@HalfMoonLakeHerps Жыл бұрын
Ovulation is very visible. Hold the female vertical and let the last half kind of dangle. There will be a LARGE bulge in the last third of the body, like she swallowed a football. It might last 24 hours, so unless you’re checking maybe every 12 hours you might miss it. Once you get some experience you’ll see it with the female laying in her cage. Matt has a video showing all of this and I’m sure if you KZbin “ball python ovulation” you’ll see more.

I love this video so much that I'm adding it to my Snake Breeding playlist! You put lots of good tips in there you don't find in other channels! Don't listen to Curt. When you have info like this to share long is good! There are too many basic videos out there and not enough like yours that go into more advanced stuff! I found it fascinating, as I hope to be breeding in the not too distant future! You had me cracking up laughing when you were talking about the female spraying all over and all the pooping going on while the two are in the process of breeding. I have been planning on moving my snakes eventually into my bedroom, but given this gross fact I think I will try to get a rack on wheels or casters and put it in another room when breeding is going on, LOL! I have a question that I have been unable to find the answer to anywhere. When males lock up with a female for several hours do they do that to deposit more than one sperm plug or just to keep the one from being expelled therefore maximizing the odds that the sperm will fertilize the eggs?

Excellent and informative video. I have a question for you. last season I paired my proven lesser male to virgin lesser pastel female. Observed half a dozen locks, then separated. Nothing came of the mating - no ovulation, no eggs. This season I've basically kept them together, only separating to offer food. Now the female has only refused a feed twice in the four years - Never fasted, and even though they's locked upwards of 20 times she is still eating a small 150g rat every 10-14 days. Have you ever had a female feed whilst being gravid ? I did think about stopping the feeds, but after watching this video will continue. Any suggestions or comments would be welcome

My question is your thoughts on power feeding females to get them to size just to breed... and the impact that has in the snake... I heard it cuts the snakes lifespan in half...
@TheCharleseye6 жыл бұрын
Personally, I don't see the need to push any animal to its limits like that. They're supposed to grow and mature at a certain rate. Forcing them past that is unhealthy, by definition. I'm not gonna power feed my daughter to get her up to breeding size, either. To clarify, I'm only talking about forced growth feeding. That's different from feeding more during breeding season. At that point, they're already at breeding size and the extra food is going to egg production (which is a good thing for the mother and the babies).
@OlympusReptiles6 жыл бұрын
I also don't power feed or chain feed. I will give a good size meal, but not try to chain etc. I usually expect a female to be ready in three. Some are in two. Some in four
@dylan-gh5ll6 жыл бұрын
I think feeding them once a week is plenty. I’m feeding my females that have locked two rats instead of one as they are ravenous right now. But I got my females up to size in three years feeding once a week. If they are are 1500 grams but just fat and not mature yet I don’t think they will breed very well.

I'm trying to do my research before starting breeding so I had a couple questions if you don't mind me asking. First, how can you tell when a female is gravid? You said something about ovulation and I'm sorry that I'm kind of new to all of this so this could be something really obvious but it's not obvious to me so I thought I would ask. As well as, would you usually only have one of your females breed once a year? I know that females will stay gravid for a month or two but after laying, how long would you give them a break without trying to breed again? Thanks for reading :)

This may sound like a stupid question.. but is there anyway that when you put two different males to one female and get a lock from both that the offspring could actually have a Gene from the mother and both father's?? FOR EXAMPLE.... Pastel Momma, Spider Dad1, and leopard dad2, is there any chance of having a pastel Leopard spider baby??? Just out of curiosity I just noticed you didn't cover that when you were mentioning how you occasionally put 2 males with the female and note both of them at around 14:30
@OlympusReptiles6 жыл бұрын
There isn't. There can be multiple father's in a single clutch of babies, but each individual snake can only have a single dad
