OM SYSTEM OM-5 and E-M5 Mark III - 5 most EXCITING differences.

I have an em5 mark iii and my son has an OM 5. Since I have developed a tremor, the big difference for me is 2 stops better in-body image stabilization with his camera. If I can shoot with ISO of 500 or less I get very nice images without noise with my em 5 mark iii, while my son's OM-5 gets sharp and noise-free images with ISO of at least 3200. I suspect that the sensor in his camera is a little better, but it may be as you suggest, that he has a better processor with the TruPix IX. These are differences that I notice in the way that I use the camera, which is mainly for still shots without getting into special features like starry nights. My camera is still great, but it is more limited, so that if I were buying new, I would pay the extra for the OM-5. OM Systems did make significant improvements.

Two things in the OM-5 are missing and have to be changed in the next generation: 1.) USB-C Port 2.) Possibility to use the camera while charging (important for long videos). I hope they will complement this things in the next generation. Then I would upgrade from my E-M10ii and buy it.

@@ForsgardPeter I have a lot of digital cameras for still photos (MFT, APS-C and FF) and therefore not really a need for a new camera but all off them have the 30 min. video limit. That would be the only reason for me to to upgrade at the moment. The OM-5 luckily don't has this restriction but it's useless. The battery is small and has only a life of 60 to 110 minutes. This camera can only charge the battery, when it's off. That sucks! A waited so long for this new camera model, but this key feature is missing and for me the dealbreaker.

Just wanted to stater that whilst I was quite scathing about the OM-5 when it launched, I do love my EM5 Mk3 and no doubt the OM-5 is a similarly great little camera. Just wished it was a little closer to the amazing OM-1.

I debated for a long while which to purchase, since my only other Olympus / OM Systems camera was a PEN E-PL series camera. I chose the OM-5. It's great. Enjoy using it every day.

Thanks for this comparison. I am upgrading to the OM-5 from the E-M5 Mark III for landscape photography on long day hikes and backpacking trips where weight is critical. For me, the most exciting and useful features are live ND, handheld high res, and starry sky AF. As you mentioned, I also really appreciate the addition of my menu.

I’d be interested to know what lens you would recommend for landscape photography? I’ve just obtained the 7-14mm f2.8 but finding I’m struggling with composition - my own fault though. Heading into the hills next week which should hopefully help.

@@jamesbowmanphotography The 7-14 f2.8 is an excellent landscape lens, especially for grand landscapes with interesting foregrounds, but it does take time to master composition with a wide angle lens. Personally, I use the Olympus f4 Trinity of lenses (8-25, 12-45, and 40-150) because they are light and compact. My go to for 80% of my photos is the f4 12-45, which is also the lens I keep on my camera most of the time.

Handheld hi-res, ND filters, starry sky, slightly better IBIS make it a brilliant lightweight and small sized camera. Ideal for travel. The improved weather sealing and video features are useful too. My only problem is that I have a 1 Mk3 (and a OM1) but I am considering part exchanging my 5 mk3 for the OM5 since the change are just enough to justify it. The OM5 might also get more support in the future than the the 5 Mk3 will.

Hello Peter, I just bought the old model for a reasonable price and couldn't be happier about it, I only hope that the tripod mount won't fail on me, as I only use it to mount a case on my camera. I find the features of the OM 5 not to be worth one third of the price more than the old model. I would definitely use many of the new features, but at the end of the day, one doesnt loose much with the older model. The internal Hardware of the camera seems to be (almost) the same and it has many more software enabled features. I waited for this camera for so long, and wasn't dissapointed, but also not amazed by it, so got the M5 Mk. III instead. If it had a New BSI sensor it would be a different story, even at that price difference. I wish you a nice Holiday Time and take care! 😃

Excellent video! I have both models and I agree that the image is slightly warmer but I have also noticed that the OM5 has a slight green tone using the natural profile. Has anyone else noticed this?

Thanks Peter, enjoyed the comparison along with the revolving umbrellas and the speaking glitches! I think either camera is great and really intended for a certain niche; the new OM5 has started to grow on me. I don’t know if the difference is enough to warrant an upgrade for those that own the 3, but the new version has some nice improvements; even if only a minor evolution. I particularly like the ND addition (too bad it doesn’t also work for video)removing the 30 minute video limit (albeit this has never been an issue for me) and no longer using smaller video files. I think the 3 now on sale is also appealing!

thanks for highlighting the differences. I welcome OMS putting their stamp on the cameras and doing incremental upgrades. I notice they've brought out some OMS pinch lens caps which is also welcome. I bought a couple of third party pinch caps which have very poor finger grip when you pinch, hopefully OMS have done a better job.

