It's been 3 years since the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III arrived. It's also one of the best selling cameras in the entire Olympus line up. Three years on, is it still a good camera? Do you want to get it to start your photography journey? Or you want to wait to see what Olympus will give us in the future?

I still use my Olympus film cameras. I'm a professional photographer. You dont need 500000 pixels to be a good photographer. This little gem is more than enough for a pro to get any picture they want.

I’m new to photography and cameras so would like some help please... for me it’s not been a great experience with this camera the lense doesn’t seem to focus properly and doesn’t take picture when pressing. When I finally take a picture it’s blurry and crap quality lighting it’s awful too, many good reviews so I’m giving the camera the benefit of the doubt and saying it’s probs me who’s doing it wrong. Please help?

Just bought the Mk III as an upgrade from an old Panasonic superzoom camera I’ve had for a few of years. As a complete amateur, the value for money of the Mk III at the moment is fantastic considering how it compares to other entry level mirrorless cameras. My other option was a Fujifilm X-A7 but a viewfinder and image stabilisation sold me on the Olympus for the same price, even with the smaller sensor. The Mk IV looks like a decent upgrade but for my minimal use as someone who dabbles in photography, I’m keen as a bean to try out the Mk III. Thanks for the updated review!

I went for the mark II because it felt a little better in the hand (maybe it was the difference between having metal top and bottom plates vs. plastic ones, but I also seemed to just 'fit' better). The photographic capabilities were so close, and I didn't have any interest in its video output, so there just wasn't enough draw. The used price was actually pretty close for each model, but I had the feeling that the Mark II is the one that may be considered more of a classic in years to come. For the Mark IV, my biggest wish - by far - is for a back illuminated sensor, for better low light performance (not that it's all that bad as it is). 20MP would be fine - super high res isn't really a concern for me. The IBIS could easily be improved, I'm sure - it wasn't a noticeable step up from my 2011 Pentax SLR, and I was expecting a bit more from it. The EVF could be improved, and the menus badly need reorganising and de-cluttering. All in all, since the E-M10 (mark II or III) is already such a great little photographic tool, and the fundamentals of photography really don't change, I'd only be looking for small, incremental improvements. Whatever Olympus do, they shouldn't change it too much - they got so much right with this one.

Great videos as always. I like the compact size of this camera and with a top lens is an ideal set up for street photography. The multi-point autofocus is a bit hit and miss however, and there is no multi focus in continuous shooting. I am just wondering how much of a difference in autofocus and image quality you will see when compared to the EM5-II or an older pro body Em1-M1?

I think 20mp, hybrid detection and a little bit bigger buffer. Maybe the VIII sensor but I don't think is necessary. This would give plenty of room between the E-M5 III. No Pro-Capture, slower burst speed, smaller buffer, no flippy screen, Hi-Res shot, focus stacking & weather sealing. $699 full retail and $599 sale price a few months later. Once the E-M10 II goes down, they will adjust the Mark IV to what the Mark III currently is.

I already own an α6000. Instead of trading it in for α6100 or α6400, I purchased a Mk III which has IBIS at such an affordable price! (Also partly because Olympus sold the consumer camera division to JIP.) I wanted the silent shooting on the Mk II. But having 4K makes more sense in 2020. I'll live with the silent mode in AP. At least there is silent continuous shooting. Thanks for the review!

I'm loving my Mark III having bought it at the beginning of lockdown. For a 1980's beginner coming back to photography it's amazing. Build quality... I nearly had my heart broken yesterday, the camera on a tripod taking a sea scene. An effing cyclist going full pelt swerved hitting the tripod full on, with it and camera coming to rest 25 feet away (of course he didn't stop). Cosmetic scratches aside around the dials and pyramid the camera still works. Screen undamaged. Full test on all modes. Still working. 25mm Prime Lens and tripod head didn't make it. After my heart missed a few hundred beats, I'm still in business with a great little camera.

My wishlist for EM10 IV is an EM5 IV :). I own an EM10 III and I am very happy with it as it does the job very well for me. I plan to keep it for a few more years and only do a noticeable step forward when EM5 IV will be released. Until then I'll enjoy EM10 III and this great system that is m43 for its portability. It was a very good decision for me to go from a compact camera to this one, it made photography to become a hobby. I wouldn't go for larger crop factor like APS-C or FF.

I think the e-m10 mk-iv will be good with just three more things: new processor, new auto-focus system and selphie screen. Fully articulated, for me, is just for video makers, and this camera should continue being the best entry level for photographers...I had the E-PL9 but I missed too much the viewfinder and the 5 axis-stabilization. And, PLEASE, the Olympus Pen F mk-ii.

