A doctor rises to become chief surgeon. But her past comes back to haunt her.
THE SECRET MARKET is used with permission from Martina McGlynn and Garret Daly. Learn more at mixedbagmedia.com.
Amy is a successful surgeon who receives a message one evening at her office, telling her to call a number for a mysterious auction: a secret that concerns her is up for the highest bidder. If she doesn't buy her secret, it will be released to the general public.
She enlists the help of a lawyer, but the lawyer can offer no help. But in her quest to learn more, Amy finds herself pulled in an increasingly dark, sinister underworld of the "secret market" -- one that threatens the life she's worked so hard to build for herself.
Directed by Martina McGlynn and Garret Daly from a script written by Conor Ryan, this smart, compelling thriller builds up a fascinating world lurking underneath the prosperous, ordinary surfaces of the world. As Amy grapples with the implications of her secret and what it would cost if it was revealed to the world, she comes up against how her own identity and life have been shaped by hiding this secret.
Thrillers like this are built on a foundation of tautly excellent writing that must balance world-building, quick pacing and enough character development to make the stakes real and urgent. Through elegantly concise camerawork and polished cinematography, we see how Amy's life is a well-appointed one. With a successful career, a lovely home and a husband and child, Amy is played by actor Victoria Smurfit as a smart, confident polish of a prosperous professional. But the auction's threat to reveal her secret imperils all of it.
As Amy pieces together the information, we're treated to a Wonderland-like descent into a strange, compelling world, full of mysterious, ominous characters (including a shady "broker" played with stylish elan by actor Tadhg Murphy) and a provocative concept at its core. The auction seems like a ritualistic take on blackmail, but as Amy tries to figure out the inner workings, she and the audience must meditate on the central questions posed by the story: how much are we defined by our secrets and how much power should we give them? As Amy grapples with these questions, she finds the key to taking back her power in the situation, which carries her through the sly, propulsive conclusion.
Fans of the recent phenomenon SQUID GAME may find a lot to enjoy in THE SECRET MARKET. Both are high-concept takes on the thriller genre, and both hint at the hidden machinations of a larger organization hidden under the respectability of ordinary life. Though it ends on a highly satisfying note, Amy's journey is ripe for expansion as a show or feature, if only to explore the concept of the secret market and who's behind it -- and the larger questions of success, deceit, illusion and how these are all intertwined.

She realized that the person who bought the secret was the surgeon assisting her in the beginning. The second pair of hands that we see in the first shot and do not see in the second shot of the sink -- that's who bought her secret. Someone who knew her, worked with her, and likely was involved in the same secret. Infidelity? Maybe. But chances are, they committed malpractice together, or something even worse. As soon as the man who came with the offer told her that "we are in this together," she realized that she is not the only person who stands to lose something if this secret is revealed -- that the person who purchased her secret also stands to lose everything, and blackmail can go two ways. Revealing it herself would cost the purchaser more than the investment, it would cost them their livelihood. That's why she's willing to take the risk.

I like this theory. But why would she then offer 120k euro? Why not just buy it for 1 euro?
@Nabooru
@Nabooru 2 жыл бұрын
@@Dayvit78 I wondered that, too. It may either be out of guilt or empathy for the person she knew, or it may be that she is just not 100% certain, but that this is the amount she is willing to wager in that bet. If she's wrong, the person stands to lose nothing and will break even. Too low an offer would deter a less involved party. If she's right, then she spends no more than she would have expected had her broker been able to go back in and win that auction.

I actually think it's the broker that bought the secret via his own secret bidder - she suddenly changed attitude when she heard the investment guy say "we're in this together" & it made her twig that this is a setup. The broker was never going to win the auction & would use the excuse that her being there drove up the price (which is reasonable) beyond her limit. But he not only gets the fee from her but also splits the investment fee to keep it in storage. She knows she can buy the secret from him and it will be safe because he said it's against the rules for him to release it. Makes me wonder if the guy she got his name from is also involved...

