My interpretation of Vigilant is that the story was always about Molag Bal and forgiveness. At the dawn of creation, Bal (not Molag Bal; not yet) was a Daedric Lord who, like the others, declined Shezarr's offer to create Mundus (he was also the one who spearheaded the effort to turn Jyggalag insane and into Sheogorath, which will be important later). Bal however, was more disgusted by mortals than the others; _the aedra gave up their power for this?_ So he took the form of an ayleid bard and started pulling the strings of mortal lives, getting them to submit to him. It was never really malevolent, though. He was more like Clavicus Vile in that he made promises to the people he dealt with only to trick them. One such instance is the memory we can play where a man named Jonah loses his sister, so he made a deal with the bard that if Jonah would kill in the name of Bal's "lord," he would see his sister again, only for them both to end up dead and in Coldharbor. And Bal used deals like that throughout history, gaining more power, until he met Lamae. At first, he tried the same tricks on her, but she was just too kindhearted and to be corrupted or seduced by promises of power. Bal was intrigued by her and wanted to figure out how a mortal could be so pure. He started visiting her just for the joy of being around her, telling her stories of his older dealings as if they were the tales of a bard, yet each time, Lamae insisted that there was a happy ending to each story. Bal fell in love with Lamae, and she clearly liked him too. She didn't know who he really was, but she was starting to suspect he was more than just a bard. Bal started seeing the beauty in Mundus and even gained an appreciation for the arts. After all, if a mortal world could create someone like Lamae, maybe it wasn't so bad. But eventually, Bal realized Lamae, being mortal, would die. So Bal came up with a way he could save her from Arkay's cruel cycle of life and death. He had second thoughts, of course, but what choice did he have? (It's also implied that Bal was pushed to this particular plan by Sheogorath as an act of revenge) He met with Lamae one last time, under the Eldergleam, and told her one more story before saying goodbye to her. That night, Bal turned Lamae into the first vampire, and we all know what that's a euphemism for, so I won't go into details. When Lamae rose from the dead and slaughtered the nomads who found her body, the only survivor was a shepherd named Laza, who swore vengeance against Bal. But what's more, Lamae realized what Bal had done to her and hated him for it. The only thing that made Mundus worth it was forever destroyed. Crushed, Bal created the Stone-Fire within himself and tore it out in an attempt to kill himself, reminiscent of how Trinimac tore out Shezarr's heart, but it didn't work, instead burning his flesh and soul, and Bal became Molag Bal, consumed by rage and hatred. Now, his dealings with mortals were purely malevolent. He used the Stone-Fire to torment mortals, driving them to commit horrible crimes, like telling Marukh that he had to murder his wife and child, or getting the Alessian Order to burn the healer Mary as a witch, or driving Morihaus to commit genocide. He turned Coldharbor into the hellscape it is today, and made sure every soul was tortured forever. But after millennia of destruction and enslavement, Molag's rage turned to the Divines. He created a new plan where he would open a gateway to Aetherius within Coldharbour so he could kill the gods themselves. But just doing it himself would be too easy. No, he wanted to manipulate someone dedicated to the gods to do it for him, and there was a particular Vigilant of Stendarr that would be perfect -- the one that had already touched a piece of the Stone-Fire and had thwarted a summoning attempt. The Dragonborn was the one Bal wanted. Meanwhile, Lamae had grown restless in her tomb and had started building up an army of vampires beneath the city of Windhelm. When the Dragonborn was investigating, Molag used this opportunity to trick him/her into submitting to Coldharbor, but it didn't work. So Molag tried again, this time trapping the Dragonborn in a cursed house that was burning to the ground. Molag's offer was simple: die, or be saved. the Dragonborn accepted Molag's offer, only to end up in Coldharbor. Now in Oblivion, Jyggalag and the Grey March, as well as its new general, Laza of Order, turned to Coldharbor. Molag's power was severely depleted as Greymarch consumed his realm and in trying to keep Jyggalag and Laza at bay. The Dragonborn's resistance to Molag's corruption had dragged out the plan, so he was running out of time if he was going to kill the gods. Meanwhile, Laza had turned on Jyggalag, seizing his opportunity to break free of his control so he could kill Molag Bal, but he was beaten in combat by the Dragonborn, who finally reached Molag Bal, now a mere husk of his former self, his power nearly entirely drained and his soul confined to a mortal body. A body the Dragonborn destroyed. The Dragonborn opened Molag's portal to Aetherius, but (unless you have less than 50 karma in the game) he was too weak to enact his plan. But, the Dragonborn had been going into the memories of the fallen, lost, and tortured souls of Molag's victims, showing them submitting to Bal was wrong and what they could have done instead. The Dragonborn gave the souls the knowledge that helped them forgive themselves and find peace...and as Molag Bal was taking his final breaths, the Dragonborn realized there was one more soul that could be saved. So the Dragonborn went into the memories of Molag Bal and did the same for him -- showed him that had he let Lamae go, she would've found peace, and if she was at peace, he could be too. But before the Dragonborn left Bal's memories, Bal wanted to know one more thing: the name of the person who finally freed him from his suffering. The 17 Lords of Oblivion became 16 with the death of Bal, symbolized by the crumbled statue in Aetherius and so we see that even someone as evil and as cruel as Molag Bal can still find peace in the end.