Right now, the best new entry level m4/3 camera available is the Panasonic G7. Olympus needs something that can compete, but with IBIS and autofocus that doesn't constantly hunt. In 2020, a camera should be able to do whatever a cell phone camera can do and do it better, and that includes vlogging and selfies, so a fully articulating screen is a must. So is a mic jack. It doesn't need weather sealing, hi-res mode, a fast frame rate and all the other bells and whistles from the E-M5 and E-M1 series cameras, just a fully articulating screen and mic jack and good video autofocus. So basically an E-M5 Mark II without the bells and whistles.
@keithholland4322
@keithholland4322 4 жыл бұрын
I actually traded in my G7 for a used E-M5 Mark II a few months ago, mostly because it's weather sealed, has IBIS, and the video AF works well. The only thing I miss about the G7 is the ergonomics. The grip on the G7 makes it feel much lighter than it is and it's much easier to use with larger lenses like the Panasonic 100-300mm. But overall, I like the E-M5 Mark II much better!

Olympus makes the E-PL cameras for entry level and vloggers. The 10 III is a step up from there for photographers. That is my reading of their range. Currently the E-M10 III is priced too high. Olympus have a special price on the older mark II currently, if I were to get a 10 series I would get that. For video you have to go for either the GX80 or step up to the E-M5 III. I hope a new 10 series does not come out soon because it will compete with the E-M5 III in Olympus' range. Instead, I think a better E-PL would be better for vloggers. Vloggers don't need the EVF. A better Pen would not conflict with the E-M5 III.

I have the EM 1 mk2 and EM 1 mk3 with 300mm F4 pro 1.4x tele and 12-100 F4 pro. I love the camera's BUT when I want a simple walk around combo I still grab my EM10 mk3 + 14-150 mk2 lens. For me this is a great little alk about light weight combo and when I don't want to carry all the other gear this will do just fine even in 2020 and beyond. Wish list for the mk 4 ( if there is one ) would just be better auto focus and a mic socket also a new sensor with better Dynamic Range would be nice but sticking to 16mp would be fine. Really though I love the size weight etc and 16mp is more than enough pixels for me. Remember the new EOS 1dx mk3 £6000 + camera only has 20 mp. I have used a few high mp cameras from Sony and Nikon and unless you intend to blow your images to poster size then 16 - 20 is more than enough for 99% of people's usage.

As for video and CAF, it's not that bad at all. IMO it's on par with the GH5 (also contrast AF). When set properly, you can easily use the touch screen to go back and forth between subjects smoothly- many of the Pany bodies don't do this at all. They seem to go in focus, back, in, then back in again. The PL9 and the EM10 III don't have that really abrupt in-out-in-out motion to the CAF- much more confident IMO. The image is just as good, but it lacks 10bit when compared to the GH5 (who cares?). The price point is also VERY different, especially on the used market. Knowing and accepting what I tell you, would you buy this camera in 2020? Maybe an update on the horizon? Given the product cycle, I'm guessing it would be coming before JIP takes over.

My Mk 1 just started getting this internal temp error and body is now unusable. Tried updating firmware but no bueno. :( But just ordered a Mk 3 and looking forward to using it in an upcoming trip. I was considering Mk 2 mainly due to remote flash left out on Mk 3 but other features and price of Mk 3 won me over. Current Mk 4 is $300 more and can't justify that. Update: I just found out that the firmware update 1.1 on Mk 3 has added the remote flash option! So to me, the Mk 3 is now complete.

Give it the 20MP PDAF sensor and TruePic VIII processor for better IQ and improved AF, but not an articulated screen. I don't see the need to make this a video-centric camera as Olympus should focus on the PL-series for vloggers. Generally, Olympus should give all the OM-series the 20MP sensor and the PL-series continue with a 16MP sensor to differentiate them (although upgrade to a PDAF system too). 16MP is more than sufficient for vlogging, unless you want to do 6K, which is another whole different ballgame.

So what will you recommend for film making entry level mirrorless? I’m really struggling
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 3 жыл бұрын
That depends on your needs straight away, entry level or not, do you need to have real time audio that burns into the video file? This is basically what separate the models you need to get. If audio is important and you don't want to record separately and rather to do everything in camera, then you need a camera that has a mic input jack, this is when EM10 III or IV doesn't have. You need to go with EM5 at least for that feature. Then it's your needs on whether you need 4K or you are happy with 1080. Most beginner would be happy with 1080 because it's easier on computer and editing on most computer, also easier on storage. Finally, do you need AF for certain application? If you are going to manual focus everything, like most filmmakers do, then it's fine. If you require AF for certain type of shots when you are filming, then you need a camera with great AF system, again, you need EM5 III or EM1 II and above to get that. Hope this explains things a little. Good luck.

I would never recommend someone buy an E-M10 Mark III unless they got a really good bargain on a used one because the only major difference between the Mark II and Mark III is 4K video and if you're going to be shooting video, you're going to want a mic jack and fully articulating screen, so I just don't see why anyone would pay extra for the Mark III.

I have the Mark II and my wife has the Mark III. There are difference you won't notice unless you had both for awhile. Mark III does have a slight thicker grip, nothing in comparing to a G7 of course. The AF track pad is also improved, native ISO is a 1/3 better, menus are more user friendly and less cluttered. With that said, I agree and also the user friendliness takes away a couple little details I wasn't a fan of. My sister-in-law got her E-M10 II for $350 with the 14-42mm R brand new from Adorama. (Olympus is in the family).