She washed before surgery with another surgeon, but washed alone after the surgery. Later, she is being told of potential surgeon to hire. So something happened in the operating room that made the other leave. Something that killed the child/patient. It’s a short, so almost everything we see is relevant somehow.

WOW !! The richness of all the settings was AMAZING, which was extremely effective in bringing out the high stakes of "the secret". Keeping the MacGuffin secret really made the intensity of the story even more graphic. The use of darkness and light amongst all the prestigious background was truly effective. It was also subtle that the MacGuffin appears to be a joint malpractice with the death of a baby, likely a girl as we see the bereaved parents contrasted with her happy family with a daughter. And the antagonist, who won the bid, appears to be the fellow surgeon scrubbing up at the beginning with our protagonist. They are no longer part of the story at the end with the single surgeon scrubbing up and the champagne celebration at the end. The "I came from nothing, and can lose it, no problem" was the coolest line for a climactic resolution. HUGE appreciation to the person picking out the sets, the direction, the acting, the editing and especially the writer(s?) who conceived this brilliant story. Well done team !!

The surgery was a success, the child did not die on the operating table. You need to go back to recovery room scene w/ the parents. If you listen closely you'll even hear the doctor say, "she'll be fine", and she smiles. She gave the parents good news, their faces went from somber to quiet smiles and embrace with relief. The doctor in shadow and the soft muffled audio was intentional - the magician's slight of hand to make you look where he wants you to. So no, that was NOT the secret she paid to hide. Rather it is us who's paying the the bid...to learn her secret. But yes, it definitely made me ask myself...what secret do I have that would make me pay such a price or worse? Excellent film.

I was expecting the revelation to be that it was a scam. Convince the person that they have a "secret" worth protecting. Use the auction to gauge the value of that secret to that person, then sell it back to them without ever knowing what the secret itself was. The realization that the rival bidder also had an incentive to conceal the secret was just as good, though.

Enjoyed this premise and execution! But even if we accept the premise of this film, what's to keep someone from just targeting a smattering of rich/famous people at random or based on rumors/a hunch? Is the auction house verifying that the secrets are actually true? I would have assumed this is a con, like a more sophisticated version of the common scam where they claim they've compromised your webcam and have footage of you in a compromising position. I'd assume that in this one, they're actually phishing, banking on the fact that many have a secret they'd pay to keep. By paying or otherwise engaging you'd mark yourself as someone who has a secret worth paying for, and then you'd be targeted with a further social or technical exploit e.g. if you paid for the secret, they'd include malware in the file containing the "secret" that would allow them to actually gain access to your secrets.

I don't see anything faulty with it. They needed another meeting before the auction, he and probably doc herself didn't get another time and venue to do so, so there you go. Also also it's cinema, it should be illogical and overly emotional at times,when it's proportionate to inner logic of the plot and inner truth of the character. I think they really needed that episode to underline the pressure lovely doc was under. We needed to see her lose it to get sided with her more.

Surely if someone knew where the auction was, for a lot less than the cost of the secret they could have the broker, auctioneer, investment banker or others kidnapped, and tortured into revealing the entire structure. @PancakeDiaries
@PancakeDiaries 5 ай бұрын
That's not a flaw... The secrets aren't known to anyone at all, but the person who put it up for auction. The file is encrypted... The people who's secrets are at stake aren't in the room at all. They sent brokers, as the blonde did. An unknown secret could be ANYTHING, and her reaction becomes a measuring stick for how valuable it may be, so she's advised not to be in the room. She doesn't listen to any advice in the movie and it's literally repeated "I'm not telling u what to do... I am advising you." The 2nd set of hands belonged to her coworker who probably advised her against a procedure in surgery, but Blondie didn't listen. The coworker went around her obligation to tell on Blondie, and thus became complicit as well. They share the secret of what happened... "We're in this together" was also probably stated between to them, and Blondie's memory is jogged when she hears the phrase. Why would someone buy an unknown secret for more than the ridiculous 100k Blondie offered? Because the broker isn't Blondie, and u couldn't chance it being some random willing to do that... She auctioned and bought the secret, thus making no profit. Had she lost in the game of chicken, both careers would've been destroyed for 120k, and that's why she offered to buy the secret back for the same 120k. She knew who the buyer/seller ea at this point. Plus , who else would have a vested interest in it remaining a secret? Who else would have a badge to get into the doctor's space for the delivery? Who else but the person putting it up for auction would know the LOT number of that particular secret? The person with the secret because the lot was on the invitation, and the seller of the secret. There's a lot of context clues in this, and they did a great job.

