Australian swimmers turn on the Red buoy. But the chase group did short cut. Couldn't understand the referees didn't see that part.

Gianniotis what an amazing performance... He jsut lost because the dude from Netherlands touched the button first. Spyros was first. BUT i admit that Weertman won fair and square. ... Bad luck 2nd place due to unfortunate timing on hand stroke.