Before becomming Molag bal he was the Bard (Bal as we see him at various point during quest). He touches the dead child or something underneath the Eldergleem and turns dark. Followed by these events. I think part of him wanted to do the right thing. Like we have a good side and bad side within us.

I agree. It helps that i did this mod with a role playing character: A Jaded Werewolf that hated everything and everyone. This and M'rissi: Tails of Troubles being the last two stories were the perfect ending in her journey towards being a better person and learning there's still good in the world that deserves to ve saved.

Slowly walking down from the Eldergleam after praying at Lamae's grave (using a mod to do so) and saying the Dragonborn's name to a confused and relieved Molag Bal and slowly walking away, leaving him behind me, was a very surreal and cinematic experience. Vigilant is an amazing mod.

Vigilant was a real masterpiece of storytelling. taking a game from 2011 and turning it in to a fresh, lore friendly experiance that was able to elicit genuine emotion, even towards the prince of domination and enslavement. I hope the souls of coldharbour were finally redeemed.

When I installed this mod, I coincidentally also installed Become a Bard mod. I was in for a surprise when being a bard is a major part of the story. So, at the ending, I left my lute beside Lamae's grave, hoping that she and the "bard" will finally be at peace.

I saw VIGILANT for the first time in a video about mods to turn Skyrim into Dark Souls. *SPOILERS AHEAD* I didn't think too much of it until I was FORCED to kill the alchemists, and the subsequent recap of my crimes when I went to stop Altano. I went and informed myself just a liiiiittle bit (yeah, minor spoilers slipped through), and I decided then and there that I would save this mod for later to savour the anticipation. Because from what I heard, what impressed me until now was literally just an appetizer... This song does a good deal to boost my excitement, by the way. Found it on a playlist of the VIGILANT OST. Yes, I was stunned to find out just how much original music was made for this °O°

For me the vigilant of stendarr mod was confusing and difficult without a walkthrough sometimes. But the story, the world in part 4 and the characters were amazing. It was the best skyrim mod which I have ever played and should played by everyone, who has skyrim for pc and/or is a dark souls fan. The story is creepy, sad an absolutely beautiful. Skyrim will never feel the same after that quests and bethesda could really learn something from vigilant.

The difference between this cover and the original song is quite significant, and that's in a good way. This is a much more uplifting tune, as opposed to the original's somber and more morose tone. Which is fitting seeing as when this plays.

After all that suffering and death; to complete all the quests, clear all the dungeons, kill all the bosses, you release all those souls from the eternal grasp of Molag Bal. You defeat the Daedric Prince and bid him farewell as this song carries you back to Tamriel. What a moving conclusion to a fantastic mod.

I am stretched on your grave And will lie there forever If your hands were in mine I'd be sure we'd not sever My apple tree my brightness It's time we were together For I smell of the earth And am worn by the weather When my family thinks That I'm safe in my bed From night until morning I am stretched at your head Calling out to the air With tears hot and wild My grief for the girl That I loved as a child (Do you remember The night we were lost? In the shade of the blackthorn And the chill of the frost Thanks be to Jesus We did what was right And your maiden head still Is your pillar of light) The priests and the friars Approach me in dread Because I still love you My love and you're dead I still would be your shelter Through rain and through storm And with you in your cold grave I cannot sleep warm So I'm stretched on your grave And will lie there forever If you hands were in mine I'd be sure we'd not sever My apple tree my brightness It's time we were together For I smell of the earth And am worn by the weather yes sir~~
