Of the three main "Peyton Place" creations (those being the book, the original movie, and the TV series) I believe this movie is the best. The book was lurid and sensational, and that's what sold it. The TV series was a soap opera. But this movie has real artistic and cultural value. I think of it as a thing unto itself, standing apart from the book. The cast, performances, music, setting, and story are all so memorable. Connie and Mike (Lana and Lee) were a gorgeous couple.

Agree with the rest of you: This is a lovely video. Franz Waxman's score for 1957's PEYTON PLACE is in a league with Johnny Green's score for RAINTREE COUNTY (1957), Dmitri Tiomkin's for GIANT (1956), and Alfred Newman's for ANASTASIA (1956). Those of you who have yet to see PEYTON PLACE, watch for the beautiful and unforgettable conclusion, with children on bicycles, Alison's final words, and a reprise of the steeple bell fanfare that opens the movie.

To answer your question, Christine (and not in a RUDE way, like some other moronic assholes have done), yes, the town really exists. It's in Maine, Camden Maine to be specific, where all of the exterior shots were filmed for the movie. Russ Tamblyn said in the DVD of P. P. that when he and Terry Moore went back for a reunion to celebrate the 50 years of the filming of P. P., he said it was such a thrill to see not one thing had changed in all that time. He said it was like stepping back in time, and that he and Terry Moore both cried because it had such a special meaning to them and a very special place in their hearts.

This is where I grew up. "Peyton Place High School" was the former Crosby High School, Belfast, Me., and was a junior high when I went there. Only locals would know the gaffe in the bus stop scene in downtown "Peyton Place" (Camden, Me.), when Alison leaves town. She boards the bus and it roars away--headed north on Main Street, toward Bangor. The true direction to New York would be just the opposite. Meanwhile, this vid faithfully captures most of the film's key locations.

Those last three films are all time classics, but reduced to an afterthought.
