Class summary #1 Understand your board - advanced surfers don't move much allowing them to use very responsive boards (performance shorty) #2 Less is more - don't do unnecessary movements, let the wave dictate how to move #3 Surf in the pocket - don't race to the shoulder, you'll have more power in the pocket #4 Slow bottom turn - 1 2 3 and top turn (gives you time to set up) #5 Look where you want to go - especially in the cutback, it will allow you to see how much time you have to complete the turn #6 Twist to turn - ankles, knees, hips, shoulders (and head) #7 Surf front on - you lose peripheral vision when you surf sideways and makes your surfing look awkward #8 Take off at the peak - position yourself at the peak so you can glide in and set up instead of using a lot of energy paddling on the shoulder #9 Speed generation - compress and extend instead of wiggling #10 Foot Placement - stack your weight on your front foot to allow your back foot to move and adjust for speed or turning on your heel or toes #11 Copy and Paste - simulate your favorite surfers style and have fun with it #12 Stop standing on your board - start turning; by using your rails instead of the flat part of your board you generate speed #13 Focus - be in the moment and feel the wave, slow it down and focus on one thing at a time getting 1% better #14 Be your own coach - look at your own footage and analyze how your board is movement, how you are moving, and where your head's at #15 Have Fun - and share it! Experience with boards, fin set-ups, body surf, etc Thanks Ombe, on my journey to becoming a better surfer and your videos are very helpful :)

Last tip about having fun is so important. I remember my friend aiden saying that the best skater in he Park is the one with biggest smile. Its got to work hard at technique but you got have moments where you just play. Having said that I definitely need to get on the waves quicker.

It is interesting to see the divide between coaches/surfers in advice about whether to start a turn from the top down (head, shoulders, hips, knees) or bottom up (knees, hips, shoulders, head). Similar goes for snowboarding. But in following the "look where you want to go" advice, it seems like you generally start with your head/eyes first, so this is a bit counter to the advice of starting the turn with your knees. I guess it all comes down to the timing of the moving parts and if you do either one sequentially and smoothly then you will produce a nice turn

Some good points were covered here but the compartmentalising of specific positions wasn’t covered enough. A decent take off with correct positioning while laying on any surf board will dictate where the position of your feet wind up after a pop up. From the prone position to the take off stance you didn’t cover that your back foot will most of the time line up across your board usually over the top of your front 2 fins. For drive and carving control to generate speed this is an important stance to manoeuvre through quick sections out of the pocket of a wave. Washing off enough speed to pull a manoeuvre such as a carve your back foot needs to be positioned further back on your surfboard either in between the front 2 fins and the rear fins usually for controlled carves or cutbacks. For snaps generally staying light and loose with your back foot almost directly over the top of the rear fin will decrease enough weight over the front 2 drive fins for a lot more manoeuvrability in 6.39 of the video you can see the surfers back foot in the carving position over the deckgrip. Positioning of the front foot in this situation from the surfer is correct with a 45 degree angle across the stringer, the front foot position on the 45 angle will open the leading hip which will create enough free space for the rest of the torso to pivot correctly engaging into a carving manoeuvre. If the surfers leading foot was on 90 degree angle across the stringer there’s less engagement in the rest of the torso to be able to change direction fast enough to complete a carve.... I could go on but for the most part it was a bad clip and it was put together well..