That is a tough call. If you already have the features and not need them in your second body then E-M5 Mark III is a good choice. I personally would pick OM-5 because of the features. Also the price might something to think about.

Regarding the comparison photos at 5:35, were they taken with different unit of lens? Somehow the OM-5 photo appears softer to my eyes. Personally I find feature #1, 2, 3, 5 useful for my needs

I like the HHHR and the MyMenu features the most. With the HHHR added, I now consider this just about a perfect travel camera. I have an E-M1.3, which already has HHHR, but I seldom used the HHHR on it because I don't use the camera for places where it would be useful. So I always wished the E-M5.3 had it. Now I have it on the OM-5 and am very pleased with it.

However one obvious factor is whether you feel that the price differential is such that it is worth thinking seriously about the OM5.Some of the factors that you mention are very attractive e.g the live ND feature , hand held high res shots, but I'm less sure of the other factors particularly when you indicate there is little difference in image quality . So I would be interested in your views on this issue.

Thanks Peter; one feature that the OM-5 has that the EM-5 Mark III doesn't is the ability to save camera settings in OM Workspace. For reasons known only to Olympus, this feature was deleted for the EM-5 Mark III but at least OMD added back in for the OM5.

Now I want more wide angle and I can not decide between OM 9-18 f4-5.6 or 8-25 f4. I watched your videos and that doesn't make things easier, both have their pros and cons. Unfortunately I have no way to loan me the lenses.

Great videos. I follow you. I've got the em5 mark 3 and it's great. I do have 2 questions I can't figure out. 1. Stabilisation. The IS auto vs the IS 1 which one do you use and why would you switch between both? I've realised it was on auto all the time. Changed to IS-1. 2. When on C-AF-MF I struggle when I want to make the photo with MF. Each time when I pressed it; auto focus with C-AF kicks in before I press further. To make the MF photo I really have to press without any delay. Its hard. Is there an option to make this better? Delaying the time between half press and full is not really an option because I like the speed in all other settings with AF. Curious about maybe another way. Thanks!!

Auto IS is fine. You can use it all the time. It will recognize the movement of the camera. The C-AF should be okay if the shutter button is pressed halfway when using the MF. If you lift your finger from the shutter button, it will use the C-AF and not MF. Hope this helps.

The main problem is that in those portrait photos, especially when half of the face is illuminated by sunlight and the other half is in shadow, the skin tone of the illuminated part will be looked like a wax figure instead of real man. I plan to urgrade my em10ii to em5iii or other model, so I concern about it.

It sounds like the bright part is over exposed. Have you tried to lower the exposure?

Over time I start to find the OM-5 attractive. Yes, it is less than I expected due to the old EVF, old sensor, menu and micro-USB, but it still offers a lot of interesting things for such a compact camera. A travel and adventure companion when photography is not your first concern. At the same time, here in Germany, OM is selling em1iii and em1x for the same price!!! €1299! Sounds like a questionable strategy to me!

My Menu and Custom adjustment application to dedicated buttons are simple software matters, nothing else. It should not be a difference!!! Pitiable. EM 5 mk3 owners should get thes functions in sw update!! It is Olympus mistake. Unfortunatly OM System will not solve this issue, do not want to reduce the thin differences between EM5 vs OM5 :(

Thanks for your video Peter. So... Does the camera need a more powerful processor to handle menus? Really? We always hear the same excuses. I have compact cameras with more than 10 years that handle menus and customizations fluidly. What are the problems with the TruePic VIII processor? Not powerful enough? Honestly Peter, E-M5 Mark III users expected some firmware updates in all these years. You can not leave stranded customers who have spent more than € 1,500 on the camera and not receive interesting firmware updates like my menu, red frame, custom modes to button... I'm sure the TruePic VIII processor gives for that and much more.

I have heard that it could be the processor. I know it sounds odd. That has happened before with other camera brands as well. I remember there was one A6XXX Sony that was released with older menus and then I heard the same thing about the processor. As I said it sounds odd, but there might actually be some truth behind this. I do not think that it is the power, it could more about the architecture? LiveND with real time preview needs a lot power. Olympus used to make some nice firmware updates to older cameras in the past. I agree that it would be great to have an upgrade to E-M5 Mark III. The updates thy did before were not so processor intensive. Today the new features are mostly AI or other computational imaging that require more powerful processors. That might be the reason that there has not been so many new features in firmware updates.