My grandmother used to tell my mother when she was little and someone upset her to tell the person her mother would TELL. Her theory was that everyone has something to hide--the trick is making them think you know what it is. I wondered at one point if the entire auction was a setup: There is no secret. They simply contact high-profile people and convince them that there is. You could make quite a bundle in one go and then disappear. Like a darker version of The Sting.

My take: She did not realize "who" she realize "What" only mattered to her and if she gave it no value it was worthless. Noone except her knew what was or COULD be in the file...Only she can decide if it worth the price. She made a gamble that the "buyer" would rather have their money back at least than nothing because they obviously do not care about the other person as they "bought" the secret..."in this together" meant to her "oh right you lose too if I just tell on myself lol". Funny enough... 120k is 20% more than 100k, just like the broker said "that number plus 20%" I think that is the reason the broker was talking at the end, maybe talking to an accomplice to up bid. Maybe was even talking to the guy that was in her office hehe. Clever af short tho, would watch more!

So the million dollar question is what was the secret. Let's do some process of elimination: what secret would ruin her life? 1) Infidelity or an out of wedlock child might destroy her marriage but not her career. And that's not even a given because in a strong marriage, therapy can help. I'm ruling that out. 2) Malpractice during surgery that resulted in death. The problem with this, is that while there may be another surgeon involved; surgeries always have nurses, technicians etc who also might know this secret. Also she valued her secret at 120,000 euros. A year or two's worth of salary? 3) committed a murder, for which she was never caught. 4) Cheating in medical school or on certification exams: If she cheated with a fellow student, this could have long term consequences. #4 Could render her M.D. invalid, which means she was practicing medicine illegally. This can have all kinds of dire ramifications. Lawsuits from both hospitals and patients Both 3 & 4 could possibly mean jail time. That would destroy her career, severely affect her relationships with her husband and child, family, friends and community. Just my theories 🧐

Either way it's clearly really bad for her to react that way.... and must to be something illegal , people can only blackmail you .. when you have something to hide . I wanted to find out what she did , but i guess that's left for our imagination so anything from organ trafficking to murder or fraud . I doubt it's infidelity .. it feels like it's something more than that it feels like it's something that would destroy her career in medicine & get her arrested .

I'm the opposite of the person who said they like most of these but not this one; I almost always pick these shorts apart, but this is one of the few fully adequate ones. It gives just enough without spelling it out; it's not lazy, it's subtle. And while it does hint what the secret is, so many people are missing that the secret *doesn't ultimately matter.* It's not the point. That's part of what's so great, we don't have to know the secret to know how high the stakes are. It's really a smart film. Fantastic buildup, and the actors are amazing btw. I even sat my partner down to watch it and they're even pickier than me, and they love it too. So here's a stamp of approval from two hard-to-please film snobs, haha.

I enjoyed the video. But the whole shebang is bogus. The primary plot hole is the auction. If you put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig. The auction is blackmail with lipstick, but it’s still blackmail. Why would a blackmailer go to all the trouble, and also have to pay the auction fees? He’d simply show the victim that he had the “goods” on them and blackmail away. The second plot hole is the digital format used for the secret. Only a fool would pay for a secret that’s digital. It’d be absolutely impossible to know that there were no other copies. Other than the plot being ridiculous I enjoyed everything else. Truly.

All of this makes sense only if there is some sort of organization that enforces the rules. In other words, if someone gives away the secret or sell it a second time, they are assassinated. Who would be willing to enforce these rules and could they do it without mistakes? The premise is absurd.
