yeah when you rewatch ep 3, you realize that hiiragi just told Togame that shishitoren was chasing "one of ours" so Togame probably thought his gang was just fighting with another bofurin member, not a random middle school kid

Togame is a literal sunshine protector, even if the sun isn't shining right now. He's one of my favorite characters in this series because of what he's doing for Choji

What I think is potentially sadder about this episode is Togame to me maybe has to watch not only his own degradation but his teams. In the flashback they seemed all chummy and cared for each other, but now they bully and kick beaten team members, and had to learn two of what looked like his friends bullied a middle schooler. Like idk how they were in the past but to me it looks like the team as a whole is morally degrading and Togame has to witness it/be the cause of it, just praying for the day Choji comes back to normal.

yeah and i think the breaking point was when he learned from Sakura that his gang has now become one that gangs up on a middle schooler and when his leader didn't care about it much. so it made him question what he's been fighting for, hence the flashback and the lack of intent after he came back to fight Sakura again...

Fun fact: A lot of Togame's backstory is anime original just to help flow it better. From the beginning where he meets Choji to the scenes before Choji talks about being free for the first time are all anime-exclusive.

@@UnifiedEntity There is a flashback in the manga as well that took up almost a chapter, so I don't think you can do much about the fight being interrupted. That's going to be the norm in this series, that most fights have some kind of flashback in between. This manga followed a lot of traditional shonen tropes. What makes it outstanding is in its execution.

poor togame finally found friends and a place to belong, a sun to follow then it all crashed down but he was willing to be covered in mud and do all the hard stuff with hope that the sun will shine again and continue to protect his place of belonging but with this fight and what sakura said, he realized that the gang he was trying to protect is no longer the gang he had in the beginning. Choji is also far gone. so what has he been doing all this time? and so he's losing will to fight due to this questioning, like what is he fighting so hard for, if the gang motto he's trying to follow has changed so badly to something he disliked.

Togame just lost the reason to fight towards the moment he learn the truth about the fight, that's what Sakura noticed and get mad. And their is not mask or brainwashed, sigh, he just took upon himself the responsibility of being the bad guy bc he's loyal to Choji and he just do it. @Lalafluffbunny That's the core of this Manga/Anime teenagers with strong emotional instability, and anime/manga sense of drama for scene, learning through fights and "friendship" how to deal with their emotions or find stability after lashing out. That's what the manga/anime is telling. Unfortunatly it won't go through lots of people or won't know how to explain it properly

Not understanding why he stopped mid-fight to beat up Kanuma and Arima or why he would go along with Choji's actions. Feels like some people just see the hype fights and ignore whatever narrative is set up through those fights.

hopefully it's 2 cour like the rumors are saying... i wish it was a 22-24 episode season instead of 2 cour because the stuff and developments work best together, but anyway manga arc spoilers from the current pacing, current season would end after grade captain, then next cour would be focused on keel and end on chapter 60-61 with the tightrope to callback on the anime starting scene.
