I've been doing that maybe thing with my son who is 5, and didn't even realize it. Point being it's funny how I probably never would have tried that my self, but just trying to show my kid that the wave isn't what he thinks it is, and that he has the ability to rip on it if he lets himself. Note a 3ft wave is basically head high for him so the stress and anxiety makes sense.

This brought me to tears 😅 I am the queen of backing out of waves with fear but then beating myself up after for not trying! Thank you for sharing this reminder to embrace the play and the maybe!

Great stuff Clayton. I keep this in mind, every time I go out when it's bigger. Even if it's closing, I'll check for corners. Maybe I don't go on those, but it's not an outright no, I'm lookin for a chance.

Awesome. Me too, I really feel that sometimes is just good to be out of the confort area to improve and enjoy more.

I totally feel you on this, whenever I go out ona big day, especially in the overhead range at Blacks or any reefs in SoCal I try to "fail first wave". Safely of course, but i think falling early in a session actually relaxes your stress and take over that fight or flight by forcing the worst! I sometimes like sitting wide, and maybe catch a wide set to warm up! Great tips with saying maybe!

Clayton, I really appreciate this message, so timely. I just surfed 10-12 ft faces and was struggling mentally the whole time. Mostly fear won out and I was mostly bummed on the session. I’m stoked to flip the script to Maybe next time 😅