NO to the side articulating screen! Videographers do not need to take videos vertically, and photographers benefit more from a rear side screen than one that flips to rear. What Olympus SHOULD do, is license Fuji X-T2/X-T3 display hinge. It is best there is. You get tilting vertical and horizontal for photographers, and screen always stays behind the camera sensor for best position to find perspective and it is fastest to use and operate. BUT Olympus shouldn't forget those few floggers either..... Add a NFC to camera and Bluetooth LE for instant pairing smartphone to camera. So that one can instantly just turn camera On and then touch camera with phone and get remote control on phone screen. Then just press big RED circle to start camera recording while you see live view on phone screen. And you can make all adjustments on phone (as now) as well tap faces who to track. No one wants to hold camera on their faces for ugly perspective distortion, so you need to have camera 4-5 meters from you. And no one is going to stare a 3" display from that distance for anything! No, what you want is to have smartphone on your palm and there you see everything, you make exposure adjustments and focusing via that way and then start recording, put phone away and do your video. Pick phone and stop recording. This has been possible since E-M1 and vloggers doesn't use it, because they have been brainwashed that everyone must have either ugly noses or try to see that tiny side articulating screen from meters distance, and they have ruined not just photographers workflow, but as well their own by demanding idiotic Canon invented screen hinge as they do not know better! Even Olympus had long time ago better hinges in their Camedia series (IIRC C-6060) that flipped upwards and rotated around if needed.

@@TL-xw6fh Were those not always a polycarbonate, or whatever plastic used? Since the Olympus was first introduced as a retro-look in a new mirrorless camera as metal, people got accustom to that look and feel. Once you do this, going to plastic just seems wrong. Function wise it may be no difference. Hard to say. Are there not people stating they had a broken tripod mount? I rarely, if ever, use a tripod, but some people do. I own both Olympus cameras and Panasonic GX85, which feels very solid indeed. I still do love that metal on Olympus though. For a starter camera, I am thinking maybe that Panasonic G85 with 12-60 lens (China) combo for under $700 is well priced. @@lorenschwiderski Actually the Nikon D5300 is metal bodied, but it was changed to polycarbonate with the D5600. The same goes for the equivalent D7000 series, which is a prosumer camera (many pros use that as a backup to the D500). There is actually nothing wrong with polycarbonate bodies as there is still a metal carcass within it that carries all the hardware. The outer case is shock absorbent (I know as I dropped my Panasonic G3 on the road and it survived to tell the tale, still functioning 100% ). Years ago, I dropped my Leica M2 as it slipped off my shoulder and I had to have the deformed bottom plate and cracked the split screen rangefinder optic replaced. It cost me £450+ to replace in 1977!!! As for the broken tripod mount, as there does not appear to be any evidence supporting that allegation yet, I am keeping an open mind. Polycarbonate bodies were first introduced by Canon with the AE-1 in 1976 (?) and Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Sony, Fuji etc have used it extensively since. Interestingly, Olympus only just recently joined the bandwagon for the prosumer cameras, having learnt how to build tough cameras with the Olympus Tough series. These are all plastic bodied, and nobody complained about cracking bodies.

This is a camera I was really interested in buying, but did not because the stupid and completely unnecessary restriction of the electronic shutter. In the previous version it was allowed to be used it in all modes. In mark III only in some kind of automated mode. Why making a new model camera, STRIPPING DOWN functions from the previous one? One of the main advantage of mirrorless is the option to shoot in silence. Well, not with this one, unless you are happy with "dumb-mode". It still makes me mad, when I think about it.

Hmmmm no, your wish list would be a deal breaker for me; I wont buy any camera with a fully articulated screen and all the other things are stuff I just turn off. I like basic good quality cameras with as few features as possible. It needs to do the things I do want extremely well and produce fantastic photos. I would prefer a completely new entry model and add tilting viewfinder, the now general 20MP sensor, Olympus needs to design a decent shutter this one is rubbish (no, software fixes are not a solution to shutter shock). I am finding more and more that I always buy the older model of cameras as, increasingly, I hate the new models. Nothing wrong with the basic M10, a great camera, in my view the more they mess with it the further they move from the design aesthetic that created it and the more bloated and worse it gets (points at Sony, I really hated the A7MkIII with venom). I really dont approve of this modern fad of gradually evolving a model (they all do it now, not just Olympus) instead of making a new model explicitly designed for the present market. Olympus used to do this so well but now, they have just got lazy. This camera was absolutely perfect for when it was designed, now its just par for the course. Olympus desperately needs to rethink this segment of the market or they will progressively lose market share. Panasonic designs new cameras for particular markets and brings out more flagship models in a year than Olympus does in an era, not just a range of different priced models. I think this MkIII is the end point of its evolution not a platform for upgrade. We need a new entry level Olympus camera not another OM1 MkXXX, its so 2010s. People respect Olympus because their innovative design aesthetic is often stunning but, they have taken to milking their past; this doesn't produce a great future it just becomes old fashioned and this is 2020 supposedly the era of silver hats and flying cars not a re-visit to the 1970s. Have fun - winks ;-)
